That face, that name, that sneer. Rock icon BILLY IDOL, known for a plethora of hit singles including “Rebel Yell,” “White Wedding,” “Dancing With Myself” “Eyes Without A Face” and many more, returns this summer to perform at The Outer Fields, Western Springs on Sunday, January 19.
Sharing the stage for an epic Sunday afternoon and evening of live music are seminal New Zealand artists Stellar* and Elemeno P.
Artisanal beers, wines and great food, as well as fun attractions, will add to the festival ambience of the day. The event is GA/All ages so bring the family and settle in for a late Summer’s Sunday of great entertainment.
An early architect of punk rock's sound, style, and fury, Billy Idol remains to this day a true rock 'n' roll icon. From punk pioneer to global superstar, Billy Idol has left an indelible mark in popular music and remained a household name for over three decades. His style, music, and attitude have transcended time and trend. Born in 1955 in Stanmore, North London, Idol spent several formative years living on Long Island, NY as a child before returning to the UK and emerging as a central figure of the British punk movement. As part of the infamous Bromley Contingent and a fan of the Sex Pistols, Idol was inspired to front the pioneering British punk band Generation X from 1976 until the band’s split in 1981. Determined to break through in America, Billy Idol hooked up with guitar genius Steve Stevens and a crucial musical partnership was forged.
Idol’s lip-curling sneer and fist-pumping persona vaulted him into the mainstream as one of MTV’s first megastars, making him one of the most recognisable faces in pop music, while selling out arenas everywhere he played. He has sold 40 million albums while scoring numerous platinum albums worldwide, nine top forty singles in the US and 10 in the UK. Hit singles include ‘Dancing With Myself’, ‘Hot In The City’, ‘Eyes Without A Face’, ‘Rebel Yell’, ‘Mony Mony’, and arguably Idol’s most famed song ‘White Wedding’.
Legendary four-piece band Stellar*, fronted by the dynamic singer/songwriter/guitarist Boh Runga, are Sony New Zealand’s highest selling Kiwi band. Dominating the airwaves and charts throughout the early 2000’s Stellar* boast three Top 10 albums, 9 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards and a legion of fans throughout the country.
Known for their pulsating live performances, Stellar* return in 2020 to perform a series of special shows to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of their 5 star debut album MIX. That album sold 80,000 copies (5 x Platinum) and generated five top 20 singles – ‘Part Of Me’, ‘Violent’, ‘Undone’, ‘Every Girl’ and ‘What You Do (Bastard)’ – all massive radio singles and indelibly etched in the Kiwi music landscape. Expect a dynamic set featuring MIX in full, more hits, plus their killer version of Sharon O’Neill’s ‘Maxine’ – which took the 2017 Vodafone NZ Music Awards by storm.
In the early 2000’s Elemeno P erupted onto the New Zealand rock scene, seemingly from out of nowhere. A four-piece with straight-arrow, energetic, power-pop anthems. A succession of massive hits such as ‘Verona’, ‘Every Day’s A Saturday’, ‘Fast Times in Tahoe’ and ’11.57’ followed.
Equipped with a fun-loving attitude, Elemeno P soon became household favourites across the nation, releasing a trifecta of top tier albums in the space of six years.
The band’s debut album ‘Love & Disrespect’ was released in 2003, reaching number #1 on the New Zealand album charts and went on to sell triple platinum. Two more albums would follow, selling Platinum and Gold respectively and leading to the band taking home Best Group at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2008. Elemeno P make a welcome return to the stage in January 2020.

Billy Idol and Joan Jett were fantastic! We went to the show with our adult children and everyone had a great time and enjoyed the show!
Bill and Steve were so good. I was very impressed with their performance and after the concert I looked to see where they were performing next in hopes of seeing them soon Phil
Joan Jett set the stage with a hard driving performance full of energy and great songs.Billy Idol followed with an over the top singing, dancing, and moving show.
Joan Jett & Billy Idol were both incredible!! They both still sound amazing and put on high energy shows.
Both these artists are incredible Really enjoyed their show.
