That face, that name, that sneer. Rock icon BILLY IDOL, known for a plethora of hit singles including “Rebel Yell,” “White Wedding,” “Dancing With Myself” “Eyes Without A Face” and many more, returns this summer to perform at The Outer Fields, Western Springs on Sunday, January 19.
Sharing the stage for an epic Sunday afternoon and evening of live music are seminal New Zealand artists Stellar* and Elemeno P.
Artisanal beers, wines and great food, as well as fun attractions, will add to the festival ambience of the day. The event is GA/All ages so bring the family and settle in for a late Summer’s Sunday of great entertainment.
An early architect of punk rock's sound, style, and fury, Billy Idol remains to this day a true rock 'n' roll icon. From punk pioneer to global superstar, Billy Idol has left an indelible mark in popular music and remained a household name for over three decades. His style, music, and attitude have transcended time and trend. Born in 1955 in Stanmore, North London, Idol spent several formative years living on Long Island, NY as a child before returning to the UK and emerging as a central figure of the British punk movement. As part of the infamous Bromley Contingent and a fan of the Sex Pistols, Idol was inspired to front the pioneering British punk band Generation X from 1976 until the band’s split in 1981. Determined to break through in America, Billy Idol hooked up with guitar genius Steve Stevens and a crucial musical partnership was forged.
Idol’s lip-curling sneer and fist-pumping persona vaulted him into the mainstream as one of MTV’s first megastars, making him one of the most recognisable faces in pop music, while selling out arenas everywhere he played. He has sold 40 million albums while scoring numerous platinum albums worldwide, nine top forty singles in the US and 10 in the UK. Hit singles include ‘Dancing With Myself’, ‘Hot In The City’, ‘Eyes Without A Face’, ‘Rebel Yell’, ‘Mony Mony’, and arguably Idol’s most famed song ‘White Wedding’.
Legendary four-piece band Stellar*, fronted by the dynamic singer/songwriter/guitarist Boh Runga, are Sony New Zealand’s highest selling Kiwi band. Dominating the airwaves and charts throughout the early 2000’s Stellar* boast three Top 10 albums, 9 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards and a legion of fans throughout the country.
Known for their pulsating live performances, Stellar* return in 2020 to perform a series of special shows to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of their 5 star debut album MIX. That album sold 80,000 copies (5 x Platinum) and generated five top 20 singles – ‘Part Of Me’, ‘Violent’, ‘Undone’, ‘Every Girl’ and ‘What You Do (Bastard)’ – all massive radio singles and indelibly etched in the Kiwi music landscape. Expect a dynamic set featuring MIX in full, more hits, plus their killer version of Sharon O’Neill’s ‘Maxine’ – which took the 2017 Vodafone NZ Music Awards by storm.
In the early 2000’s Elemeno P erupted onto the New Zealand rock scene, seemingly from out of nowhere. A four-piece with straight-arrow, energetic, power-pop anthems. A succession of massive hits such as ‘Verona’, ‘Every Day’s A Saturday’, ‘Fast Times in Tahoe’ and ’11.57’ followed.
Equipped with a fun-loving attitude, Elemeno P soon became household favourites across the nation, releasing a trifecta of top tier albums in the space of six years.
The band’s debut album ‘Love & Disrespect’ was released in 2003, reaching number #1 on the New Zealand album charts and went on to sell triple platinum. Two more albums would follow, selling Platinum and Gold respectively and leading to the band taking home Best Group at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2008. Elemeno P make a welcome return to the stage in January 2020.

The meet and greet event was very poorly organized and consisted of standing in line to enter at the regular VIP entrance, despite a message sent that directed us to a "Artist VIP entrance"at 5 pm. At 5 pm we were checked in with our names being verified on a paper list. After this we were herded a few feet away to stand in front of the toilets until 6:00 or so. There was water available but refreshment kiosks did not open until 6:15. At 6 pm, we were again herded into the event venue to stand for another 45 minutes or so. We stood in front of a bar with food and drinks but only box seat or season ticket holders were allowed in. There were four tables out of 40+ occupied while we waited in the heat. The meet and greet in person was good, and Billy Idol was very personable. The only bar in the venue we were allowed access to was a long hike from where our seats were, the kiosks only sold beer, soft drinks, and malt beverages. Parking after the concert was a crazy free-for-all! Staff at the event were not very well briefed on the process, but were very good about trying to find out information. They informed us that each tour sets its own "VIP"guidelines. Only VIP experience I have done that involved standing two hours in outdoor conditions - although the amphitheatre has a VIP lounge, it was not open for the event.
