About Bristol Motor Speedway

You can tell a lot about the character of Bristol Motor Speedway from the nicknames assigned to the venue by racing fans. There are four in wide circulation: "The Last Great Colosseum" and "The Bullring" for the track's shape; "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" for its speed (cars complete laps in about 15 seconds); and "Thunder Valley" for its noise. The track is steeply banked and ringed with stadium-style seating. With a capacity of 162,000, it is the third-largest sports venue in the United States and the seventh-largest in the world.

Bristol Motor Speedway History

Bristol Motor Speedway, located in the northeast corner of Tennessee, opened in 1961. It was built by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier, and R.G. Pope on the site of a former dairy farm. They drew their inspiration from a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the $600,000 Bristol track was a more intimate (and noisier) venue, and in 1969 the track was reconfigured with its signature steep banks. In 1992, BMS replaced its asphalt surface with a concrete surface that is now its other hallmark. It is something of a celebrity, having served as the basis for the fictional Motor Speedway of the South in the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

The speedway is home to races in the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series East, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. In the Cup Series, racing great Richard Petty holds the track record for most Top 10 finishes (with 37) and most starts (with 60). Darrell Waltrip leads with 12 all-time wins. The all-time winningest car owner at BMS is the legendary Junior Johnson, with 21 victories. Over the course of a week in 2010, Kyle Busch made history by winning three NASCAR national series races in a single race meeting: the Truck Series race on a Wednesday, then the Nationwide Series race, and the Spring Cup Series race.

    Awesome event with Flaws

by Dscracing1320 on 9/6/22Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

Im really aggravated I paid for parking. No one took my parking tickets and several others parked beside me and even closer with no tickets purchased. That's ridiculous. Then the front parking lot wasn't used and because i was made to park behind the stadium my 68 year old father that can't walk well had to walk all the way around the stadium twice. And we sat in line leaving for over a hour and a half without water.

    Not bad at all

by JLWide on 5/3/22Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

Of course, since I wasn't at a NASCAR race, every gate wasn't open, and we were all limited to one grandstand, but from what I have to compare it to (Martinsville), there is no comparison. They treated you like it was a NASCAR race. They had a full crew to serve you, get you in and out of the parking lot in less than 10 minutes (unlike 2 hours at Martinsville), and plenty of concessions open. The concession prices are outrageous, but that's expected, I guess, and there was a ton of variety. Racing action was good, I didn't expect a cloud of dirt to rise up all the way into the stands, but hey, that's dirt racing.

    Additional charge for pit pass

by Rick on 5/2/22Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

At most of the World of outlaws races the pits are open when all racing is complete. This was not the case at Bristol! There was an additional charge of $10. I did not go into the pits after this race, but will go another time at another place... for free

    Dirt heaven

by Julian on 5/1/22Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

First time seeing Bristol speedway as a dirt track. Had a fun time. I wish the Ticketmaster would have let us know that it was a practice session and an actual race. I may have not purchased these tickets. But I had a good time.

    on dirt???

by nivekracing on 4/23/22Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

BMS was great (except the rain) got to park close. no traffic. lots to see. I just don't think racing on dirt for the cup series is that good. My wife and I came from Anaheim CA and personally I do not think it was worth it. Don't get me wrong I would have rather seen them on asphalt. the actual Bristol experience was great everything seem to run smoothly.

    Bristol at Easter

by David K on 4/23/22Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

We booked our tickets for the race before I realized that it was on Easter Sunday. I don’t consider myself a religious zealot or fanatic, but when I found out that the race was on Easter, my first thought was “Is nothing sacred anymore?”. However, I decided to go since we had already purchased tickets and made hotel arrangements. We got to our seats shortly after 4:00pm and I was pleasantly surprised to hear Christian music. Then a speaker presented a short message on the meaning of Easter for all of us. Additionally, past and current drivers along with owner Joe Gibbs gave a few words regarding their faith. All I can say is kudos to NASCAR for having the resolve to put on this presentation in this day and time. I was most impressed and pleased to see this display of faith on such an important day to Christianity.
