I really enjoyed this presentation: both performances took my wife and I back to Siciliy and Italy, and made us feel as it we were back in the old country. The singing was truly masterful, with very memorable performances from all. Todd Thomas (Tonio) and Allan Glassman (Canio) in Pagliacci took our breath away - very believable and dramatic. Susan Nicely also did a wonderful job as Mama Lucia. There were some minor set annoyances and orchestral shortcomings, but all in all a great performance by the cast and AZ opera.
The quality of the voices and acting was superb. The attempt to create a busy Italian courtyard/piazza by having children running back and forth on the small stage was less effective. I also strongly suggest an on time curtain. This should become the standard for all performances.
Arizona Opera: Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci was outstanding! We enjoyed every minute! Bravo!
The sets were beautifully and cleverly created to support both operas on the bill. The singing was masterful, the acting excellent and the music well-done. I marvel at the Baritone's ability to play a major role in both operas. It came together very well and was most enjoyable. My only disappointment was the decision by the director to set both operas in the 1930s rather than the original time frame of the 1890s. Although I realize that this time setting has been done before, I would prefer staying true to the original composers' image. I believe that opera-goers do not need to be coddled by costumes that imply a modern time. I don't understand the motivation unless there is an intention to create a political undercurrent. An added bonus was the Q&A after the performance with cast members. Thank you!
Nice evening out. had not been to an opera in 20 years.
Overall, we enjoyed the performances, especially the orchestra. The stage lighting in Cavalleria Rusticana was poor (too dim). The action takes place on an Easter Sunday morning and should be very bright and sunny. It was difficult at times to see. In contrast, I Pagliacci takes place close to midnight but was well illuminated. Also, in my opinion, the procession in Cavalleria was overdone. The person carrying a massive crucifix all by himself must have had enormous strength.