The venue is great the shows are great. however the prices are not. $7 for water. It's an outdoor venue! Water should never cost this much. Water and soda should not cost more than beer. They have a $5 beer.
Joan Jett and Billy Idol didn't disappoint on entertaining the crowd. Billy Idol was really down to earth and gave a fantastic show!
Concert was great I had great view of the event , good staff, driving to and from wish there was more ways to get in and out of the event , wish the food and beer and drinks prices were lower
Epic experience to see Billy Idol and Joan Jett who are icons from my world! Steve Steven’s was amazing too! It was a beautiful full moon night to celebrate this evening outdoor event!
High Volume level of speakers distorted the sound. Billy Idol and Joan Jett can still rock on in their 60s and 70s
We really loved the Billy Idol concert. Great venue, we were lucky with parking, no long lines to get in. We had tickets for the lawn. Too bad you can’t bring your own chairs, especially given the fact that they watered the grass earlier that day and the ground was so wet, that our blanked was soaked and we (and everybody else) had wet butts. Billy was great, sure, he is 69 and is not racing over the stage anymore, but he played all his big hits, besides ‘Speed’, what my wife regretted. One thing was a bit unfortunate, we would have hoped to get a couple of encores. But there was nothing. ‘White Wedding’ was set up as the “looks like Encore” but that was of course a must and in the set list planned anyway.
Awesome concert and the staff at the venue were great. They explained things better than the online purchase of the tickets. They really need to explain better then ttpe of ticket you are purchasing online so you could make better decisions.
Great show, great energy, but a few remarks. Why is the volume lower for the opening act? Joan Jett has tremendous energy and great songs, they need to be as loud as Billy Idol's. Billy's voice is getting tired, but that's ok, his energy is tremendous. Huge crowd, you could feel the excitement.
Billy Idol still brings the heat! It was a phenomenal concert, the talent was astounding, the bands did a wonderful job, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were a dream opening act.
It’s been a while since we’ve been to pine knob. What a stunning venue. The staff were amazing. We sat on the top of the hill for the first time in a long time and it was stunning to see everything! Billy and Joan sounded amazing! Great time!
Absolutely perfect. He will forever be a rock legend
It was perfect. Every song I needed to hear and more. Aside from from the music, the Steve Stevens solos and Billy giving every single one of his People a spot in the Sun was amazing.
I’ve been to a few Idol concerts and this has to be the best. Jett’s opening gig was a great beginning to an Idol finish. Great job all!!!
Billy Idol sounded great, looked great! Great vibe on stage, very entertaining. Joan Jett was great as well! Keep rockin Billy and Joan!!!
Joan Jett opened the show. She had a great set. She still sounds great and can still play well. Manager Kenny was on keys was great to see him. Billy is still a great front man. Sounded great and was moving on stage supporting this crew on the stage. Steve Steven’s is just amazing on guitar. Backing singers are amazing. Bass, drums had the amazing beat going. Ozzy’s buddy on guitar was great as well. Great mix of hits and new songs. These two are still my favorite from early 80’s when I was glued to MTV! ( when they played videos) Worth going to this show for sure!
Joan Jett & Billy Idol got down...and we got down with them!
Billy Idol Rocked! The sound was amazing! Fantastic screen graphics. Excellent sight lines. Lines for drinks were quick and easy. Bathroom line moved quickly. Also easy to get in through security. Easy out - although next time I will take the ramp and not the stairs. Slight bottle neck. Friendly crowd. Appreciated the quick tear down from Joan Jett to Billy - not a long wait.
This concert was so good and the price was great. Joan Jett was still rocking it. Billy Idol sounded amazing and put on a great show. It's a must see!
