Boise State Broncos Men’s Basketball History

When you think of Boise State athletics, it's likely that the blue football field is your first image. After all, the Broncos have captured the football-watching world's imagination for more than 10 years with their consistency and high-profile upsets. But Boise also is home to a burgeoning basketball program, one that may not have the brand recognition of its gridiron counterparts, but that's been a solid force for even longer.

The Boise State men’s basketball team has been a potential tournament crasher since their first March Madness appearance in 1976. Beyond the Broncos’ 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, the team has earned seven regular season conference titles and six conference tournament championships. The team is poised to join the Pac-12 Conference beginning with the 2026-27 season.

Currently led by Leon Rice in his 16th season as head coach, the Broncos have made tournament appearances in three out of the last four seasons, setting a new program record with three consecutive tournament appearances from 2022 to 2024.

Perhaps the most famous of Boise's NBA players is Chris Childs, who parlayed a successful post-college stint in the Continental Basketball Association into a solid career with the New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, and Toronto Raptors. His time with the Knicks is likely the most memorable, as he was part of the famous Knicks-Miami Heat rivalry of the late ’90s. While at Boise State, he was the team's best player, winning the Big Sky Player of the Year award in 1989.

  • Great time!

The game was great. The crowd was great. BSU vs U of I should continue the rivalry there at Idaho central arena in the future.

  • Broncos good. Idaho Centeal Arena bad.

by Bronco fan on 10/20/25Idaho Central Arena - BoiseRating: 3 out of 5

Love the men’s basketball team. Great game. Fun to watch the new team. However, Idaho Central Arena is not good. Really poor entrance process. Long lines. Not clear where the lines are. There were 4 lines but only three metal detectors. Such a slow process. Definitely not a basketball arena. Some really bad seats there. Oh well.

  • Seating chart was wack

    by jl5603 on 10/20/25Idaho Central Arena - BoiseRating: 3 out of 5

The seating map was not clearly marked on the website. Though I was sitting in a section dedicated to my team, there were several people supporting the opposing team seated in the same section that were trying to pick a fight. We could not see the game well. I received far too many emails about one game.

  • Great game, uncomfortable seats

by Tom on 12/21/24Mountain America Center - Idaho FallsRating: 3 out of 5

We really enjoyed the game, very entertaining. The seats at the venue are way too tightly spaced, and very uncomfortable. I would think the concessions suffer, as it is almost impossible to eat or drink in your seat

  • Great game

by Melisa M on 12/17/24Mountain America Center - Idaho FallsRating: 5 out of 5

Our group all had a great time at the game. It was so fun to see the BSU game in our area and it was a fun game to watch. St Mary's played great which made it an intense game. It was so awesome that they went into overtime as well! Mountain America Center is a really nice place and all the staff that we came into contact with were very helpful. We hope they will host the Boise State basketball game again in the future. We will definitely be there!

  • Terrible view

by cmckayboi on 12/10/24Idaho Central Arena - BoiseRating: 1 out of 5

This was an absolute horrible experience! We were seated in Section 119 Row A right behind the people who were seated in folding chairs behind the basket. We could not see anything from our seats. We had to watch most of the game on the video board. We might as well have stayed home and watched the game on CBS and saved a lot of money.

  • Great Afternoon!

by Doerr Family on 12/10/24Idaho Central Arena - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

The Doerr family attended the Capital City Classic game between BSU Broncos and WSU Cougars. It was a treat to be inside the arena and experience that unique atmosphere. BSU did not play their best - but the crowd certainly helped them rally in the 4th quarter. We enjoyed the chicken Cesar wrap and the kettle corn. FYI - some of the seats are wobbly and nearly broken. We were able to move around and find 4 together that were all in fine working order.

  • Absolutely horrible seats!

by JB on 12/10/24Idaho Central Arena - BoiseRating: 1 out of 5

Bought six floor seats and could not see a thing. Had to move to actually watch the game and see what was happening. Missed most of the game. Completely unhappy

  • Disappointed

by The Imp on 12/10/24Idaho Central Arena - BoiseRating: 2 out of 5

Would have thought the entry in to the arena wouldn't have been so cumbersome after all these years. Lines that did not seem to make sense. Than, the base line floor seating was worthless could not see a thing. Not a good basketball venue.

  • Not good!

by Ray on 12/10/24Idaho Central Arena - BoiseRating: 3 out of 5

Seats were not very good in Boise Center Arena. Team looked very bad and we left at half,
