BEN HOWARD IN CONCERT:

Mercury Prize-nominated English singer-songwriter Ben Howard’s voice, songcraft, and intricate guitar work take the spotlight during his understated yet emotionally powerful live performances. On tour in 2013, Howard drew stellar reviews for his festival  appearances at Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, and the Montreaux Jazz Festival, generating buzz for the 2014 release of his highly-anticipated sophomore album.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“An absolutely amazing gig. Great atmosphere and spine-tingling performance from Ben Howard.”

“Incredible. I don't think any other word could be used for how amazing Ben Howard is. I had been looking forward to seeing him perform and play guitar for months and he surpassed my expectations. “

“Ben Howard is one of the few artists who is actually better live than on his album. Amazing show!”

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ben Howard was raised in a musical household where folk music held court. Inspired by artists like Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, and Van Morrison, Ben began playing guitar and writing his own music at an early age, penning tunes in the highly melodic, rootsy style of his folk idols. His 2011 debut LP Every Kingdom  was a huge success both in the UK and the US, yielding the hit singles “Old Pine” and “The Wolves” and earning him two Brit Awards in 2013—British Breakthrough Act and British Solo Male Artist.

    A bit disappointed

by taylorboebaylor on 10/15/18Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

The venue was great. Ben Howard's set and stage presence was not what we had hoped. While I love the new album, he played it almost in full and only played a few songs from his other work. The new album is quiet, slow and not something I was expecting to stand for 2 hours to. It needed a pick me up and it felt as though Ben didn't want to be there at all. Said all of 10 words to the crowd. I will forever be a fan, his talent is unparalleled but this show was not his best.

    This concert was sadly disappointing

by 101518 on 10/15/18Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Going to see Ben Howard was a bucket list concert for me. I have frequented many shows in my life as I have a huge passion for live music. I've listened to Ben for many years, his songs always lifted me up and helped me through many tough times. I've looked forward to this concert since the moment I bought tickets. It took us about 4 hours to get into the city (typically a 2 hour trip), our excitement helped us to keep smiles on our faces. Upon arrival, we had to wait in a line that wrapped around the block. To say we were sick of waiting, is an understatement. The concert started at 8:00 and we actually weren't moving into the venue until after the opener started playing. We were shouted at by security and moved along like cattle to get into the ballroom. I certainly did not feel like a paying customer that was there to enjoy one of my favorite artists. The venue was great, we had standing room tickets so we were able to get nice and close. At one point my fiance left me to go get himself a bottle of water. He was told by multiple members of the staff that there was no water to buy, that he couldn't even have a cup of water. What the heck? As the concert moved along, each song was more melancholy and monotone. Not once did Ben play a song off any of his old albums. Each song was off of the newer album/albums. After about an hour of waiting in anticipation for the crowd to get moving and the concert to pick up we started to contemplate leaving. The girls in front of me were googling the song lyrics, as they stared at their phones, vaping, singing the songs word for word...off of their screens. I kept hope that he would play SOMETHING that I knew, something that I've waited YEARS to hear live and in person...and that moment never came. After he came back to the stage for his "encore", we watched the crowd start to exit as many people yelled "boo" and were shaking their heads in disbelief. We waited until the concert was finally over and exited the building...to find a gentleman on the street playing some Ben Howard covers. His voice was wonderful, he played his guitar like an angel and poured his heart into covering those songs...he was far better than what I had just witnessed. As we drove home, I cannot say how disappointed I was...the concert was NOTHING that I imagined it to be. I would recommend thinking twice about buying a ticket, perhaps stay home and just enjoy his former YouTube videos in the comfort of your home. I hate leaving bad reviews, but I do feel that maybe it will save someone the heartbreak that I experienced.

    Ben... what the heck?

by ALBE1991 on 10/15/18Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

I wish I could have the time I spent listening to Ben Howard back. He didn’t play any of the songs he’s known for. I was looking forward to him playing about 5 of his well-known songs, but he did not. Instead, it was 2 hours of what felt like one very long depressing song. We waited hoping it would turn around, but it didn’t. He mumbled on stage and barely addressed the audience. His jokes weren’t funny... just random anecdotes only his band understood.

He played 0 songs from Every Kingdom. At least through the crowd a bone or 2. Most underwhelming concert I've ever been to.

Totally happy with the concert. Wasn’t expecting to see/hear the most popular songs.. I can listen to them at home . The goal was to see Ben and I did and I’m super happy! Sad hat the crowd was so boring.

    Just too slow to enjoy.

No stories. Music was too mellow. Got sleepy and left early.

    Didn't win the audience

by Anonymous on 10/15/18Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

All the songs were from latest album only. You could feel that most of the crowd wasn't familiar with some of the songs. Because of that, people were talking to each other or staring at their phone throughout the concert.

