Carolina Hurricanes History

The Carolina Hurricanes were established in Raleigh in 1997 after relocating from Hartford, Connecticut, where the National Hockey League franchise was originally founded in 1979. Since their arrival in North Carolina, the Hurricanes have made the playoffs 11 times, captured six division championships, two Eastern Conference titles and the 2006 Stanley Cup Championship.

The team also hosted the 2004 NHL Draft and the 2011 NHL All-Star Game at Lenovo Center, where they play their home games. When the Hurricanes made the playoffs in 2001, against the defending Stanley Cup Champions New Jersey Devils, they lost the series but came back from a 3-0 deficit to force a sixth game — marking what many believed to be the start of real hockey in the Research Triangle.

The 2005-2006 season marked the best in the Hurricanes' history, as the team finished with 112 points, beating the previous franchise-best record of 94 points. They ended up beating the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, marking the first time in NHL history that two former World Hockey Association teams faced off in the Final.

  • Been coming here for years - favorite place on earth

    by caniac12 on 8/23/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I've been going here a couple times a season for years, always enjoyed it. I've never had a bad experience here. I love how the stadium is tucked away in the woods and is very spacious, with plenty of on-site parking including adjacent parking lots (Carter-Finley and NCSU Practice Facility). The arena staff run a tight ship, the concessions, concourse, seating and bathrooms are always clean and pleasant. Love the team store (The Eye), even though it can be a little pricey. Seats run a large range of prices, so there is something for both people with lots of money to spend and people with a little less to spend. Upper level tickets can be found as low as $25/person on most nights. Regardless of price or position, all seats are pleasant and offer great views of the ice and jumbotron. I've been going to PNC Arena regularly for many years. For all but one of those many dozens of games, I sat in the upper level seating (third floor) and I have never had an issue seeing the puck on the ice or the jumbotron above it. PNC Arena has always and will always hold a special place in my heart. I wholeheartedly recommend a trip to PNC Arena to everyone. Thank you for reading my review. Go Canes!

  • Game 7 in the Loudest House in the NHL

by Justin on 6/2/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

The atmosphere of this place is insane. Before the game there are tailgates surrounding the arena with so many people to meet. Everyone is always so inviting and very nice. The game itself was fantastic. The fans came out in full force with a noise level I’ve never experienced before in any other place. It was truly remarkable to be apart of. The Hurricanes and arena staff do a great job with their presentation as well, only feeding more to an atmosphere that is already electric. Even though the Hurricanes were simply outplayed in this game, the atmosphere of PNC Arena made this an unforgettable experience that I would recommend to anyone.

  • Great atmosphere

by Jeannette on 6/2/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

We really enjoyed the whole vibe starting with the tailgate partying. Not popular coming from Canada. Music was great too!

  • What an awesome experience!

    by Marc W on 6/2/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Yes, we lost. But the crowd was raucous, and it was everything I imagined of live playoff hockey! Great emotion and tempo all the way to the end. I enjoyed the fact that we restricted tickets, but there was still a ton of blue there. They perfectly epitomized everything we all assume about New Yorkers. Could have done without them insulting our goalie after an injury, especially around the little ears. Those words might be salt in the big city, but a guest should respect their surroundings. Cannot wait to see the concessions changes for next season.

  • Great Experience

by Tony on 6/2/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

We really enjoyed the club level seats. I normally like to sit as close to the glass as possible, but club level is great too! The chairs were nice and comfortable with plenty of room. Food was good; pizza, salad, meatballs, chicken wings, boneless ribs (the best thing there), pork tenderloin, some sides, and an awesome dessert spread. Free drinks were a plus too as were the unlimited drinks (water and soda) for our kiddo.

  • Rangers/Canes

Great time with my daughter. Wish tickets weren’t so expensive, would love to go again

  • AMAZINGGGGG

    by Hillari T on 5/24/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Loudest house in the NHL. The play off game was absolutely amazing. Staff are always nice and accommodating. Great food and there is no bad seat. We were in the 300 and could see the entire rink.

  • Canes playoff

Best experience of my life for my first hockey game ever.

  • Awesome Game but bad seat choice

    by Emoguy75 on 5/22/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Getting tickets to go to a playoff NHL game was amazing. The PNC arena is an amazing venue as it is. However, I learned a very valuable lesson. I have been to numerous events at the PNC arena but have never sat last row in upper sections. Section 302 row N seats 6,7,8 never again!!! Those seats are directly under a wall mounted air conditioning vent!!! We had a great view of the Hurricane’s attacking zone, but the constant blowing of Arctic air on the back of our necks really took away from our enjoyment. I’m a huge hurricanes fan, and have been to numerous games, but lesson learned, spend a few more bucks for lower rows or bring a hoodie.

  • Superb Hockey

by Kipper on 5/21/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

A great result for the Canes. Even though the result was similar they appeared to have a lot more fire in their belly for the first two periods. Brendan Smith’s goal when short handed was the cream on the cake - just excellent play. Now to see if they can perform in front of the Rangers’ fans. I went to Edmonton for game 6 in 2006. Being an away supporter can be a lonely place. I think we lost 5 or 6 to 0 and the Oilers’ fans went crazy that night whilst we shrank in our room unconsoled by Don Cherry! Good luck Canes, go get ‘em!

  • Be careful what seat you pick

    by L. B. on 5/15/22Rating: 3 out of 5

If you’re an average size human being do not buy a seat on the corners of the bowl. When I got to my seat in 337 I couldn’t squeeze between the cup holders in the seat. It was narrower than the rally towels. When I went to customer service they told me it was sold out and I could watch the tv’s at the bar. I was in tears having just been able to score tickets for my daughter and myself. They did move us after the game started but it was embarrassing and I ended up missing almost all the first period. Something should be noted when you buy those seats.

  • Great Venue for Any Hockey Fan

by MSull on 5/7/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been coming to this venue since it opened. They claim to be the loudest barn in the NHL. Carolina has a passionate fan base and show lots of passion. Easy in and out of parking

  • Decent stadium, small chairs

    by N/A on 5/7/22PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 3 out of 5

The entry/exit isn't horrible compared to some other arenas. The parking is a little ridiculous considering how far away you park. A 15 minute walk for $30??? No thanks. The food options are good and reasonable enough for stadium food. The seats, however, are insanely small. You're going to be squished into your seat and touching shoulders and feet with the person next to you. One of the least comfortable arenas I've ever sat in.
