About

Blood, Sweat & Tears on Tour

Though they haven't released a new studio album since 1980, Blood, Sweat & Tears have never left the road. And although their current lineup features none of the players who appeared on their string of hit singles from their late-'60s/early-'70s commercial peak, their original mission — to fuse the compositional complexity of jazz with the power and precision of rock ‘n' roll — has carried on under the guidance of founding drummer Bobby Colomby, who no longer performs with the group but still serves as their de facto spiritual advisor/casting director. Over the years, Colomby has enlisted a number of singers — including American Idol alumnus Bo Bice — to fill the big shoes vacated by BST's most famous vocalist, David Clayton-Thomas. Since 2019, that role has been occupied by Keith Paluso, a former contestant on The Voice. But no matter who's belting out the hits, a Blood, Sweat & Tears show is guaranteed to be a brasstastic experience.

Blood, Sweat & Tears in Concert

Al Kooper could've retired in 1965 already a legend at age 21, thanks to his iconic keyboard work on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." But the restless musician would go on to play a crucial role in expanding the parameters of popular music when he joined improvisational New York group The Blues Project, before founding the even more ambitious Blood, Sweat & Tears with guitarist Steve Katz in 1967. The group's debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, was a groundbreaking fusion of rock, jazz, psychedelia and orchestral music, though creative differences would drive Kooper out of the band shortly after its release, with Katz and drummer Bobby Colomby seeking to push the group into a more accessible direction. They'd find their golden ticket into the Top 40 in the form of Canadian singer David Clayton-Thomas, a charismatic, big-voiced showman who contributed the signature single "Spinning Wheel" to the band's 1969 Grammy Award–winning self-titled album and led the group at their historic Woodstock performance that summer. Over the next few years, Blood, Sweat & Tears stood at the forefront of a jazz-rock revolution that counted Chicago and Santana as compatriots, showcasing their bold, brassy sound on swaggering originals like "Lucretia Mac Evil" and inventive covers (like their soulful rendition of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho"). Clayton-Thomas left the band in 1972 to pursue a solo career (only to return in 1975), and since the release of 1980's Nuclear Blues, Blood, Sweat & Tears have existed primarily as a live act, with an infinite array of revolving lineups — in fact, no fewer than 175 players have passed through their ranks over the years. But under Colomby's direction, Blood, Sweat & Tears have survived and thrived into the 21st century with their big-band bonhomie intact.

    Old School Music Memories

by bkborn on 3/28/10Berks Jazz Fest - Reading

For all the "Ole Head - Old School" music lovers this was a show to see. It brought back memories of the music and times of the late 60's and early 70's. (My teen years). It even took my husband back to the music during his time in Viet Nam. It was truly an enjoyable show. Even though several members of the group are not originals, the sound was very original.

The auditorium and volunteers were great. The band was really good (maybe a little loud for the size of the auditorium). Music was super - played well, sounded very authentic. Having one of the "founding fathers" giving a little history throughout the show was a good touch. The solos were great. The crowd was into the show. We had a good time and would consider going to other shows at next year's Jazz-Fest!

This was our first trip out to Reading for the Jazzfest. It will certainly not be our last. Concert was wonderful, lead singer's voice was powerful. A combination of instrumentals and vocals. Loved it.

Blood Sweat and Tears was awesome!

by BSTFAN on 3/28/10Berks Jazz Fest - Reading

First, the concert was not what I expected. Being a product of the 60's, I was expecting to hear last night what I heard back then. I was a bit disappointed in that respect. The group has established a much more contemporary, jazz-focused style. Even the BS&T standards sounded different - more updated. Every musician in the group was over-the-top talented, and I would recommend this concert to any jazz fan. Adjust your expectations, though, and keep an open mind.

    SHOW WAS AWESOME !!

by ERCproductions on 3/28/10Berks Jazz Fest - Reading

Blood, Sweat and Tears provided an absolutely fantastic show; solo performances by each member of the band was superb; the saxophone player and the bass guitarist brought the house down with their solo performances. DEFINITELY HOPE THEY RETURN IN THE FUTURE. I am a promoter of high quality entertainment shows, and would be honored to present them anytime, anywhere. Thank you for such an outstanding evening to ALL OF YOU from BLOOD SWEAT and TEARS.

Blood, Sweat & Tears is phenomenal!

by CraigS on 3/28/10Berks Jazz Fest - Reading

Steve Katz is only original member, providing historical anecdotes as well as blowing some pretty good harp and vocals. Room for players to stretch in BS&T favorites and a few covers providing a wide range of material. If you get the chance, check them out. Show was 2 hours nonstop.

Blood Sweat & Tears....one of the best!!!!!!!!

by Natasha88 on 10/19/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

This concert was one of the best I have EVER attended in my lifetime!!! The performances were top notch......the camaraderie, respect and support among the members was heart-warming......... The sound quality was amazing but not so loud that it was painful as most concerts are. They were very much in the now but at the same time it was the closest one could ever come to time travel.... Living proof talent is ageless and timeless.........in fact "you're not getting older you're getting better" definitely applies here! Hooray for BS&T!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BS&T - excellent, rocking show!

by eranbe on 10/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

The show was excellent! We had great seats in the middle, row V, with a good view of the stage. The songs were well played and sung, and the additional commentary by Steve Katz added a lot of value to this performance. We were probably the youngest people on the venue, though, besides the ushers... :)

Blood Sweat & Tears = Fabulous Performance

by LeAannFan on 10/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

The Blood Sweat & Tears show was Fabulous. If you close your eyes you will think that you are back in 1969 and the seventies when they were the #1 song on the radio. The sounds are amazing as are the vocals and harmonica and other solo riffs. Don't miss this show if you get a chancce to see and hear it.

    B,S&T...GREAT!!!

by JackandLinda on 10/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Blood, Sweat and Tears performance at the Berklee Performance Center last night (October 15) was nothing less than spectacular. The sound matched the original sound of the late 60s and early 70s. California sound. Everyone on stage is a talented musician in their own right. The enduring music that you remember listenting to on your old AM radio lives on for yet another generation.