A time warp back into the 80’s tonight with Joan Jett and Billy Idol. Amazing how these 65++ old performers still have incredible talent and energy! First we had a delicious meal at 18th & 21st (named after the prohibition era from 1918 to 1921), which was like a speakeasy with a hidden entrance and beautiful art deco furnishings from ceiling to floor. I had a delectable drink, “Island Ember,” ok, I had 2, and a semi healthy avocado salad with halibut. Splurged on part of a chocolate chip bread pudding for dessert. Only a short stroll to Merriweather, and we had seats in the pavilion (yes, we were pavillionaires); such a lovely venue and absolutely perfect weather. Joan Jett gave a stellar performance with a slow start and then a barrage of her greatest hits. She’s originally from Maryland (Silver Spring), so it was a nice homecoming for her. My favorites were “Do You Wanna Touch,” “I Love Rock n Roll,” “Bad Reputation,” and “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” and Crimson & Clover.” After an intermission, Mr. Idol appeared in a mist of the fog machine and a large digital outline of his face as a backdrop. He wore his classic black leather with silver chains, and at one point was shirtless, showing off some nice muscles. His guitarist, Steve Stevens, was phenomenal and gave several solo performances, including a Spanish guitar session. The scene stealer was one of the backup singers, Kitten Kuori, who upstaged Billy during a duet of “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore.” A really detailed setlist: from setlist.com Classic Hits: "Rebel Yell", "White Wedding", "Eyes Without a Face", "Dancing With Myself", "Flesh for Fantasy", "Mony Mony"(Tommy James & the Shondells cover), and "Hot in the City"are frequently featured. Newer Material: "Too Much Fun", "Blue Highway", and "Cradle of Love"are part of the setlist. Covers: Billy Idol often includes covers like "Mony Mony"and "Ready Steady Go"(a Generation X song). Other Notable Songs: "Still Dancing", "77", "Catch My Fall", and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore"also appear. Steve Stevens Guitar Solo: A highlight of the show is often Steve Stevens' guitar solo, which included snippets of other songs like "Stairway to Heaven"
Billy Idol and Joan Jett know to give the people their moneys worth. Hopefully they tour again soon as they both still have it !
He’s the best, but needs to give himself a break. Meet and greet was totally not worth it. He’s kind of over all the crazy fans, it feels lukewarm. Give yourself a break, spend time with family, We love you!!!!!
Both Billy Idol & Joan Jett rocked the place in a big way — great celebration of their careers & 50 years of music!!
Billy Idol was totally awesome. He was entertaining and loved that he engaged with the audience instead of just standing and singing. He has still got it going on.
Took my 15 year old son who knows music better than I do but being able to enjoy music I grew up with, with him is a memory that will last. Seeing Joan Jett again (Joan Jett was my first concert ever in 1987 at ccbc) and now brought back the best memories. Joan Jett And Billy idol rocked the house, I am glad I got to see them live with him! They were both amazing!
Went to see Joan Jett and Bilky Idol at Merriweather. Both were fantastic blasts from the past. Amazing how great they both still are. Just loved it!
I had a great time at the concert. Billy Idol put on a great show and Joan Jett was pretty good. I would like to give this concert a 5 star, but having to show my "ticket", read phone image, multiple times to get to my seat was overkill. TBH once someone is inside the venue, they could have used AI to create a fake seat and go wherever they wanted to go.
It was a great concert. Going down memory lane and bringing my young adaults who thought it was great fun.
Both musicians were excellent, just like they were back in the day—voices still excellent. Also great band members for both. These 2 artists compliment each other and were fabulous!
Lawn seats. Good sound Joan Jett and Billy idol were both great
The concert was awesome. Joan Jet did a great job telling us about her songs and rocking out. Nice early songs and graphics. Billy Idol was amazing! He was funny and lots of fun. The band was incredible. Steve Steven’s was fantastic. Graphics were great and of course the acoustics at Merriweather cannot be beat. Fantastic performance!
We saw Joan Jett and Billy Idol at Merriweather Post Pavilion (Columbia, MD). They were both excellent. Joan Jett was true to core roots, the band was tight, and provided pure rock energy for their full set. Then Billy Idol came out and truly rocked the house. Merriweather has a covered stage, but the back is an open grass hill. Once night hit, the light show was excellent. He plays a lot of hits, through in a few new songs and a couple of deep cuts I wasn't familiar with, but they sounded great. He really like how Billy walks around his stage getting all of the musicians engaged! I really love how much he lets Steve Stevens solo too. I already thought he was an excellent musician, but this really showed me the Steve is awesome. All this said, I took my 25 year old son with me, and didn't really know much about either artist and was super familiar with all the material. His review wouldn't be anything like mine. I highly recommend this show for anybody that likes to rock!
Venue was awesome & show was awesome. A little disappointed in the social distancing Meet an Greet w the band but understand.
