Carolina Hurricanes History

The Carolina Hurricanes were established in Raleigh in 1997 after relocating from Hartford, Connecticut, where the National Hockey League franchise was originally founded in 1979. Since their arrival in North Carolina, the Hurricanes have made the playoffs 11 times, captured six division championships, two Eastern Conference titles and the 2006 Stanley Cup Championship.

The team also hosted the 2004 NHL Draft and the 2011 NHL All-Star Game at Lenovo Center, where they play their home games. When the Hurricanes made the playoffs in 2001, against the defending Stanley Cup Champions New Jersey Devils, they lost the series but came back from a 3-0 deficit to force a sixth game — marking what many believed to be the start of real hockey in the Research Triangle.

The 2005-2006 season marked the best in the Hurricanes' history, as the team finished with 112 points, beating the previous franchise-best record of 94 points. They ended up beating the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, marking the first time in NHL history that two former World Hockey Association teams faced off in the Final.

There's nothing like a Carolina Hurricane's game. Win or loose, its a great time. The greatest and loudest house in the NHL. Thats why we are rated #1 in hockey and #2 overall. LETS GO CANES!!!! Stanley Cup 2009-2010 here we come.

  • Pens Sweep!

    by dlxplan1 on 7/13/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I highly enjoyed the game as it was the clinching game of the Eastern Conference Finals. The atmosphere was great- the Hurricanes fans were really into the game. You would never have known that they were facing elimination- even at the end when the game was decided the Canes fans never sat down. All in all, a great experience!

  • Great Time

by manning on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Even though a loss to the Penguins the atmosphere was amazing. Had a great time and can't wait till next season.

  • Wow, Mario Lemieux was in the box behind us!

by FredC on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time my son and I sat on the second level of the RBC Center. Most games we are up high in the cheap seats. These seats were great and, as the title of this review indicates, Mario Lemieux was in the box behind us. It was a great game, Stahl brother verses Stahl brother, and Sidney Crosby is always great to watch. Next time we go, we will probably be back on the third level, but this was a night to remember with tickets online from Ticketmaster.

Great atmosphere...once in a life time experience (but the Canes WILL be back to the Stanley Cup Finals again!) If you get the chance to go to a game....GO!

  • Let's Go 'Canes!

by HurricaneKay on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

if you've never experienced a Stanley Cup playoff game, you should consider it. i'm not much of a sports fan, but NHL hockey hooked me from the first time i went to a Carolina Hurricanes game. there's so much see, with that non-stop energy of the players and the atmosphere of the RBC Center is electric. my husband prefers baseball, but for me, hockey is THE game. tail-gaiting before the game, having excellent seats and the enthusiasm of the crowd: hockey has it all. now, i wish the 'Canes could have beaten Pittsburgh in that Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final, but that wasn't to be. still, we got to see the eventual Stanley Cup champions, which was pretty cool.

  • A road stop for the Pens on their road to the cup

    by icecats19 on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

What a great game. We kept hearing about how loud the arena would be, but the Canes were no match for the Penguins. A lot of Canes fans were being poor sports, but I guess no one likes losing. Especially not as bad as the Penguins destroyed them!!!

  • Let's Go Pens!!!

by katrinatess on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I got my ticket the day before the game, drove up to Raleigh, and saw a great game! Well, it was 6-2, so it was probably more enjoyable to me and my fellow Pens fans. But the Canes fans were great, and the RBC center was a great place to watch a hockey game!

  • NHL Easter Conference FInals Game 3

by Teacup on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Other than the final score, the event was excellent. The atmosphere was terrifiic. The food was good, too.

  • Let's Go Pens

Game 3 of a 4 game sweep. Pens win. Let's Go Pens.

One of the best events I have ever gone to. Even though we lost it was an incredible experience. Would def. do it again.

  • Go Pens!

by TigerHQ on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Most incredible hockey experience ever! Front row on the glass where my pens attacked twice!

  • Pittsburgh fans were obnoxious

by hockeynut on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

The Penquins beat the 'Canes in Raleigh and the Pittsburgh fans were obnoxious. They were taunting our goalie. They took over the upper bowl at the RBC Center. I don't know where the 'Canes fans were.

  • Pens dominated Game 3

by BobD on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Spending 22 years of my life in Pittsburgh, I jumped on the opportunity to see Game 3 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurriscanes. It was especially "cool" since my best friend from College came in from Atlanta. We paired up with some good friends (Canes fans) and rocked a tail gate party. Lots of fun. As for the game, Carolina scored first.. and was in command until a late 2 goal outburst by the Pens to close the 1st period. From there, the Pens gradually took the game over and went on to a 6-2 victory. From there, they went on to win the Stanley Cup. Having been to a game along the way in person, I feel like I was a true fan supporting their team. Thanks, Bob

  • RBC center was fantastic

by moseleymom on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

We went to Raleigh for the Eastern Conference Finals. The RBC center was absolutely beautiful. We had Champions club seats, the food was great, the four drinks per seat was an added bonus. We took a taxi there so other fans even gave us their drink vouchers. It helped that we are Pens fans and we won the game, but the Hurricane fans were the classiest and nicest fans we have found in the NHL. We would definitely go back for another game!

  • Playoff Hockey

by PackerBacker on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Best seats I've ever had. I could actually follow the puck!

  • Who knew hockey in the south could be fun???

by FormerCapsFan on 7/12/09RBC Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Every hockey game I've ever been to has been in NY or DC so I wasn't very enthusiastic about hockey in the south. Boy, was I wrong. The parking lot was packed with tailgaters, the crowed was a sea of 'Canes jerseys, the people around us were totally into it, and it was by far the most diverse crowd I've ever seen at an NHL game. Carolina loves their 'Canes and they made sure the team knew it. Up north, most people take the subway to a game after work and get sushi or tapas beforehand. I had no idea what I was missing! We'll be back next season. Although the cheerleaders may have been a bit much!
