    Quite the Opera!

    by Wendy B on 8/4/23

Carmina Burana presented as Carl Orff could never have imagined! Performances were stellar with serious physicality, voice and breath control. Singing while being cooked on a spit and while bathing were new to me! Very enjoyable- just be sure to be ready for a very different Carmina Burana than you’ve ever seen before!

    Weird

    by Bean on 8/3/23

The event doors did not open at the specified time according to the email from Artpark. The performance then started nearly an hour late. AND there was no way to know what was going on.

    Venue Disappointment

    by Bill S on 8/1/23

We completely enjoyed the Carmina Burana production. But that was preceded by a mess. The evening schedule was supposed to be gates open at 7p, Shakespeare in the Park performs on the terrace at 7p, Harmonia Chamber Singers perform at 8p, and Carmina Burana would start at roughly 9p. The gates opened at 7p, but access to the venue seating was not allowed - so nearly everyone was forced to stand on the terrace. Shakespeare in the Park wasn't actually a performance - it consisted of one person training a falcon and a couple others milling through the crowd making small talk. Harmonia Chamber Singers did start at 8p, but not in the venue. They only had a small group which sang at a few different places within the crowd on the terrace. But most people didn't pay much attention and the din of the talking and nearby generators made it difficult to hear them even if you were only standing a dozen feet away. We think they performed for about half an hour (hard to tell since we couldn't always hear/see them). The doors to the actual venue finally opened up at around 8:45, which allowed us to sit after standing around for nearly 2 hours. Everything was good after that.

    Not Great

    by Mike on 8/1/23

I went into this expecting more. The orchestra and chorus weren't loud enough, and the dancers were definitely not very professional. The main singers were fantastic, but the overall presentation was lackluster.

    Not your Mother's Carmina Burana

    by Kat on 8/1/23

It was fantastic! Definitely not child friendly which made it even better.

    Amazing and Bizarre

    by Nick on 8/1/23

If one is familiar with the music of Orff, specifically Carmina Burana, this was a must see. For those not familiar, you probably actually are. The main theme was used in several movies (eg. Excalibur), TV series (eg. Glee, X Factor), and commercials. The music from the BPO and the BPO Choir exemplified the power and flow of the piece. But the show complimented the music magnificently. The performance was imaginative, explicit, and other worldly. Definitely unique and challenging for the predominately white American crowd present. Why only one show? Why not another? Artpark was sold out.

    Excellent Show

    by Mos on 8/1/23

A shaky start (Chorus & BPO were off), but a fantastic show overall. Artpark should have had more than one gate open to avoid the quarter mile long line.

    Spectacular!

    by Joe on 8/1/23

This is a brilliant production of this classic work. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus did not disappoint and La Fura dels Baus is a powerful group with top notch performers and soloists. Very moving and inspiring to see such highly developed skills and flawless performaces.
