About

CHAKA KHAN IN CONCERT:

The Queen of Funk has no equal: Chaka Khan is, indeed, a living legend. Her live performances are energetic histories of her four-decade long career in music -- from her funk days through her jazz and R&B heydays. Her profound voice carries her fans "Through the Fire," and "Ain't Nobody" loves them better than Chaka. Although Chaka's appearances are less frequent than in her heyday, she delivered big at her 2013 shows, wowing fans and building excitement for her select dates in 2014. Make no mistake: she's got it. She's still got it.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Chicago-born Yvette Marie Stevens came up in rough South Side housing projects before she rose to fame under the name Chaka Khan. Her grandmother introduced her to jazz music at an early age and instilled a life-long love of the genre. As she grew up, she bounced around all-girl singing groups and small bands before joining the Black Panthers and changing her name. While performing in a local band in 1972, she was poached by a new group called Rufus, and with her at the lead, the group signed a major contract with ABC Records just a year later. After several years with Rufus, she proved to be just as talented on her own with the 1978 solo debut Chaka, featuring the ubiquitous hit “I’m Every Woman”. All said and done, she has won ten Grammys and sold over 200 million records worldwide.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"She is a gift of 'honey for the ears!' No one will ever match her talent! We are so fortunate that she shares her gift with the world, and that she has been blessed with an unchanging voice."

"As expected, Chaka torn it up and I couldn't get enough even though she sang for over an hour and a half. I loved every minute of it."

"Very relaxing show! She is a loving artist! Performance great!"

I loved this festival. The event was organized well. It began on time and the DJ to entertain the crowd between artists was fabulous. I had so much fun!

    Chaka Khan delivered!

by ncwillie on 6/21/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

We really enjoyed the superb performance of Chaka Khan and her group. Absolutely superb vocals after all the years since I listened to her current hits on the radio! The musicians that played for her were also of the highest caliber! The warm up band, Brick, really put on a great show as well. I was very impressed by the the great performances of the artists after all these years. My only complaint was that the ushers at DPAC, where we saw the performance, did not stop all the picture taking, and did not stop the rude audience members who insisted on standing and blocking the view of other customers who were complaining! The people next to us got up and left when they were unable to see the stage due to two rude women who acted like it was the church of Chaka Khan, and had no consideration to the other patrons.

Joe was did a sexy performance. Jodi was rockin' it out. Tony Toni Tone was great. Tevin Campbell was in the crowd after his performance walking around just meeting everyone and taking pics. He has such a down to earth personality! Chaka was amazing as usual. Can't wait to see who is there next year!

This was my first time attending the festival. I decided to treat my husband to the festival for father's day. The enviroment was very pleasant. It was not uncomfotably too many people. When you looked arounf everybody was dancing and having fun, but yet respectful of their neighbors. We had tickets for prefered seating, which was a awesome view. The performers were amazing, especially T. Cambel. He was very socialble toward the crowed, in that he allowed people to take photos of and with him. Joe was also appreciative of his fans, in that he made his self available for phots. Fans were very happy and respectful of the entainers schedule.

    Chaka Khan

by Crylo on 6/21/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Chaka still has an amazing voice but because the drum bass was so loud, it was very hard to hear her lyrics. The musicians were excellent but again, the drums seemed to drown out the vocalists and the other instruments.

We enjoyed the show. However, the stage lighting was way off! When performers were doing solos, they didn't have the spotlight on them. It took the lighting people until almost the end of the show to figure out when and where to shine the spotlight! We were sitting in section 9, which were great seats, but we had a white strobe light shining in our eyes for an entire segment of the Chaka Kahn concert! I just expected a more professional experience from such a nice venue...

    The Concert was great!!

by MsAnnMJones on 6/21/10Jacksonville Metro Park - Jacksonville

I loved the concert, but wish that Chaka Khan wouldve had more time to perform. I wouldve preferred a little less of some of the other acts (Tito Jackson). I wish Teven Campbel would've just did his songs instead of telling us how many of his songs we didn't know. EVERYONE knows who he is so.... But other than that it was great!

Chaka Khan was hot and tired!

by 58mama on 6/21/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Chaka Khan did not impress me herself. She seemed tired maybe from the heat and the performance that she spoke about the night before in hot Florida. The rest I think was in the sound system. I have been to three shows there within the last few months and the sound system in this show was the worst. I was happy to hear the familiar tones but they really did not move me like I had expected. I really don't think I would want to see her show again.

    Great Performances, Not on Time

by bellaries on 6/21/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Both Brick and Chaka Khan gave excellent performances, however the event ran about 45 minutes behind. That would be OK on a Saturday night, but on a Sunday with work on Monday, it made things kind of hard.
