BECK IN CONCERT:

Alt-rock icon and master of reinvention Beck made a return to form of sorts in 2014 with Morning Phase, a companion album to 2002's beloved Sea Change. Eschewing the irony and sampling featured prominently in many of his other outings, Beck's latest is awash with earnest optimism and acoustic instrumentation — the result is a lush, organic, emotionally charged tour de force that comes across as beautifully in live concert as it does on record. Backed by a full band, Beck hits the road in 2014 for the Morning Phase tour, which includes a much-anticipated appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Beck moved to New York in 1989 and cut his teeth in the city's anti-folk scene before returning to Los Angeles in 1991. In 1993, his limited-release single "Loser" became a surprise college radio favorite, eventually growing into a mainstream Top 10 hit and garnering him a flood of label offers. Signing with Geffen Records, he released Mellow Gold in 1994, launching to both critical and commercial success virtually overnight. 1996 follow-up Odelay would prove even more successful, spawning three hit singles and taking home several Grammys, including Best Alternative Music Album. In the ensuing years, Beck's creativity and fearless experimentation have made him one of pop music's most idiosyncratic talents — the acclaimed 2014 release of Morning Phase, his twelfth studio album, proved that he's just as vital today as he was 20 years ago.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Beck was ridiculously amazing. If you get a chance to catch him live, do it while you can. He is a true showman and should not be missed."

"As usual Beck put on an amazing performance. He played a few songs from each album (including the reader), and he played every last one spectacularly."

"He plays a mix of his old & new material, both acoustic & electric, he breaks out the harmonica, then plays a cover of Billie Jean. What!?! I only wish it could have gone on all night long."

He Was So Funky! Great Show at a Great Venue.

by DrRobF on 9/14/23Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Although there were two opening acts and co-headliners, we went to see Beck. The show was at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Baltimore. Great venue too. I am not really sure what I was expecting. I had never seen Beck and only listened to a hand full of his songs. My wife has loved Beck since her childhood but I am new to his music for the most part. I knew his popular tunes and did some homework before the show trying to listen to a few albums. I was shocked at how funky Beck was. His music was amazing. His band was steller. But at the end of the day what was so amazing about the show was.. Beck! His dance moves were super cool. When he talked to the crowd it felt like he was chatting with old friends. I loved the show from beginning to end. Beck is a funkmaster with some groovy moves and amazing music.

    A fantastic entertainer

by nannimae on 9/14/23Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Beck is dynamic, energetic, and fun. I am curious how much of the performance was live, he's known for layering so much into each cut, I didn't see the artists that matched dinner of the sounds coming from the stage. Definitely a great show.

Beck & Phoenix we’re amazing live.

by Macnerd77 on 9/14/23Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

I was quite shocked at the quality of the audio with the show. All bands that played very clear you can understand your voices. You surely concerts are not as good because you can’t understand the artist very well Beck was amazing and I will definitely see him again.

Great facility, Amazing stage lighting, amazing show, but ludicrous volume. Really stupidly and unnecessarily loud low frequencies.

    Just wonderful!!

by Amy on 9/13/23Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

I have been a Beck fan for many years now and have wanted for a very long time to be able to attend a concert so when I found out that he was touring and that the last show was one within driving distance of my home, I immediately purchased a ticket! I was thrilled to be there and could not have been more impressed with the show! I know that anyone fortunate enough to have gone to one of his shows was NOT disappointed! My only disappointment was that after purchasing the black Odyssey tour t-shirt with the dates on the back (a small), I could not find it the following day even though I distinctly remember carrying it with me to the car, draped across my arm. After the show I drove 5+ hours straight home, thought I brought everything in but could not find my shirt the next day. I am heartbroken because it has still not shown up. I lose things all the time(!) but I have looked everywhere and I can't imagine I dropped it while getting into my car. I called Merriweather to ask if one had been found in the lot I parked in but, of course, the person I spoke to told me the lots were cleaned up after events and any merchandise returned to the performer(s). She did not offer to have anyone look, etc. so I have no idea if it was dropped and picked up or not. I drank nothing but a Red Bull while there so I find it hard to believe that I could have dropped it and not noticed!! I looked online to see if anyone was selling any shirts on eBay or elsewhere but couldn't find a single one. I also emailed Beck's official website but have not heard back to see if there are any additional tees (I can provide proof of my ticket with a screenshot). So I couldn't be more disappointed about the tee but the show was stellar!!! Thank you, Beck, for a wonderful night!!

