    Cat's Great in Any State

by amanduhb52 on 8/29/11Webster Hall - New York

This was a great show. I've loved Cat ever since I heard Free. Her voice is melty and smoky and such a natural force, her band is amazing, and I love how it took a good ear to recognize the slowed down interpretations of all her songs. I like that separation of live and recorded music, as though they are different species. It was a little sad to see Chan drinking. I was really glad when I heard about her health and sobriety back in 2008, 2009. I had heard about her performances when she was in good health and was expecting something a little more vibrant. The audience did not stick around for an encore, sadly. No judgement on Chan. Sober or not, she is an amazing artist and my favorite of all time. We all gots problems...isn't that what music is all about? I just hope she is around and able to record more and more music in the years to come. I would see her anytime I got the chance. You go Chan!

    meh

by wesnyc on 8/29/11Webster Hall - New York

Cat Power show was very disappointing. Low energy, not engaging Chan was determined it seems to play all of her most depressing, dark music that night. The pace of the show never picked up from a slow, morose note and Chan never once engaged with the crowd or seemed to care that anyone was there.

Very Boring Show = Cat Powers

by newnadasurfer on 8/28/11Webster Hall - New York

If you aren't already a giant Cat Powers fan, I can't imagine seeing them in concert and becoming a bigger fan than you already were. They keep the stage so dark you can't see their faces at all, and Webster Hall isn't so big a venue that this should be a problem. They also played every song super slow, even ones that were more up tempo on their albums. Finally, for 10 minutes in the middle of the show, they all left the stage and left a repeating tone on the keyboard the entire time!

    great music

by maxvon on 8/28/11Webster Hall - New York

Cat Power's music is beautiful and entrancing. The musicians are great. I only missed seeing more of her face (never a spot of light on her face–ever!) She seemed to want to hide from the audience.

    Cat power

by Gianluca on 8/28/11Webster Hall - New York

Great concert. poor costumer service at Webster hall. I tried to reach them via phone and website to figure out the exact time of Cat Power performance. They never replied, I arrived there at 9:10 assuming that, as usual, the show would start at 10PM, but the concert had already started at 8:30. Why is the exact concert starting time always so obscure and hidden?

    Really dull, uninspired Cat show

by CatPowerLover on 8/28/11Webster Hall - New York

Worst concert I have seen in a long time. Dark room, no lights on the band, 10-minutes of obnoxious feedback distortion as they took a break.... just a garbage show.

painfully seatless for hours. cp overreacted

by joyejoy on 8/27/11Webster Hall - New York

cp's voice is magical. if the sound is not perfect, the show must still go on. it was frustrating to see her overreact to the sound quality, and had she just gone with it the show could have been transportive.

    Snore Fest

by NYCNYCNCY on 8/27/11Webster Hall - New York

I have everyone of her albums, so don't get me wrong she's an incredible artist, but seeing her live for the 4th time I start resenting paying $35. She either needs to play venues like Bowery Ballroom or similar size, or stick to the studio. It's dull otherwise darling.

I believe in you, good woman!

by JoFR on 2/9/11Music Box - Los Angeles

I am a huge fan of Cat Power. She is the reason why I was inspired to play my piano again. Her voice is beautiful as her lyrics. When I heard she was playing at the Music Box in Los Angeles, I didn't have to think twice. But, gee was it disappointing. I never walked out of a concert until now. In fact, a few people walked out as well. First, she took a pretty long time to come out. Second, the stage was so dark, I was barely able to see her and the band. Last and most importantly, she was simply not rocking out. All her songs were the same, one after the other; slow, painful and so depressing. She rarely talked, though she would crack a smile here and there. The poor girl looked completely exhausted after every song. I'm guessing she was drunk or maybe a little, possibly depressed?I hate to leave such a negative review, but she broke my heart. I will give her another chance, because I believe in her.

    Cat Power.

by uiop23 on 2/9/11The Music Box - Hollywood

I thought the second opening act was rather misaligned with Cat Power's style. When she finally came out at almost eleven, she seemed brooding, morose, in every way the suffering artist. The Music Box is an amazing venue and always very intimate. Where Cat Power's musical talent thrives, her stage presence whimpers. She has an amazing voice but at times, it seems her high gets in the way of singing. She seemed ill. But she gave me a flower, and for this I am thankful. Over all a nice experience.

by BJM42 on 2/8/11The Music Box - Hollywood

The concert started very late (10:45 PM) The performance was lackadaisical and she seemed indifferent to the audience. Audience members started leaving more than half an hour before the end of the concert.

