BORIS IN CONCERT:

Experimental Japanese metal trio Boris started with a bang on their lovably aggro 1996 debut album Absolutego, and theyíve been waging an all-out sonic assault on stereo speakers ever since. In two decades the band has released a whopping 23 albums, toured the world many times over, and become legendary for their face-melting live performances. In concert Boris is a tight-knit unit of sheer aural power, employing an arsenal of state-of-the-art effects pedals and coveted vintage amps to blast out a wild blend of sludge metal, noise rock, drone, ambient, shoegaze, and beyond. Their genre-devouring sound makes for an incredibly dynamic live show, and they never stay in one place for very longójust when you think theyíve settled into a groove, they defy expectations with an electrifying sonic non sequitur. Fans looking for a heavy-rocking avant-garde concert experience wonít want to miss Borisótheir hair is long, their musicianship is unassailable, and they bring a focused intensity to the stage that makes every show feel like a sacred metal ritual.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Boris formed in Tokyo in 1992 and cut their teeth in the Japanese hardcore punk scene before starting to incorporate elements of metal, noise rock, and experimental music into their ever-evolving sound. They self-released their 1996 debut album Absolutego on their label Fangs Anal Satan, and followed up with a string of appropriately titled albums like Amplifier Worship (1998), Heavy Rocks (2002), and Dronevil (2005). In 2005 they went from cult sensation to critical darlings with the release of Pink, an acclaimed album that landed on numerous year-end lists and earned them a strong international fanbase (SPIN, Blender, and Pitchfork all named it among the yearís best albums). Since then theyíve continued to impress critics while also achieving some commercial success with albums like 2011ís Attention Please, which cracked the Top 20 on Billboardís Heatseekers chart. The ever-prolific trio released three albums in 2015 alone, and they continue to blow minds every time they perform their singular brand of experimental metal in concert.

Great show. Melvins can really tear it up. Mr. Phylzzz was a great opener.

    Melvins/Boris/Mr. Phylzzz

    by P_funk05 on 9/5/23Knitting Factory - Spokane - Spokane

Totally excellent show. Huge props to the Melvins for helping Boris gain a bigger U.S. audience. What an amazing band! Worthy of all the recognition they get. Same with Mr Phylzzz. As a two man band, you really need to bring it! And they did! All the best to Dale Crover as he recovers. Coady does an amazing job filling his shoes.

    Legends

    by Amp Worshipper on 8/27/23

A legendary Japanese doom band that still played with the energy they had 30 years ago. It was an honor to catch them live. 10/10 will try to see again.

    Not impressed

    by SteveVee on 8/27/23

Never heard of the band. Ask a lot of concert goers their impressions of the band and everyone gave great reviews. Didn’t see it.

Heavy Rocks is the name after all

    by Drake on 8/27/23

Loud, Heavy, any other adjective like that is what Boris brings out. Wata is effortlessly cool and Atsuo’s stage presence is entertaining. Takeshi with his signature double neck guitar is awesome. Boris is one you shouldn’t miss.

    Outstanding!

    by Carl on 9/13/22

I last saw Boris in 2006. That was a great show, but man have they gotten even better with age! This time around they have a guest drummer, Mike Engel, freeing up Atsuo to focus on his lead vocals and showmanship, which is very entertaining. Mike is a beast on the drum kit, meshing perfectly with the band. He poured a ton of energy into this show, nearly knocking the gong over at one point, and looked totally exhausted when they finally took their bows. Songs played were mostly high energy tracks from No and Heavy Rocks 2022, interspersed with a few drone and noise segments, and one piano ballad from Wata. The crowd was very enthusiastic and responded to the fast songs with plenty of moshing and circle pits. What more can I say? Go see Boris, you will NOT leave disappointed!

    Great post-Covid Experience

by Superbee on 9/3/229:30 CLUB - Washington

The last show I went to, at the Lincoln Theater, in April, I got Covid. This show, I did not get Covid, not even a little bit. The experience was also great- smooth ingress & egress, full house but didn't feel uncomfortably crowded. My bud had a seamless experience at the Box Office, too: another plus. Most people wore masks that I saw. Great band (truly so- Boris is nothing short of EPIC & brilliant; Nothing could stand as a headliner, themselves, & the show was a full 3 hours of sonic experimentation, superlative musicianship, & awesome visuals), great merch, great venue, & best of all: no Covid.

    Once in a lifetime Experience

by Jumanji on 9/3/229:30 CLUB - Washington

Boris has been my favorite band since high school and finally seeing them was most likely a once in a lifetime opportunity. The staff at the venue was friendly and helpful and I have no complaints. If Boris ever returns I will absolutely be going back.
