About

All the world's a stage, and the Spanish guitar is one of its greatest instruments. Benise is bringing his Flamenco-inspired pieces and tango-infused dance numbers to the stage, leaving all who hear him spellbound in his wake. Benise is a world-renowned guitarist who has brought his unique blend of Spanish guitar and world music to stages worldwide since the early 2000s. His 2022 tour, aptly named the "20th Anniversary Tour," showcases the best of Benise throughout the years by virtue of music and dance.

His passion for the guitar has taken him on an incredible journey from the streets of Omaha to busking in Southern California and finally to the world stage. Known as "The Prince of Spanish Guitar," Benise has been wowing audiences worldwide with his sizzling music and spellbinding dance for over two decades, rocking fans across the globe with his sultry blend of Spanish guitar and world rhythms, winning the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.

The result: a mesmerizing feast of sight and sound from which no audience member will ever want to escape. Benise has truly mastered an international style of music having been influenced by nearly every genre possible, with great depth and passion vibrating underneath.

Growing up on a farm in Nebraska, his devotion to rock music was palpable. That success was just a twinkle in Benise's eye before finally picking up flamenco music in 1994. From there, he met violinist Jim Sitterly, guitarists Gilberto Gonzales and Yussi, bassist Mychal Lomas, drummer Carlos Lopez, and percussionist CG Ryche and formed a band (also) called Benise.

Benise's sound is primarily influenced by flamenco music and incorporates elements spanning Brazilian samba, Cuban salsa, Parisian waltz, African drumming, and more. The magic happens by bringing together musicians from different countries to create a unique sound that melds their cultures through music.

A significant turning point in Benise's career came when PBS approached him to create a show for its "Great Performances'' series. He spent time writing and recording what would become "Nights of Fire!" -- which made its broadcast debut on public television stations nationwide in 2006 and subsequently won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Costumes for a Variety or Music Program.

Since its debut, "Nights of Fire!" has drawn in audiences of all types -- whether or not they have any familiarity with flamenco music. Dazzling lights, dancers and aerial performers make you feel like you're experiencing something transcendent rather than just listening to a concert.

Benise's ability to reproduce sounds from around the world makes him a force of nature. His original style has earned him worldwide recognition, while he continues to push the envelope. Don't miss out on this unique spellbinding performance and see Benise live when he comes to a city near you.

  • Modern Techno Spanish Acoustic

by (Amplified) Acoustic Guitar on 8/8/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Percussionists, amplified guitars, and the admirable/adorable dancers were a total delight--and the first live rock performance since college years. I was singing O Fortuna and Ave Maria (once I locked in on which piece was being played--Schubert, not Beethoven). Although this show was enormously entertaining, it was very very different from (classical) flamenco/acoustic guitar (billed as Flamenco, Instrumental, Latin, Rumba, Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, and Spanish Guitar).  I think it would have helped to add the words "Techno rock with major sound/light enhancements"...so now I recognize the billing omitted "classical". I saw flamenco dancers (and their musicians) at Broadway Performing Arts (affiliated with Seattle Central College) in the 1990s, I saw/heard Andre Segovia when he came to Meany Hall in 1979 or so, and he did not use amplified sound. I was looking forward to that classical intensity. I also performed in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana several times, including at Benaroya and 5th Avenue. It would have helped to mention that the presentation included pre-recorded works. Oh, and the girls: please make a video recording for dancercise! THAT was the most inspiring of movements that awakened the dancer in me! PS: Neptune (VIP seating) has less leg room than a Mexican school bus.

  • Great show, theater not so much

by DS on 8/8/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Great show, but the theater leaves a lot to be desired. Theater is well past its prime and needs a lot of TLC. STG you have work to do.

  • Awesome experience!

by Sadie on 7/25/23Rating: 5 out of 5

This show was great. It had a little bit of everything in the music selection from Led Zeppelin to some Cuban, Brazilian and of course, Spanish beats and dances, not to forget the ballet performance which was awesome. This was the first time I saw it and I'm definitely a fan!!

  • Better than we expected!

by David Chiriboga “The Spanish Guitarist” on 7/25/23Rating: 5 out of 5

As a Spanish guitarist myself, based in Chicago, I wanted to see what all the hype was about and see if I’d leave impressed or disappointed. I honestly thought it would be somewhere in the middle. But to my surprise we left with a great impression. Benise has a phenomenal energy and stage presence, loved his artistry. The musicians were great and the production value was entertaining. Recommended for Spanish guitar fans and aficionados! 👍🏼

  • NO SCENOGRAPHY??

by BajaMon on 1/10/23Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

The music and dancers are wonderful!! But to have them try to transport us to Spain on an empty stage felt like a rip off. I expected the fountain and other stage props. It looked nothing like the promo trailers and it wasn't cheap.

  • Should have read bio more

by Jacob on 1/9/23Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

The experience felt cheesy. I should have gotten more info on the performance before I bought tickets. I would have preferred something more authentic and less commercialized. Still had fun and glad I went.

This is the second time we go. Hopefully, we'll be able to see it again next year.

  • Performance of my dreams

by Vero on 10/12/22Miami Dade County Auditorium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

The show was exquisite and lived up to/surpassed my expectations. Dancers added the right touch Loved how personal Benise gets and the musicians on his team were like a tight knit high performing family. The acoustics in the auditorium was perfect so I felt enveloped by the music. The one negative: maybe more insistence that spectators keep their phones off - the lights can be distracting to those seated to their rear and may not be so obvious from the stage

  • lacks passion

by LinKat on 10/10/22Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 1 out of 5

This was one of those times when you keep hoping it will get better, but it never does. The musicians were good, especially the lead guitarist. I believe Benise actually played his guitar during one slow number he did with his lead guitarist, but I would bet the rest of the show was canned music. HIs hair was straggly & he was continuously flinging it in his face & over the guitar, his clothes were ill-fitting & shabby, he was not excited to be there, no passion. There was one decent dancer, the others appeared to be amateurs from one of our local dance studios, plus all the dance numbers were the same except for costume changes. NOT genuine flamenco. The LCD screen got old real fast. During the two drummers' solo, one of the drummers kept encouraging the audience to cheer. We were bored but had center orchestra seats, so couldn't leave early. This was not a good show.

  • Entertaining

by Peter on 10/10/22Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 4 out of 5

Fun to watch, talented musicians but played with a lot of pre-recorded music and sounds. The show could have done with a few more vocals.