    Chan Marshall

by meowpower on 2/8/11The Music Box - Hollywood

It was a dream come true to see her in person again, and the night was worth missing the super bowl for. The two opening ands were quite complementary to Cat Power. The beat , ? and some 5 man group called , you got me ? the deep something.. Chan herself and the band was sharp, i loved the smooth and drawn out version of the Greatest and she delivered a classy L.A. show for the ages. But if i had something to say in critisim i would state that i was expecting more ..... maybe she was leaving me wanting more , but i would have still if she played these arms of mine and or new york new york, or the end of the street or anything more rare , she sounded sweet and wounded SO BEAUTIFUL the venue music box was cramped and uncomfortable but

fantastic! new songs - and recreations of old songs - such a marvelous voice - opening bands were great too, 1 kinda arcade fire-ish, the second (the meek) sounded like Suicide, or MBV

    More like kitten power...

by Vkilmer on 2/8/11Music Box - Los Angeles

Love Cat Power and I've missed her several times when she's performed out here in Los Angeles for one reason or another. I was super excited to see her at the Music Box. Specially since I had to erase from my ears the disaster of a half time Superbowl show. Her voice sounded amazing, but she was so freakin' odd. She kept turning her back from the audience. Hardly said a word as far as interaction with the audience went. People were falling asleep, my friend included. She felt disconnected the whole time. What a freakin' disappointment to her fans. Honey, now-a-days it's a luxury for most people to be able to afford to go see a concert the very least you could have done was put on a good show for your fans that came out to support you. Horrible. I will still buy her records, because I love her voice, but I will never waste money seeing her live again.

Cat Power is off the wagon

by Pato84 on 2/8/11The Music Box - Hollywood

I love Cat Power so very much but I was very disappointed. It appeared that she was under the influence of some heavy chemicals. She was mostly unresponsive and seemed to be lost in a daze. Mrs. Marshall's voice is still amazingly beautiful but it just wasn't a good performance. The opening band "Demo Team" wasn't my type of music at all either. The 2nd opener "The Meek" was fantastic (and very hot) however. I'd definitely go watch them again. As for Cat Power, I won't go see her again unless she sobers up.

    Hmmmm....

by DJMARCH on 2/8/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Enjoyable, but too down-beat. Chan was gracious, her singing is fantastic and her band was excellent, but the whole set was done at the same pacing and tempo with none of her more upbeat or more popular arrangements; no "The Greatest", no "Lived in Bars", no "Nude as the News" and no popular covers that I could discern. She had two marginal opening groups with bad mixing or mikes, and with a lot of DJ time between them. Her show started really late, especially for a Sunday night. I was somewhat surprised by the number of people around me who left her show early. I stuck it out but didn't bother to see if there was an encore.

Hit and Miss, and miss, and miss, and what?

by norCalJoJo on 1/6/11Uptown Theatre - Napa

I was really looking forward to see Cat Power, especially since the Uptown is a nice, small venue and I had third row center seats. She was great for the first 2 or 3 songs, amazing voice. After the first couple of songs she fell apart. My best guess is that the drugs kicked in. She messed up lyrics, left the stage when the band wasn't sure what to do, sat at a piano for one song and didn't play it at all, and was generally just a mess. I love her music, love her voice, and I hope she's more stable in the future. Given the performance I saw though, I wouldn't go out of my way to see her until I was positive that she had cleaned up (again).

Needed a flashlight to find her!

by Julietytyty on 12/19/10Apollo Theater - New York

I love her music, have most of her cds, but what a let down the concert was! The big problem was that the stage was completely in the dark; all I could see were the silhouettes of the musicians, for the whole show. There remainded a very dim light on her face, could barely see her either. I'd never go back, I'll save my money and just listen to her terrific cds!

Where In The World Was Cat Power?

by Vitalia on 11/9/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

My wife and I love Cat Power's recordings. My Daughters love Cat Power's music. Heavy, raspy, sexy vocals. Great cover interpretations. Minimalist, original style. Like most, we highly anticipated this performance at the Uptown Theatre. Wow! What a disappointing live performance. Chan Marshall wandered onto the Uptown Theatre stage as if she had just gone for walk around downtown Napa, taking in the sights, after a day of gardening. No genuine stage presence. Odd hand gestures and movements which didn't seem in sync with the songs. She seemed to be singing mostly to herself, in another world, with surprisingly limited vocal range. The strangest moment was when Chan suddenly left the stage and the band for no apparent reason, for what felt like forever. (By the way, even the band looked dumbfounded). The audience started to shout at the band to "play something!" And then, just as suddenly, Chan came back to sing a couple more tunes and mindlessly throw flowers at the audience, again with no apparent purpose. Now we know why this concert wasn't a sell-out. A tame, leashed performance by Cat Power.
