About

Legendary New York-bred singer-songwriter Billy Joel has toured only sporadically in recent years, but fans have plenty of opportunities to score tickets to see him in concert going forward -- if they're willing to head out to New York's Madison Square Garden. Joel signed an open-ended deal with MSG that will have him playing a concert at the venue once per month for as long as there's demand. And demand has never been a problem for Joel at he historic New York venue; he played his first show there in 1978, and had logged 46 concerts at the arena by 2013.
New York isn't alone in its love for the singer. Joel has long been established as one of the top-grossing touring artists in the U.S., and has sold more than 150 million records over the course his four-decade career. After recording a long string of hits including "Piano Man," "New York State of Mind," "Just the Way You Are," "You May Be Right," "Pressure," "Uptown Girl," "We Didn't Start the Fire," and  "The River of Dreams," Joel decided that he was done writing pop and rock songs. It's a decision he's stuck with; it's been more than 20 years since he's recorded a new pop or rock album. He's composed new classical material instead, while continuing to play songs from his catalog in concert.

    A Special Birthday Night

by the Stranger on 5/12/24Madison Square Garden - New York

A highly anticipated event is a risky thing. It could easily be a decent happening but expectations are so high that it could disappoint. Kind of like prom night. This was most decidedly NOT the case with Billy Joel's May 9th concert. Of course he's great. We've seen him before and he always puts on a great performance. But this night was special for a number of reasons. He's nearing the end of his record setting run of sold out shows. It was Madison Square freaking Garden. Add to all that it was His Birthday. But to top it off, it was also my wife's birthday, and this was the centerpiece of our special trip to New York. A Bucket List moment. And it was Wonderful. We saw his TV special and while it was good, it did not capture the excitement and energy of this show. Nothing like live music performed at a high level. The only disappointment was that his catalogue of songs is so extensive that a two hour plus show is bound to leave out anticipated songs. (No Uptown Girl?.... are you kidding?) He could have played for 4 hours. A serious contender for Most Memorable Concert ever for these two fans. Great Venue, Great Artist, Great Presentation, Great Time. Multiple Stars.

Excellent show and wonderful performance by Billy Joel. Also, thumbs up to the terrific staff at the Garden. Every employee we met was very helpful in helping us navigate our way in, find our seats and help us find our way out through the correct exit.

Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden

by PaulH on 5/12/24Madison Square Garden - New York

A bucket list visit for me - I’m from Liverpool UK and seen him 4 times now but this was extra special being MSG and his 75th birthday as well! Had fingers crossed he would play my 2 favourite songs and he did! All for Lena and Everybody loves you now. Great atmosphere singing 🎵 Happy Birthday from the start and all his classics what a set list. Thank you Piano Man, take it easy after your historic residency….well deserved Billy but I guess ‘it’s hard to keep a good man down’

    Bucket List Moment

by Jeremy S on 5/12/24Madison Square Garden - New York

Loved every moment of Billy Joel, every song a part of the soundtrack of my life. Only downside to the joy of the concert is with such a catalog of songs to choose from even if he played all night you would still go away wishing for another song. MSG was a great venue with beautiful acoustics, so every song was clear and not distorted like some venues can be.

    Fabulous show!

by Chris on 5/12/24Madison Square Garden - New York

I saw Billy Joel in his 148th appearance at Madison Square Garden. At 75, he still pours his heart into his show! He shares anecdotes like you are sitting in his living room..... Billy sounded fabulous and the super talented band backed him with precision.... Crystal Taliefero and Mike DelGuidice lent their vocal prowess as well Totally recommend seeing him to anybody thinking about it ...

    Excellent Piano Man!

by Marsha N on 5/12/24Madison Square Garden - New York

Billy still has it, in spades, at age 75! Everyone is advised to go catch him in the last bit of a 10 year residency at MSG. He ends the monthly run as of July 2024, all of it sold out even. That tells u something about his rock icon status. Whether he does the concert w his band or brings in special guests, either way, it's just a great night out! I saw him on his birthday, 5/9/24, and the show ran 2 hrs 20 minutes long. My friends have all gotten trips to see him w me now, well those of them that r fans anyway, and all have had a fantastic time there. U can't beat Billy in concert! He can still hit the high notes too. I take him just the way he is, now & 4ever!

    Totally Awesome

by NJ Rox on 5/12/24Madison Square Garden - New York

The total experience of the concert was a great memory maker. Madison Square Garden was easy to navigate and the staff was both friendly and helpful. The venue itself was clean and up-to-date in the food areas and bathrooms. The seating was comfortable. As for the concert, it was awesome! I had never seen Billy Joel in concert and it was a great show. The rotation of the piano gave everyone a chance to watch him play and connect with him as a performer. His manner was easy and he had a sense of gratefulness for the continued opportunity to entertain and share his music. Not only was it fun to hear Billy Joel, it was fun to watch and listen to the band. Many members played multiple instruments which was fun too. I would go again!!!!

    Simply the Best!

by Alan H. on 5/12/24Madison Square Garden - New York

Best concert I’ve ever been to. At 75, Billy Joel is still performing at the highest level with tons of energy. He added a lot of personal commentary before each song, making it extra special.

    Excellent experience at MSG

by LarryP on 5/12/24Madison Square Garden - New York

Show was super on Billy's 75th birthday! Of course, you will never hear every song you want to hear as the songbook is way way too big. But every song was familiar with lots of folks singing along but not too loud that it became obnoxious. Some people stand too much blocking the view. Our seats in the 100's were excellent with a great view regardless of the piano rotation Billy does to make sure everybody gets a view during the show. Band looked like they were having fun and probably doing it just once a month helps that feeling. The volume was not crazy loud either. As for the Garden, they had a concession special half-off 7-7:30 that couldn't be beat. Great selection of types of food to get and after the discount, you couldn't eat cheaper outside the arena. Concessions were right by our section making it even easier. Very easy entry but get there early to avoid waiting a while and to make sure to take advantage of the food/drink special (not good on alcohol btw). My first Billy Joel concert despite listening to his music since early seventies.
