About

Broken Bells' cinematic left-field pop is the result of a meeting of great musical minds -- multi-instrumentalist/producer Danger Mouse and Shins' guitarist/singer James Mercer have pooled their talents to create one of the most strikingly original projects in contemporary indie rock, selling over 400,000 copies of their lushly melancholic 2010 self-titled debut album. In 2013, the duo released "Holding on for Life," the lead single from their 2014 sophomore album After the Disco, which they've been previewing for fans on a series of critically-acclaimed 2013 live concerts. After meeting in 2004 at Denmark's Roskilde Festival, the duo collaborated on the track "Insane Lullaby" before deciding to make their creative partnership more permanent as Broken Bells. Holing up in Danger Mouse's LA home studio in 2008, they recorded "The High Road" and "The Ghost Inside," tracks which would ultimately become singles from their 2010 debut. The album's melodic mix of psychedelic sounds, expanded vocal registers, and live instrumentation won over both critics and fans, reaching No. 1 on iTunes and No. 7 on the Billboard 200. On tour, Broken Bells is backed by a full band, playing sold-out concerts throughout North America and Europe. Mercer's haunting vocals and Danger Mouse's ability to effortlessly move between instruments have been a hit with ticket buyers, building anticipation for the 2014 release of After the Disco.

    Dope

    by Folg99 on 10/13/10Terminal 5 - New York

The concert was great, Sold out so it was crowded. My only complaint is that they played for only an hour and then came back for a 2 song encore. I do understand that they only have one album but they should have had a better opening band.

A hypnotic evening with Broken Bells

by Lightairwalker on 10/8/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I was not too familiar with Broken Bells' band members’ previous musical forays but I did like their ITunes release "The High Road" late last year. Broken Bells consist of James Mercer and Brian Burton and were accompanied by several backup players. Their music was infectious from the first song! With harmonious guitars and vocals Broken Bells creates a melodic sound that kept the audience in a musical hypnotic state.

    Worth the drive

by BoiseAwaits on 10/8/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Okay, we didn't drive, I flew in to celebrate my bday weekend w/o the kids. Was looking forward to a grown up night at the Fox Theater after hearing from others that it is one of the best venues to attend a show. Thought it was cool that the opening act was a part of the marquis show. My husband and I instantly liked Broken Bells because of their diverse sound within a song as well as between songs. Absolutely loved the opening song and sounds andof course the more familiar tunes--sorry guys, can't get to the itunes cash before my kids clean out the accounts to load more songs to my ipod--though our boys like you lots too. So not knowing all the songs we sat back to enjoy the show. It seemed though all the unique sounds started to meld into one. The show was simply too loud. I spent most of the show covering my ears. As a mother of four teenage boys I value the 'eyes-behind-my-head' and had to guard my hearing as much as possible. Our ears are still ringing 2 days later. As I told my 16yr old what he missed, he told me there is no such thing as too loud at a concert, perhaps I am just getting old, but that was the only bummer for us, otherwise everything else was great. I loved how one song went into the next, there was little to no talking, light show and video screen was just right and loved the use of the brass too! Everyone was right, the Fox Theater is a great venue for Broken Bells--before, during and after the show. Would love to have you come to Boise, just guard your master volume key when you get there!

    Terrible sound for Broken Bells

by Anonymous on 10/7/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The base was SO over-amped that it was painful. I was just glad that Mr. Mercer was on the stage and not in the audience so he couldn't hear how bad it was. I love the album but this show was horrible.

    Broken Bells

by Indierockers on 10/7/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

This band is awesome. It's unfortunate the sound was so bad. There was so much bass you could feel your chest pounding. Plus it was muffled. Perhaps it was our location? Will give Fox Theatre another try to see if it is just bad acoustics. Definitely recommend buying Broken Bells CD's and following this band as am sure more good music is to come from this very talented collaboration..

    AMAZINGGG

Wow, you want an amazing show with amazing music and an amazing light show? Check out Broken Bells. If you haven't heard them already, their music blends together a sort of trance style with some awesome beats and melodies. Live, it's even better =]

Bass was too loud at the Fox and the vocals where muted. Broken Bells were too reminiscent of the Shins. Personal style lacked.

    Amazing show

by RjDj on 10/7/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

loved BB at the Fox. The Fox often has crappy sound but this classy outfit had an awesome system, of course, and they played all their songs from the one record and a couple cool covers.

Broken Bells should stay in the Studio

by BRIBECK on 10/7/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The Albumn is a masterpiece...one of my favorite in the past decade. So it is hard to live up to that on a live stage. The BBs are musical geniuses however they are not performers. You rarely find a musical excellence and performance in the same package. I have seen so may musicians that are not interesting to watch on stage...the do not perform. That is fine. I think the sound guy gets failing Marks. I have heard othe shows at the Fox and they sound is usually excellent. There was way too much distortion and reverb. I think they were feeding it back at times. The sound was poor. I was up front and had to move to the back of the theater to minimize the poor effect. The sound guy ruined my experience. The Fox-Oakland is my favorite music venue in the Bay Area...gorgeous old theater. If you worship the album the way that I do, then don't see these guys live. It will dampen your appreciation for the albumn.

Broken Bells never made my ears ring before...

by Anonymous on 10/7/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

It's an unfortunate contrast when the house sound engineer is either unfamiliar with a bands material or perhaps the Oakland Fox sound system. That's the only reason I can figure as to why the subtle and complex dynamics of Broken Bells was completely lost. Instead of being drawn in to the gems of a shy friend sharing tender moments, I was forced to defend myself against boulders of sound (and occasional feedback) being thrown my way. It was fight or flight. There was a moment when I thought I should fight back, even if it was just a request from the manager to reimburse the money spent on tickets. But in the end we chose to run out early. //

    Awesome Performance

by rullrich on 10/7/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

This is one of the best performances I have seen in a long time. The way these guys filled the theater with their sound was far beyond my expectations. There were 8 guys making up the band, and they toatlly kicked ass.

    Too effing loud

by PDQuig on 10/7/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The sound was simply far too loud and distorted. I don't get why this would be the case.