    Greatest entertainer in Alternative

by Hadique on 9/13/23Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Beck continues to blow me away every time I see him. This show was no exception. He’s back with his core, OG band that’s been with him for decades and they’ve all achieved some sort of zen-like bond that works at some cosmic level beyond what mere mortals can imagine. The set list was as good as I could imagine. Literally, he played every song I wanted him to play. Kudos to the lighting team for building incredible visuals that filled the entire stage with walls of light. Kudos to the sound team for delivering a flawless wall of sound that sunk all the way to my bones. I can’t wait to see him again. Next time I’ll get even better seats!

Beck and Phoenix rock a pretty sweet Maryland venue

by Pop Culture Lunch Box on 9/13/23Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

https://www.popculturelunchbox.org/2023/09/beck-and-phoenix-rock-pretty-sweet.html Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Maryland was a bad word for me for many years. I had seen the Beastie Boys there in 2005 and the takeaway that stuck with me for years was that it was a place with truly awful sound. Plus, the vibe wasn't as cozy and nice as the similar outdoor ampitheater Wolftrap down in Virginia. And even though I was right in the pit for a 2010 Vampire Weekend show, the sound still wasn't optimal. Neil Young and Crazy Horse in 2003 wasn't great either. But I've officially changed my mind after seeing Phoenix and Beck on Sunday night. The sound was frankly amazing. And the visual show from both acts was top notch, as was the general vibe up in the lawn. Since renovations at Merriweather, in fact, I've also seen Wilco and Hall and Oates with Squeeze, and both shows had excellent sound. Back to Sunday night, my friend Brian and I arrived with our sons after the two opening acts had finished and right before the start of Phoenix. I've been a fan of the French band since its 2004 sophomore album Alphabetical. Highlights of the set included "Lisztomania,""Alpha Zulu,"and "1901,"with singer Thomas Mars (who my son thought looked like Tom Cruise, which I agree with if you sprinkle in a little Timothée Chalamet) walking through and jumping into the crowd during closer "Identical." Beck, who has always been on my bucket list of artists to catch live, played a very crowd-pleasing set full of massive hits like "Loser,""Devil's Haircut,""The New Pollution,""Sexx Laws,"and Deborah."Mellow tracks "The Golden Age"and "Lost Cause"were my favorites, and I was thrilled to get those songs from my favorite Beck album Sea Change. Beck has come a long way since breaking out with the timeless "Loser"29 years ago and has transformed into a mega rock star with very cinematic, L.A.-feeling qualities. He really knows how to entertain and captivate a 20,000-seat venue. Phoenix and openers Weyes Blood and Sir Chloe joined in for a rousing end, with bouncing Flaming Lips-like balloons everywhere, to the so-called "Summer Odyssey Tour"on "Where It's At." Everyone left happy, and you know what, the renovations there may have even addressed some of the parking, because we scooted right on out from our top-of-the-garage spot. Well done, Merriweather.

    Avid Beck fan left wanting

by GTJsMomma on 9/13/23Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

I LOVE Beck. I have loved Beck since I was 12. But I was left wanting after this concert. It varied only ever so slightly from the last show at the Anthem and the last one at Merriweather (with Cage the Elephant). Ever the showman, Beck and the guys performed spectacularly and it was still a blast.

NO TELEVISONS OF THE STAGE FOR UPPER SEATS!!!

by can't see beck on 9/13/23Madison Square Garden - New York

Beck, Great! Always brings hot and puts on a fantastic show. Madison Square Garden? Why no televisions? Kind hard to see the performance that you pay for and you cannot even see the performers faces!! Pretty poor and unacceptable.

    Music is great

by The Real on 9/13/23Madison Square Garden - New York

Well, another great show. Music and art are fantastic and a lot of what keeps life cool. Ticketmaster is a snake, slowly constricting the accessibility and synergy out of these cool experiences. Why don’t you get some more corporations involved? I’m sure spamming people that just want to hear some music will make them happy. What the fudge does Smirnoff and Dunkin’ have to do with The Offspring. Sell coffee, sell doughnuts, but don’t actively sabotage the human experience. For the love of god!

    Beck meh…..Phoenix amazing!

by Fred on 9/13/23Madison Square Garden - New York

Hadn’t been to a big show like this for a while. Wasn’t sure what do expect. Phoenix put on an incredible show. Great energy, engaged the crowd, and their playing was spot on. After their set Beck sounded like a teenager who was pretending to be a rock star. He put in a solid effort but just didn’t have the skills to hack it up. I can imagine that he might have compensated for the weak songs with his passion for performing them when he was younger. Now it just seemed embarrassing. I give Phoenix 5 stars and Beck 1, which averages out to 3.
