My girlfriend and i went to this concert.... i have been listening to him for years now... but she really wasn't introduced to him until the day of the concert... When Ben Sollee came out and played his opening song.. just a few honest words~ it took her breathe away... truly.... he sounded better live then on his records... its almost like they do not do his voice justice like a live performance..... the ark is just a fabulous place to see anyone, to hear a clear sound.... to just relax and truly truly take it all in
Ben Sollee is a brilliant, passionate musician. To my delight, I found that he's picked two touring partners in Phoebe and Jordan that are equally brilliant and passionate. Ben's voice is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley in some ways while his cello-play adds an entirely new, soul-grabbing texture. He took out a Telecaster for a few songs that still maintained his heartfelt vocals and bluegrass-influenced backbeats and accompaniment. Phoebe is FIERCE in the best way when she plays her fiddle. She played bass with great energy as well, but her fiddle skills are something to see. Lastly, Jordan really holds together and completes the trio with a masterful knowledge of both kit drums, and the increasingly popular box drum known as a Cajon. Each song transmitted great energy and warmth. Additionally, Ben always carries a great message in his music. He did a brief aside about the mountain top removal in Kentucky that nearly brought some to tears. To top it all off, he satisfied two enamored fans' request to play "Built For This" as they shouted that they got married to that very song. They shared a beautiful dance straight out of a fairytale intertwined with smiles, giggles, and just a little disbelief. For good measure, he added a well-done cover of "Wild World". It was truly a beautiful show in so many ways.
This was an awesome show. I've been following Ben for a year now ever since a friend heard him play on NPR. His music is different and although he comes from the south, it's not that generic country music you hear on the radio. He brings so much talent with his cello in a bluegrass/folk/jazz kind of way.The venue was a lot smaller than I though which made the show better. It was dark and intimate which i fully enjoyed. Drinks were very $$ though.
Ben Sollee is an amazing performer and I was expecting his show to be great, but what really blew me away was Sean Rowe, whose incredibly captivating voice and rhythmic guitar playing swept me off my feet. Overall a great concert - energetic and soothing at the same time. I also like the Brighton Music Hall - great stage setup.
