About

As they approach their twentieth anniversary, CAKE’s adherence to their original guiding principles has only grown stronger. Formed during the nineties as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, CAKE’s democratic processes, defiant self-reliance, and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves, with no obvious peers, belonging to no school.  In addition to writing, arranging, producing, and performing their own music, they have taught themselves to engineer their recording projects in their own solar-powered studio, which actually generates more power than is needed to run it, causing the building’s electrical meter to run in reverse. CAKE’s most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, was released on their own Upbeat Records label and debuted on the US Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at #1 during 2011 -- making the album as pure an extension of the DIY aesthetic as ever attempted by an established act.

What was that weird scene with the tree givaway?

by rjcoolk on 7/13/09Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

A decent choice of tunes, but the show was ruined for many people (some who walked out) during John McCrea's insane 15-minute rant during Cake's miscalculated tree givaway. "It's a nectarine tree!"

    cake was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by kevpb on 7/13/09Terminal 5 - New York

Cake was incredible LIVE. A lot of fun. They played all of their hits plus some. Plus new stuff possibly form the next album. The venue got a lot of bad reviews online when I looked it up. But my friend and I loved it. Security was just right. Bars on every floor. We never waited more than 2-3 minutes for a drink and the music sounded great no matter where we were. I would definately go to terminal 5 again. Had a blast!!!!!!!!!!

No question why they're one of my favorite bands

by Willd on 7/13/09Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

It was an awsome show. They previewed a couple of tracks from the upcoming release. I would have liked to heard more new stuff. Lowell Mem auditorium is an outstanding venue for musicians to hear other musicians. The sounds are fresh. John M is a poet.

    Cake Rules!

by tsquared on 7/13/09Terminal 5 - New York

If you have never listened to this band, I highly recommend you buy, download or borrow a Cake CD today! The only band in the last ten years that I have gotten excited about...excellent song writing and a unique sound all their own. They finally played New York as the only band on the bill...finally! Thanks Cake for a great night, come back soon!

    More Cake!

by SistahPoet on 7/13/09Terminal 5 - New York

Let me start at the end and work my way back. Cake closed with War Pigs. If this were not a 50 word minimum review, I could stop there. That song alone is worth the price of admission. Go see cake when you want to lose your sense of space and time and be consumed by the sounds. Sounds. Not sights. Not sexy lead men and woman. Just sounds. That night I heard the sounds of many an instrument coming together holding me prisoner for part one of the "no opener" show.I was afforded a respite at intermission only to be drawn right back to where I started for part two. It wasn't until my joining the War Pigs sing along that I felt the strange catharsis. I am free to go but I just can't stand the thought. No more Cake...until next time.

I had my Cake...and ate it too!!

by MichelleLynne on 7/13/09Terminal 5 - New York

Amazing show - truly - not just a greatest hits concert like so many nowadays, but a true sampling of songs from all albums...And the many multi-tiered sing-a-longs were great...Ca-ke-oake!

An Evening with Cake at Terminal 5 in NYC

by JerseyCakeFan on 7/13/09Terminal 5 - New York

I was happy to find out that the poor reviews of Terminal 5 were a bit harsh. We had a great time at the show! I would recommend for a fan to see Cake and I would see another show at Terminal 5. As for Terminal 5, the stage was high enough so that you could see everything. I mean, you were a little cramped and sometimes an incredibly tall person would wander in front of you and block your view of the stage ... but what do you expect from a General Admission concert? On a good note, people kept moving, so that tall person was only there for song or two. I have to admit that it was nice to stand near the bar, so you could get a beer at your leisure without missing a moment of the show! The only thing I couldn't figure out was how to get VIP tickets? The people in VIP had the most fun because they had chairs, an excellent view of the show, and were not crammed in like sardines. On another good note, the concert was not TOO loud. I did not need to wear ear plugs and was even able to talk to my boyfriend during the show (which is fun because it's nice to say "I love this song" and be heard! Cake was excellent! They played a lot of songs and performed for about 2 hours. They took a short intermission, which was nice because you had a moment to go to the bathroom and the crowd moved around a bit (which was good for giving tall people the opportunity to block someone else). Cake was definitely fun to watch and sounded great!

    Cake rocks!

by Rsoxgirl80 on 7/13/09Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

Cake rocked out as they usually do. However, i was disappointed with the amount of time wasted while they figured out what songs they were going to play since there was no setlist. Also the stupid "pick someone from the audience to get a tree" guessing game went waaaaaaay too long and the crowd, including myself, started to turn on them. I know that cake doesn't charge for tix what other bands do, but they still need to keep in mind their audience. I love them and will continue to go see them in concert but I think a little more organization couldn't hurt. Thanks for the great show and keep those witty lyrics comin'! Great great music performance!

    Cake was the bomb-dig-a-ty!

by Elbo on 7/13/09Terminal 5 - New York

I had read negative reviews about Terminal 5 as a venue so I went in expecting the worst. Much to my pleasant surprise- I had the opposite experience there. Cake sounded fantastic- they played all the crowd favorites- along with some other surprises. The crowd wasn't too young or "tweeny" and there were plenty of bars to get your drink on. The entire night was a success- I hope Cake comes back to the tri-state area soon- I fell in love all over again with them.

    Cake rocked the house.

by GirlieGirl on 7/13/09Terminal 5 - New York

Cake was outrageous. I enjoyed every minute of it. The venue had a perfect feel to compliment the band. Everyone that worked there or served me in some way was very friendly. I've seen Cake several times before, and this was by far one of the best experiences. Even better than smaller venues!

    Cake in Lowell

by ylimehere on 7/13/09Lowell Memorial Auditorium - Lowell

Love Cake - it was a tiny venue, but they are great performers... They definitely spent waaaaay too long trying to give away a self-fruiting tangerine tree, what could have been a 2 minute fun little banter was made into a 1/2 hour long noise session. Made for some awkward moments. But then again, it was very memorable.. that's the only thing stopping it from being a 5 star :)
