About

GRAMMY® Award-Winning & Multi-GRAMMY® Award Nominated Vocalist CATHERINE RUSSELL presents "Swing Cats Ball" a homage to Catherine's dad Luis Russell, along with incredible singers who worked with him, including Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, and many others!

Catherine Russell's band includes MATT MUNISTERI (Guitar); SEAN MASON (Piano); and TAL RONEN (Bass). They have performed at major festivals on four continents, while also selling out concert halls from SFJazz Miner Auditorium in San Francisco, to Carnegie Hall in New York City, to Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow.

Catherine's professional life began early. After graduating with honors from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she toured and recorded with Carrie Smith, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, Toshi Reagon and Rosanne Cash, among others, appearing on over 200 albums.

Catherine Russell's 2006 debut album ‘Cat' garnered rave reviews, paving the way for her 2008 sophomore release, ‘Sentimental Streak'. Catherine Russell's third album, ‘Inside This Heart of Mine', reached #1 on JazzWeek and Roots Music Report radio charts, while also charting on Billboard and reaching #1 on the iTunes Jazz Chart.

Catherine Russel's fourth album, ‘Strictly Romancin' was released in February 2012, and was awarded Prix du Jazz Vocal ("Vocal Album of The Year") by the French Jazz Academy. In 2012, Catherine Russell also received a GRAMMY® Award as a featured artist on the soundtrack album for the HBO-TV series, Boardwalk Empire.

In February 2014, Catherine Russell released her 5th solo album, 'Bring It Back' - and received a notoriously rare and highly coveted "5 Star Review" in Downbeat Magazine. In September 2016, Catherine Russell released her 6th solo album, titled 'Harlem On My Mind' and received a GRAMMY® Award Nomination for "Best Jazz Vocal Album". Her 7th album as a leader, 'Alone Together', was released in March 2019 and held the #1 position on the Jazz Week 2019 Year End Chart for national airplay and received her second GRAMMY® Award Nomination for "Best Jazz Vocal Album".

Russell's versatility shines through on an array of recordings including adding harmony vocals on albums by Sarah Jarosz (a GRAMMY® Award-Winner for "Best Americana Album in 2021"), Brett Eldredge, and Little Feat, while also contributing a song on renowned banjo player Tony Trischka's album 'Shall We Hope'. Russell continues to tour with Steely Dan, as recently as in 2021.

In addition, Catherine has appeared as a featured vocalist with today's leading big bands and symphony orchestras including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Vince Giordano's Nighthawks, Count Basie Orchestra, Andy Farber and His After Midnight Orchestra, Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Russia, Miami's New World Symphony, The Philly Pops, and The Pasadena Pops Orchestra. Most recently, Russell joined forces with John Pizzarelli to perform a salute to Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra.

Catherine Russel's repertoire features a selection of gems from the 1920's through the Present; vital interpretations, bursting with soul and humor. With an off-the-beaten-path song selection, sparkling acoustic swing, and a stunning vocal approach, Catherine Russell has joined the ranks of the greatest interpreters and performers of American Popular Song.

  • Marvelous Evening

by Jerryduck on 8/8/23Rating: 5 out of 5

I have listened to and followed Catherine Russell for about 20 years and was thrilled to see her name pop up for a gig at Jimmy’s Club in Portsmouth. I immediately booked the best seats I could find. My wife loves her as well so I didn’t tell her who we were seeing until we got there. The venue is beautiful as are the acoustics. Her three piece band was perfection. The piano player was beyond incredible. He could have played all night solo and everyone would have loved the show. Her guitarist and music director was terrific as well and she allowed each musician to frequently display their chops which were substantial. As for Russell, she was sublime. Her timing and phrasing and her gift of swinging effortlessly through a song was astounding. Her personality equals her vocal talent and the attentive audience gave her plenty of love all night finishing with a standing ovation and a beautiful encore. Hats of to Jimmy’s for booking her and please, please bring her back!

  • TriC Jazzfest

by dg on 9/16/21Cain Park - Cleveland HeightsRating: 4 out of 5

My friend and I both loved seeing the emerging artists, the wonderful sound system and the seats. Truly a wonderful Jazzfest. Dominic was amazing, I loved Lakecia Benjamin. My friend loved Samara Joy. Christian Sands was terrific for both of us. Neither one of us understood the music of Marquis Hill. We didn't feel what he was trying to say. The next day, we loved Bria, Emmet Cohen and truly enjoyed Harp vs Harp. We left after three songs by Catherine Russell. While we both loved her voice, personally I wasn't thrilled by her material selection. The three songs we did hear reminded me of music my grandfather listened to. If Grandpa were alive now, he'd be about 110. When I heard about food trucks, I was excited because I've experienced the food truck gathering downtown and that has a lot of lovely choices. While the food here was good (from the cafe), there wasn't a fruit or vegetable in sight. I missed that. I do hope that there is another Jazzfest at this venue as it was very relaxed and enjoyable.

  • Excellent Show

by JimboCC on 4/17/18Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

If you are a fan of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holliday type music, this show is for you. John Pizzarelli does a good job handling the Sinatra songs. He's not quite Old Blue Eyes, but he is a very good singer and great guitarist. Catherine Russell is just a vocal phenom. Incredible range and power she truly understands the subtleties of Holliday's genre. She can give breathless quiet notes and then just power through when it calls for it. I do want to take the time to praise the ensemble accompanying the stars. Besides John's guitar, there was a grand piano, regular bass ans drums. They were all excellent on their instruments. They were definitely in synch with each other and it showed. The entire show had crisp, clean and clean sound. It was quite refreshing to hear instead of the over blown sound from the other shows (here's looking at you Brian Culthbertson). Lateky the sound mixing has been atrocious but this show was just spot on. Enjoy this show. This is a really great show for the genre.

Catherine & her band are world class musicians. The food was tasty and a good variety (i.e., omelet station, greens, salad & oxtails).

  • Catherine Russell RULES!!

by MiddleAgedRocker on 12/15/11Scullers Jazz Club - CambridgeRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Catherine Russell a couple of times at Scullers Jazz Club. She has a wonderful style and sings a very eclectic mix of music. She can start with a raucous Fats Waller song and then take it down with a Sam Cooke ballad. Her band is a group of very talanted musicians. I have seen her as a back-up vocalist with Steely Dan and the Dukes of September. Catherine's CDs have a regular presence on my CD player. I never miss a chance to see her when she is in the Boston area.
