About

Bif Naked In Concert

If you had to roll up the entire 1990s — the tattoos and piercings, the girl power, the raves — into one person, that person would be Bif Naked. Born in India but raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the raven-haired singer born Beth Torbert has punk-schooled attitude to spare, but she's also blessed with the soaring voice of a true diva. Her stage name is based on the mispronunciation of her birth name, which got combined with the word "naked" as a simple attention-grabbing tactic.

Bif's pop ambitions and emotional candor were evident from the outset — her grungy 1994 self-titled debut was graced with autobiographical, arm-swaying anthems like "Daddy's Getting Married."

But with 1998's I Bificus, she entered a new stratosphere of popularity thanks to the electrifying single "Spaceman," which catapulted her to a No. 1 placement on the Canadian Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album's other Top 10 entry, the adrenalized ska-punk thrasher "Moment of Weakness," was a reminder she hadn't completely forsaken her mosh-pit roots. Her hot streak continued with the 2001 hit single "I Love Myself Today," a self-empowerment anthem that stakes out the middle ground between punk and Pink.

However, following the release of 2005's Superbeautifulmonster, Bif was diagnosed with breast cancer. While seeking chemotherapy and radiation treatment, she recorded 2009's The Promise, which captures Bif in full battle mode on the nu-metal rager "Sick" and sardonic kiss-off ballad "F**k You 2."

Since her recovery, Bif has devoted her energies to sharing her experience with fans and fellow survivors. In 2016, she released a memoir, I, Bificus. She followed that with a tour where she performed her hits in a more intimate setting, sharing stories from the book between songs.

But Bif is ready to look forward once again. In 2018, she released two new singles — the industrial groover "Heavy" and cabaret-punk swinger "Hot Box Girls" — with her signature sass intact.
