    Brendan Perry is mindblowingly angelic

by Safar on 6/16/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I'm new to Brendan Perry's music (I was a late bloomer) and from the moment I heard it I was blown away. There is such an ethereal quality to his voice that transcends this world. I was honoured to witness it live and know that it was even more incredible than the CD. I was also fortunate to chat to him after the gig. Lovely lovely guy. I'm a lifetime fan. If you haven't seen him live make sure you do!

I take a bow to Brendan Perry who was absolutely amazing, his voice is still as powerful as ever! I love him in Dead can Dance but he is still incredible on his own! Love his performance!!!

    A most perfect union

by Beellezeebug on 6/15/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Brendan Perry and Robin Guthrie make for a fantastic combination. The night's theme was consistent and overwhelmingly talented. Both Guthrie and Perry understand the value of sound and they both performed with the same perfection that is found on the recorded albums. Shy Guthrie doesn't have the same stage presence as Perry but the music he makes fills the stage and goes way beyond making up for it. So as Guthrie lulls you into melodic heaven Perry gathers the forces of nature to make the universe sing. Perry's voice is phenomenal. He blends it into the orchestra of the other instruments rather than drowning them out or falling behind. It was a powerful performance. The only draw back to the show was the audience members that seemed to think that quiet parts in songs was their cue to ruin the atmosphere by screaming 'we love you robin/brendan' or 'play ::insert random DCD song here::'. If it wasn't for the fact that they knew the names and songs, I'd have been convinced some people from a Van Halen show had gotten lost and wandered in. And frankly, it's insulting to Brendan Perry, a solo musician in his own right, to scream out names of songs from his non solo career. Don't get me wrong, I adooore Dead Can Dance and will be sure to catch any show they come around on, but this was Brendan Perry's show. Not a DCD show. Respect his music by giving him credit for his solo work as much as his band work. Besides, he was kind enough to litter the playlist with FIVE DCD songs as it was! But enough complaining.

    Perry incredible

by mozBra on 6/15/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I have to admit I could not appreciate the style and limited range of music played by Robin Guthrie before Brendan's performance. Just when I thought a piece was developing, it would end! But....I would have endured anything to see Brendan Perry perform. His voice is absolutely incredible and strikes a deep cord in me. His music seems to transport me to all sorts of places, and really speaks to my soul. Wish I had seen him during the Dead Can Dance days. I think a venue with Perry and Thievery Corporation would be one hell of a night!

    Brendan : You're highly underrated

by elxibalba on 6/15/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I have loved Brendan Perry's voice since the early days of Dead Can Dance. I've seen him live several times doing his solo work and he never ceases to amaze me. The power of his voice and the simplicity with which he exudes such power only adds to the experience. My only gripe about this show was the lack of respect shown by the audience who kept screaming at him to perform their favorite tracks. Unlike other DCD concerts I've attended where you could almost hear a pin drop in the audience, this crowd left much to be desired and made me realize that the days of amazing civility at sophisticated music concerts is over. I felt really bad for Brendan but being the gentleman he is, he only said "This is not Karaoke night!" Had it been me, I would have had those clowns removed from the venue.

Still Incredible after all these years!!!!

by Dagobert on 6/14/11El Rey - Los Angeles

I must confess my bias by saying that DCD and the Cocteau Twins are my two favorite bands. Having said that, seeing these two icons on stage was an experience I won't forget. Each performer made very clear what they brought to their respective bands by playing atmostpheric sets that transported the listener to other worlds. The show opened with Robin Guthrie who began by doing what he does best, playing atmostpheric, echoing guitar lines overlapping each other into a wash of beautiful noise. Following the first track, he was joined by a drummer and bassist. From there, he played mostly songs from his upcoming album ranging from sparse, clean instrumentals to washed-out fuzzy walls of noise. Think the Cocteau Twins sans Liz Fraser. He set the perfect tone for the night. Brendan Perry's set highlighted his musical growth in the years since DCD ended. Instead of clinging to his past in DCD, his set included mostly unreleased new songs and tunes from his recently released solo album Ark, with a couple of DCD tunes thrown in for good measure. His voice hasn't lost any of the qualities that made DCD tunes so special. In fact, I might argue that his voice has gotten stronger with age. He was in good spirits and even cracked a couple of jokes between songs. His new songs (and band) are a tad more conventional than his past work with DCD, but just as strong. I wouldn't judge his music in comparison with DCD as it is really its own work entirely. I've loved both of his solo albums so far and his new material is just as strong. New songs "Tree of Life" and "Love on the Vine" mixed in well with DCD favorites "Severance" and "In Power We Trust the Love Advocated." The highlight of my night was when Brendan was joined on stage by Guthrie for a rendition of "Song to the Siren." I never would have imagined I would get to hear that song live. My only minor disappointment was the lack of songs from his first album, Eye of the Hunter. However, I know he has tons of music to create a setlist from and it would be impossible to please everyone.

the show was very intimate. robin joined the crowd after his set and signed cds. the young lady selling the merchandise was friendly and chatted with us concert goers. she even got to enjoy watching brendan's set with us, that's how close the venue is.
