Butler Bulldogs Women’s Basketball History

The Butler University women’s basketball team played their first season in 1975 and ascended to Division I competition ahead of the 1986-1987 season. From 1986 to 2012, the Butler Bulldogs were members of the Horizon League, then transferred to the Atlantic 10 Conference for the 2012-13 season and entered their current home in the Big East Conference in 2013. 

As part of the Horizon League, the Butler women’s basketball team earned two regular season conference championships, in 1993 and 1998, as well as one conference tournament championship and one ticket to the NCAA March Madness tournament, both in 1996. The Bulldogs have made eight appearances in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), including back-to-back berths in 2024 and 2025 and the Bulldogs’ first Super 16 advancement during the latter tournament.

The Butler University Bulldogs women’s basketball team tips off for home games at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nicknamed “Indiana's Basketball Cathedral,” Hinkle Fieldhouse opened as the U.S.’s largest basketball arena in 1928 under the name Butler Fieldhouse. Along with the Butler women’s basketball team, Hinkle Fieldhouse hosts the Butler University Bulldogs men’s basketball team and gymnastics team, and served as the iconic setting for the fictional championship game played in the 1986 sports film Hoosiers.
