About

Combining nu-metal, rap-metal and regional folk music, Indian heavy-metal outfit Bloodywood originally started out as a parody project in 2016 but quickly evolved into the real deal. Today, they are a beloved hard-rock act that is heavily involved in social work and charitable causes around mental-health awareness and animal welfare.

Formed in New Delhi by co-founder and multi-instrumentalist Karan Katiyar, Bloodywood also features vocalist Jayant Bhadula and rapper Raoul Kerr. It started out with Katiyar (a former corporate lawyer) and Bhadula (a talent manager) as a two-piece band with the intention of "destroying pop songs."

Bloodywood's first cover came in 2017 when the band re-recorded an immensely popular version of Linkin Park's "Heavy," which they followed with the 2017 compilation covers album Anti-Pop Vol. 1 featuring updated renditions of songs by Backstreet Boys, 50 Cent, Ariana Grande, and Nirvana, and was released on Bandcamp. The band also shared a metal cover version of the Bhangra/Indi-pop song "Tunak Tunak Tun" by Daler Mehndi, featuring guest vocals from Bonde do Metaleiro.

In 2018, Bloodywood released a cover of "Ari Ari" by the Bombay Rockers, which adapts an earlier version of the Indian folk song "Bars Barsi." The first song featuring vocals from Kerr,  "Ari Ari'' became a streaming sensation, thanks in part to Bollywood actress Ileana D'Cruz sharing the track on social media.

The overall success of "Ari Ari" inspired Bloodywood to start writing original material, which they did in 2018 starting with the song "Jee Veerey." Bloodywood wrote "Jee Veerey" -- a song about fighting depression -- in partnership with the online counseling site HopeTherapy. The following January, the two released "Endurant," a song that dealt with the subject of bullying.

In spring 2019, Bloodywood embarked on their Raj Against the Machine Tour and performed at German hard-rock festival Wacken Open Air. Kerr was also invited to be a full-time member of Bloodywood in 2019. Two years later, Metal Hammer named Bloodywood as one of the "12 New Metal Bands To Watch In 2022."

In February 2022, Bloodywood released their debut studio album, Rakshak, which charted on Billboard (making Bloodywood the first Indian metal band to achieve this) and featured lyrics sung in English, Hindi and Punjabi. The lead single "Gaddaar" came out in November 2021 and featured political musings around the separation of church and state. The single "Aaj" dropped in January 2022 with a video shot in Munnar, Kerala.

Translating to "protector," Rakshak is about "a joint effort to protect people and the planet as a whole from all the challenges we're facing," according to Kerr in an interview with Metalutopia. "We hope to do this by eliminating the challenges altogether, because the best defense is a great offense. You'll hear messages about divisive politics, corruption, toxic news, sexual assault and bullying, as well as personal ones about battling depression and pushing your limits."

    The Best Live Band

by Bixler on 5/25/23Irving Plaza - New York

I have been going to shows for over 30 years. I said this last year after seeing them in October, they are the best live band touring today and are among the best ever, and they confirmed it again in NYC Monday. Their energy, their connection to the crowd, their performance, their passion, everything is top notch. There is no band touring today that can come close to them.

    Amazing Time!

by Cactus on 5/25/23Irving Plaza - New York

WargasmUK opened up with so much energy they got the crowd so excited, same with Vended, then Bloodywood took their set time to not only put on an amazing show but to spread messages to support your fellow people, they were inclusive and kind and honestly some of the best artists I've ever seen live

    Excellent

by Aphrodytee on 5/11/23The Observatory - Santa Ana

The band was even better than the previous year. Meet & greet was cool. Venue was clean and perfect. Bartenders were great & accommodating . Food was great. Only thing was there was a miscommunication on the meet & greet time, concert start and time of doors opening (an hour late.) Which would have been better to have been communicated to everyone. We stood a LONG time waiting with no bathroom or ability to buy drinks. There was also no one there to assist with parking and we were not sure which lot to park at because we paid for premiere but only preferred and vip were available…? Confusing. But we really love this venue and almost everything about it!

    Waited 5 Years For This

by Rue on 5/11/23The Observatory - Santa Ana

I have been waiting and hoping to see Bloodywood live since I found them in 2018. Their live show was everything I hoped and more. So far this year, I’ve been to around 20 shows and Bloodywood was hands down the most powerful show. The mix was fantastic (shout out to their audio engineer), the stage presence was insane and it translated into the most engaged audience I’ve ever seen at any show. It’s so wild to hear them start each song with some positive and uplifting little message…then just unleash a face melting guitar riff or beat. I will pay any amount to see them any time they come back through for the rest of time.

    Intensity you could FEEL!

by Mr Wicked on 10/10/22Marquis Theater - Denver

This show was intense! From the moment the opening band hit the stage to the very end. The first band, local boys from Greily I believe, we’re a good warm up. Thrashy rhythms, super growling vocals, and a bare bones basic set appearance. Not great but not bad. Needs something to really make them stand out. Second was A killer’s confession. Stage presence, crowd command, shouting lyrics and impeccable harmonies. Awesome show! Bloddywood hit the stage like a Tsunami! Not only could you hear the intensity, you could FEEL it! Traditional Hindi lyrics and melodies combined with thrash guitar, double bass pedal, and vocals delivered in growling screams! Such a fantastic show!

    BLOODYWOOD IS THE GREATEST

by Chaosss on 10/9/22Marquis Theater - Denver

One of the best damn shows I've ever been to. Not only were all of the bands fabulous (I will say the first band was a little off genre in my opinion) but the lines were decent for everything including merch and drinks, and the sound was great! My favorite part was that Bloodywood setup a table to meet everyone after the show 💓

    Bleeping AMAZING

by Chandini on 10/4/22Gramercy Theatre - New York

This band is every Desi metal fan dream. They are so good live, so interactive. They came into the crowd and performed. This was also my 9 years old son forat concert and he had the time of his life. Bloodywood not only bridged the gap between Desis and Metal fans, but got my son interested in his Indian half.

    BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!!!!

by Ycruz on 10/4/22Gramercy Theatre - New York

This was the best performance that I have ever been in years. The band was on point even without Raoul (wishing you fast recovery). They were so humble and was not hesitate to be with their fans. The band actually went in the crowd. I am looking forward to their next NYC performance. 🤘🤘🤘🤘

    A fantastic band

by Blake on 10/2/22Baltimore Soundstage - Baltimore

This concert was such a surprisingly great experience. While a young band out of India, they have established a unique sound, a distinct philosophy, and their performance showed maturity well beyond what is expected of such a young band. They had great stage presence, command of the audience, and were able to rock the ever-loving-socks off of the Baltimore Soundstage. It was a fantastic time, and I look forward to when Bloodywood makes a return to the area.

by Will on 10/2/22Baltimore Soundstage - Baltimore

This was by far one of the best live shows I’ve attended! Even with Raoul being sick and not with the band, it was a spectacular show! I can’t wait to see them again!!!

    Awesome Show

by KateQ on 10/2/22Baltimore Soundstage - Baltimore

Even though one of the lead singers was off sick, the rest of the band amped their energy up to 11. Crowd was awesome, band was awesome. Can’t wait for them to come back on tour again!
