About

BEIRUT IN CONCERT:

Beirut combines orchestral pop with world music to create intriguingly complex songs that are also infectiously catchy. Bandleader Zach Condon helms everything from vocals to flugelhorn to bring a uniquely diverse sonic palette into each sugary-sweet pop confection. In concert he surrounds himself with top-notch musicians, who infuse the band's indie rock sounds with eclectic folk instrumentation. By incorporating so many different influences, Beirut makes their concerts feel like a globe-trotting adventure for ticket buyers, who can’t help but sing along to familiar favorites like “Elephant Gun” and “East Harlem”.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Zach Condon was born in Albuquerque, NM in 1986 and raised predominantly in neighboring Santa Fe. Though his experience in jazz band taught him how to play trumpet and helped him gain an appreciation for complex musical expression, Condon dropped out of high school at 17. The budding prodigy was exposed to the diverse musical traditions of Europe on a soul-searching trip abroad, and he immediately began incorporating a wide range of international styles into his home recordings. Adopting the moniker Beirut, he released a collection of demos as his first full-length album Gulag Orkestar in 2006. The record became a surprise hit following the viral success of the music video “Elephant Gun”, leading Condon to put together a live band for an impromptu tour. The lineup stuck, and the group’s 2011 album The Rip Tide converted an entirely new segment of fans when the single “East Harlem” was featured on Pitchfork’s Best New Tracks. After a period of intense personal issues, Condon thrilled fans in 2015 with the announcement of Beirut’s fifth album No No No. As they continue to tour the world, Beirut seems destined to absorb the musical influences of every place they visit, incorporating each new sound into their signature chamber pop masterpieces.

  • Beirut: Brighter and Cleaner

    by GabyRipples on 9/23/11Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

You have not heard Beirut until you have heard them live. The horns are bright and clear, the drums sound deeper, richer, and the energy is spectacular. Terminal 5 was the perfect venue - loved the flashing strings of lights above them adding to the festival atmosphere. Almost felt like being in a town square with an amazing band. A little crowded since it was sold out, but it's Beirut, so what do you expect? And two perfect encores. Laetitia Saedier was lovely, and I already loved Stereolab so I was looking forward to her set, but she did have the problem of her songs often sounding very similar to each other, and hard to distinguish. And the only Stereolab song she played was an early one I didn't know, but that's hardly a complaint. She was a pleasant opener, but I wish she'd been a little more energetic in her performance to better warm up the venue for the amazingness to come.

  • Amazing. Absolutely.

Amazing. Did not dissapoint at all. It was so quaint and lovely.

  • Great concert!

When I first heard Beirut I thought it was David Byrne singing (yes, I'm that old) -- I loved the funky instrumentation, and the way he makes trumpets and trombones so cool. And contrary to what many say about Terminal 5, the acoustics were excellent. Hope they come back to NYC soon.

  • Utterly, definitively great

by Salonie on 8/6/11The Phoenix Concert Theatre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

As expected, the musician inspired. Playing a range of song titles from a cross section of albums, it was a show I didn't want to end. Playing loud and vibrant, I still can't get the sounds of carousels out of my head!

    by adeline92 on 7/31/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

beirut is an unforgettably amazing band that will always be dearly loved by it's loyal fans! only disappointment was opening act lady lamb and the beekeeper, she was just terrible and it wasn't fun to sit through an hour of her screeching...

  • Beirut show was superb

    by crimsonking1953 on 7/31/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

It was nice to finally get a chance to see Beirut, a very different and amazing band. Sound was very good, we were very close and could see very well. They ran through a great representation of their songs and did some new ones. Only cons were that it was very warm inside, and I wish they had played longer. the crowd was very into the concert, which was nice.

Great venue -- small, intimate theater in the heart of portland's art district. Beirut put on a tremendous performance w three encores. I look forward to seeing more shows here.

  • Beirut Was Beyond Incredible

    by VanCarrie64 on 7/31/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Beirut was outstanding! They have such a connection to their music and their audience, you can't help but feel so connected with who they are and what they do. I saw them at the State's Theatre in Portland, ME, and they blew me away. Not to mention that they sound the same, if not better live than they do recorded. They don't just play music, but every song is a revelation and a vision within itself.

  • Absolutely amazing

by Anonymous on 7/31/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I was extremely excited to go and see Beirut. I've been a fan of Beirut since I first heard them about four years ago. I usually have really high expectations for everything that I like, then I'm usually disappointed. However, this was completely different. It's really hard to explain how awesome Beirut is. The sound is absolutely fantastic. I've listened to music my whole life, tons of different types, and nothing compares to this. If you have any chance at all to go and see Beirut, you should definitely go. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time. A+.

This was the first legitimate concert I actually took the time and money to go and see. Ill never regret it. The atmosphere created and the amazing music that was played was certainly worth the low price of 25 dollars. The opening act was also incredible.

  • Incredible live experiance!

    by tx2me7377 on 7/31/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing show! The opener was fantastic. Show was packed and sold out and definitely an audience that knew pretty much all of their songs. The drummer was the key that made this a great live show, the drums were much more powerful and brought a whole new energy to the show that you cant get by listening to the CD. Recommended for anyone who likes this band!!!

  • Beirut with Lady Lamb

by ellenmh on 7/31/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

This was a pretty great show. Lady Lamb the Beekeeper opened and was absolutely fantastic. Her voice is ridiculous and her songs are funny and smart. Beirut was also very good. Brass parts were slick as hell and very fun to watch.

  • downright amazing!!!

    by Goodyc2c on 5/11/11The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Beirut sound every bit as good live as they do recorded. Which is to mean, absolutely incredible! You can't help but sway to their sounds. Would definitely recommend their show to anyone and would go again and again.

  • Beirut at The NorVa-

by KaitlynChristine on 5/11/11The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

I was so excited about finally getting to see Beirut. It was the first night of their tour and they were absolutely amazing. They played everyone's favourites, along with some new music. Their new music is wonderful, by the way. Even after they left the stage, they came back and played one more song.