    Biggest Disappointment

by Chloe88 on 10/13/18Hammerstein Ball Room - New York, New York

We watched Ben's concert last night in NYC. It was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING. He didn't play any of his popular songs. There were 8 musicians plus 1 DJ on the stage with Ben playing instruments that gave high pitch sounds. They also didn't tune the music right so we constantly heard echoes. On top of everything that went wrong, Ben had zero interaction with the audiences. It was very clear to us that he played music for himself and not for his fans. After 30 minutes of playing bitter music, the crowd was restless and started to leave. We were very disappointed to waste our time and money to see his concert. Never again for this artist. Ironically, we heard a busker playing one of Ben's popular songs outside the music hall while we were walking out. Oh boy, he is much better than Ben!

    AMAZING.

Ben Howard was magical. Being able to see him play in real life filled our spirits. We came completely in awe of him and left even more in awe of him.

    Disappointing Set

    by Niloc29 on 10/13/18The Anthem - Washington

I was extremely excited to see Ben, as I have been waiting for years to see him. I fell in love with his early music and his raw emotion. Unfortunately, this show was a big disappointment. I understand playing new music with a new album out, but there wasn't a single song played outside his last two albums. On top of that, there was no energy, no interaction with the crowd, and I felt the whole performance lackluster.

    Worth the wait....

by ccdreamer on 10/12/18Blue Hills Bank Pavilion - Boston

I've been a massive fan of Ben since his EK days and he ranks as one of my favorite artists. His music has been a huge part of the past 4ish years of my life and has been very healing for me. I've waited as long to see him live and finally got to this past Sunday in Boston. It was worth the wait. While it is true that he was quiet, and frustrated with his performance, and didn't play any older work to speak of, I wasn't there to be entertained by his personality and I wasn't expecting to hear older works after reading set lists from previous shows (plus, that's what live videos on YouTube are for!). I can understand not wanting to play older music that no longer is who you are; I no longer want to do a lot of the things I did when I was younger either, regardless of whether or not it's what others want or expect from me. I personally found the stripped-down, quiet, music-forward approach refreshing and for me it was exactly what I was looking for. YMMV, but I'd see Ben again happily.

    Ben drank the whole time.

by Anicorobin on 10/12/18The Fillmore Philadelphia presented by Cricket Wireless - Philadelphia

It’s frustrating when you pay $60+ to see one of your favorite artists drink the whole time, seem like he doesn’t care, and barely interact with the audience. The audience clearly was not feeling the set list. I wasn’t either. It woulda helped if there were some old favs thrown in with the new music. The new albums tone is completely the same all the way through. His band was good though and seemed way more into to performing than he was.

    Sadly disappointed

by Mjohn2018 on 10/12/18The Fillmore Philadelphia presented by Cricket Wireless - Philadelphia

Coming from a long-time fan I was soo sad to find that none of my favorite songs were played... or even any of his hits. Also was bummed in general with the way he interacted with the crowd.

    Ben Howard is incredible!!!

by Anonymous on 10/12/18The Fillmore Philadelphia presented by Cricket Wireless - Philadelphia

Ben Howard is one of those musicians that I would pretty much postpone anything in order to make it to see the show. He is playing mostly his newest album, and after seeing him live, I understand why, Noonday dream is a collective, it has to be played in its entirety. Do yourself a favor and go see Ben Howard. I promise it will be the best concert you go to this year.

    Totally different artist

by AJMusic123 on 10/12/18The Fillmore Philadelphia presented by Cricket Wireless - Philadelphia

I get that musicians evolve. However, when the genre, style, and energy change so drastically it really doesn't seem authentic to the original. I'm disappointed that I thought I was going to enjoy a certain atmosphere of music, and instead it felt like I was at the wrong show. I understand why he didn't weave in his old hits (as many reviewers mentioned)....it isn't the same type of music and would have been ill placed. Talented guy, but this seems like an identity crisis. It's a shame he didn't figure out a way to evolve that would appreciate the root of the music he originally created.

    Huge disappointment

by JMenzie on 10/12/18The Fillmore Philadelphia presented by Cricket Wireless - Philadelphia

Was really looking forward to this show. Thoroughly disappointed with Ben though. The set had zero energy at all, and the set list was downright sad. None of the songs that he is known for. Just an over instrumentalized, boring set with 1 song encore that seemed forced and obligatory. Will not pay to see him live again.

    Something was up with Ben

by Mothgraphics848949493 on 10/10/18Blue Hills Bank Pavilion - Boston

Had high hopes for this show but it was clear when Ben wouldn't make eye contact with the crowd and then walked off stage halfway through the 6th song that something was up with him Personally. I'm not sure what was going on but he walked off stage a second time leaving the band looking at each other wondering what was going on. No Encore and only played a couple songs off of any album except the new one. Disappointed.
