Boise State Broncos Football History

The Boise State Broncos football team was first fielded in 1933 as a junior college squad and joined the NCAA in 1970. The Broncos have claimed two national championships: in 1958 as members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and in 1980 as part of the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Starting in the Big Sky Conference from 1970 to 1995, the Broncos jumped to Division I ball with the Big West Conference between 1996 and 2000, followed by the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) until 2011 and the Mountain West Conference through 2025. In 2026, the Broncos will take part in a major conference realignment by joining the Pac-12 Conference.

Across conferences, the Broncos have won 22 conference championships along with six Mountain West Division titles. At the conclusion of the 2024 season, the Broncos held the longest active streak of winning seasons with 27. The consistent run of excellence comes with .727 all-time winning percentage and 13 bowl game wins, including a memorable 2007 Fiesta Bowl victory to cap an undefeated 13-0 season.

Notable former players include Kellen Moore, the FBS leader in all-time wins by a quarterback, and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Dave “The Intimidator” Wilcox. During his tenure between 2006 and 2013, head coach Chris Petersen notched a program-best 92 wins and garnered two Paul "Bear" Bryant Awards, in 2006 and 2009.

Boise State Broncos Football at Albertsons Stadium

Albertsons Stadium boasts a home turf so unique, it holds its own U.S. trademark. Boise State’s distinctive blue AstroTurf was installed as college football’s first non-green field in 1986. It was replaced by blue FieldTurf in 2008 and warranted a federal trademark by 2011. Otherwise known as “The Blue” or “Smurf Turf,” the field has now become one of college football’s most well-known traditions. Formerly Bronco Stadium until 2014, Albertsons Stadium offers a home game advantage to Boise State proven by several consecutive undefeated seasons at home. After expansions in 1975, 1997, 2009 and 2012, the current capacity at Albertsons Stadium is 36,360.

  • Amazing Atmosphere!

by Bronco on 11/24/23Rating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been to a ton of CFB games, but nothing matches the passion and energy of Albertson’s Stadium. Boise state fans are welcoming and LOUD! Can’t wait to make it back for a game.

  • Comeback of the Century

by TJB on 10/10/23Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

Man what a game. On top of the joy of seeing blitz as well as the heartwarming activates during break, this was the best game I could have gone to. The crowd was electric even when we were down, and when we game back the excitement was palpable. Great experience all around.

  • Fantastic fan experience!

    by David L on 9/18/23Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

As a Canadian, this was my first U.S. College Football game! What an experience! From outside the stadium to the pre-game ceremonies, halftime and the game itself, Boise State put on a show. Even more surprising, fans of the opposing side were treated with friendliness and respect. Stadium was clean and seating was relatively comfortable. Seat pads are available to rent but I didn’t need one. Food options were varied and reasonably priced. There is free parking on weekends only in the neighborhood to the south but stalls were few and far between. I found parking but did arrive an hour before the game. As a tourist unfamiliar with the area, was unsure about other parking options. Overall an awesome experience! Would certainly watch a game there again!

  • Fun game! Way too cold!

by Steph on 11/23/21Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 4 out of 5

The game was such a fun time for me and my friends. But we were slightly cold even though we dressed pretty warm for the occasion. It would be nice if you guys installed heaters or something. Just a thought. Overall it was a great time!

  • Great experience

Idaho friendly: the best! Excellent view, polite and hospitable surroundings, easy entrance and exit.

  • Great football and stadium - Concessions needs A LOT of help

    by Heather H on 10/5/21Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 3 out of 5

Easy/Quick access into the stadium. Seats were great, we enjoyed the overall stadium and game. We received an email ahead of time that concessions are an issue and we could pre purchase vouchers or use the mobile app to order and reduce wait times. The lines were terrible. I did use the mobile app, but could only order sodas/chips/candy/fries, which is not what we wanted to order. We ended up leaving the game early to go eat outside the stadium which is unfortunate because I did want to stay until the end and get the full value of our tickets purchased.

  • First College football game

    by sonRicky1 on 10/3/21Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 4 out of 5

It was cool, it was packed, there was people everywhere doing something, chillin, drinking, eating, being merry, showing school spirit or their favorite city football team. The vibe was friendly, people were kind, they were giving out free stuff claiming you had to win it. If you've never been to a college football game I suggest you try it. Even by yourself, it matters not, there's so much people there you'll be surrounded by people.

  • Not a better experience ever.

by Broken-hearted Bronco fan on 9/23/21Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 4 out of 5

There is nothing like the energy of all the Bronco fans cheering on their team. Like my 9 year old said “It’s so hype”. I just wish the Broncos would have came out to play in the second half and could find someone better to run the ball than George Holani. He isn’t a good football player.

  • OSU vs Boise State

by Randy on 9/21/21Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

Purchase and download of tickets went very smooth.

  • My wife loved the seats.

    by A. N. on 11/19/19Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

The Boise State game was fantastic. Loved every cold minute of it.

  • Atmosphere nailed

by AnytimeBronco on 10/22/18Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 3 out of 5

Bronco fans are amazing and the atmosphere at the game is infectious. The ONLY reason for 3 stars is that our team is too good for the other teams. We outplay them every time and by halftime the game is over.

  • BSU VS UNLV

by NVJohn on 11/21/16Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 3 out of 5

OK game. Officiating not very good. As is the case with all BSU games previously attended, this one was way too long....due to numerous lengthy pauses....due to TV commercial breaks. Guess there's no work-around for that. Inside the stadium, the commercialism is surreal; a reality to which I've learned to ignore. MAV Events presence??....annoying & overbearing! Too many yellow jackets with power going to their heads and paying customers being treated like cattle. MAV has the look of a jobs program which makes tickets more expensive than they should be and adding cost to the conduct of the game thus forcing MORE commercialism. Totally understand the need for security but have to believe there's a better more customer-friendly approach. Finally, what does it take to get on the Blue for a picture of my BSU student & me?

  • Not Much of a Game

by UtahMusicLover on 9/21/15Albertsons Stadium - BoiseRating: 4 out of 5

The only reason we had tickets was I was visiting family in the area. We knew in advance it wouldn't be very competitive. It amazes me how pricey tickets are for college football. Other than that it was a good experience and we all got to do something together.
