About Bristol Motor Speedway

You can tell a lot about the character of Bristol Motor Speedway from the nicknames assigned to the venue by racing fans. There are four in wide circulation: "The Last Great Colosseum" and "The Bullring" for the track's shape; "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" for its speed (cars complete laps in about 15 seconds); and "Thunder Valley" for its noise. The track is steeply banked and ringed with stadium-style seating. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third-largest sports venue in the United States and the seventh-largest in the world.

Bristol Motor Speedway History

Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the northeast corner of Tennessee, opened in 1961. It was built by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier, and R.G. Pope on the site of a former dairy farm. They drew their inspiration from a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the $600,000 Bristol track was a more intimate (and noisier) venue, and in 1969 the track was reconfigured with its signature steep banks. In 1992, BMS replaced its asphalt surface with a concrete surface that is now its other hallmark. It is something of a celebrity, having served as the basis for the fictional Motor Speedway of the South in the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

The speedway is home to races in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series East, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. In the Cup Series, racing great Richard Petty holds the track record for most Top 10 finishes (with 37) and most starts (with 60). Darrell Waltrip leads with 12 all-time wins. The all-time winningest car owner at BMS is the legendary Junior Johnson, with 21 victories. Over the course of a week in 2010, Kyle Busch made history by winning three NASCAR national series races in a single race meeting: the Truck Series race on a Wednesday, then the Nationwide Series race, and the Spring Cup Series race.

I loved watching the race. It was a totally different experience than watching it on television. This was the first short track and Bristol race that Jimmie Johnson won, and I was glad I got to be there to see it. I hope to get to go back next year.

  • What a race

by LightningLow on 3/23/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

It was a parking adventure and a long walk. Once I got there there were tons of vendors to keep things interesting as you made your way to the track. Once there they had tall boys and cool electronic gismos to keep up with your favorite drivers. the energy level was high even with a little rain. I really enjoyed it. A great way to start a company trip.

A truly surreal experience. 100,000+ fans in one place at the same time watching high powered vehicles manuever in a tight space at 100+ mph speeds. It is something that I will never forget. Getting to and from the stadium is actually pretty easy. We took a back way to and from the speedway and never really had to sit in any traffic for more than just a few minutes. They have the traffic plan down and from the time we parked until the time we were in our seats was approx. 20 minutes. Everything is very well coordinated and flows smoothly. There isn't a bad seat in the house either. we had a great view of the race from the Allison section 55 rows up. Metal seats do get uncomfortable quickly, but at least they do have a back rest.

This was my first race at Bristol and the facility at Bristol was great. Restrooms & concessions were easy to get to and the seats we had were great. It appears to me that most seats would be great.. The racing was fast and competitive with action between cars easy to watch. The wrong car won but that is okay. Getting out of the parking lot was a little slow due to letting mosy of the pedestrican traffic go before we could get on the highway.

  • Awesome Weekend

by Bristolsbaby on 3/22/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 4 out of 5

If you're a race fan and have never been to Bristol you have to put it on your MUST DO LIST!!!! This weekend's Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway was once again an awesome weekend. The race was great, the people are great and so is the excitement!! The only thing about this weekend that was sad that you could really tell the economy has effected the crowd, There were so many empty seats that it was sad. Definitly not 160,000 people this year (though it made for getting out of the track a lot quicker!!)

  • It was Grrrreat !

by Blondykay on 3/22/10Bristol Motor Speedway - BristolRating: 5 out of 5

Everything was great. From the way the traffice was controlled to the cleanliness of the facility. Of cours there was a ton of traffic but they knew what they was doing getting everyone out. I noticed all the people leaving were being nice letting others out. We are alreading planning on going to the Bristol night race. It was my boyfriend and I's first race but we will be back.

AWSOME!!!! Everyone should experience Bristol. This was my second time there and my first to go see nationwide series......So glad I did it......Spent the weekend at a campground.....want to go back next year.....I think it might be a good idea for them to cut the prices of the tickets to get more ppl back to the track...I have never seen so many empty seats at Bristol.
