About

When Cedric Burnside prepared to record Hill Country Love, the follow-up to his 2021 Grammy-winning album I Be Trying, he set up shop in a former legal office located in a row of structures in Ripley, Mississippi, the seat of Tippah County, a town known as the birthplace of the Hill Country Blues style. Producer Luther Dickinson brought recording equipment into the empty space and they recorded fourteen songs in two days.

"Every time I write an album, it's always different," says Burnside, whose previous two releases—2015's Descendants of Hill Country and 2018's Benton County Relic—were both nominated for Grammys. "This time, I'm a little more upfront and direct.
As songs like the title track and "Juke Joint" indicate, even with all his travels and accomplishments, Burnside has never strayed far from the distinctive style pioneered by his grandfather, blues legend R.L.

Burnside. But Burnside sees himself as an inheritor, not an imitator, incorporating rock, R&B, and hip-hop elements into his work. "Love You Music" reveals the parallels between the polyrhythmic, droning sound of the Hill Country style and West African music, and on "Closer," Burnside strives for spiritual redemption.

Cedric Burnside's goal for Hill Country Love was a real sense of honesty and integrity. "I have to be true to where I'm coming from," he continues. "Life gives you good and life gives you bad and you have to cope with it however you need to cope with it.

From opening note to last chord, was a pleasure to hear a living legend do his thing. All the history of his musical journey wrapped up into one night was truly memorable.

Easily one of the best shows and venues we’ve been to. A Grammy Award winning artist makes an unscheduled stop on his tour and entertains like no other. Cedric puts on an outstanding show with his voice and talent. I highly recommend the Kingdom Brothers out of St Louis as well. So much talent packed into an intimate venue. GO SEE CEDRIC!

Intimate experience, Loved being so close but did not enjoy the auditorium setting. Music, acoustics, audio & vocals were outstanding - everything I wanted!

  • Hill Country Blues in NH!

The now Grammy Award Winner Cedric Burnside “I Be Tryin”, put on a tremendous concert Thursday night. Cedric started by playing several songs acoustically from the album and was in great vocal form, I’m not sure he needed a microphone. He started with the title track “The World Can Be So Cold” a haunting song. He then plugged in his electric guitar and brought out withhis last minute replacement drummer. His drummer is ill with liver disease. They had one rehearsal! They made it work and continued that infectious hill country rhythm. Of course they played a song his Grampa Rl Burnside was well known for “Po Black Mattie” the groove is special. The only downside was that Cedric is a SIX time Blues Drummer of the year award winner and he did not play drums this night, a first for me. Did not take away from the concert, just different.

  • So good!!

I saw him open for Greta Van Fleet in Franklin at the First Bank Amphitheater and he was so great! He’s very chill in a rock way and he was equally as good as Greta! I highly recommend seeing him! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As a blues lover, this was interesting to say the least. Most attendees where "regulars" and we felt a bit out of place as we adjusted - but it was fun overall. Ced and Lightning have an enthusiastic following.
