Celebrating its tenth anniversary with its tenth studio release, the Bay Area’s wildly innovative performance dynamo Beats Antique emerges from the studio with a brand new album and stage show to mark the milestone. With legendary sets at some of the most iconic venues and festivals around the world and collaborations with superstars from Les Claypool to Bassnectar, the next chapter in the trio’s story takes them back to a mysterious world.
When multi-instrumentalists David Satori and Tommy Cappel and choreographer Zoe Jakes dove into development of the new Beats Antique era, the concept of Shadowbox emerged. Driven by the infinite wonders of the deceptively simple design, the narrative of shadows and light, of darkness and contrast, of reality and surreality propelled the music and vision into new territory.
Capturing the heart of the Beats Antique sound means skirting that divide between the electric and the acoustic. Balkan melodies strung over crashing cymbals and marching band horn lines run smack into contemporary electronic grooves. It might be the drums and brass or the sweeping psychedelic strings that will take you for a ride down the rails of a steampunk circus. It’s chaos and cacophony on a very tight leash.
All three members shared production duties to harness the sound they first stumbled upon a decade ago: far east meets wild west. Bringing in sarod master Alam Khan (son of Ali Akbar Khan), Jakes was able to take her study of Indian classical dance from the stage to the studio. Russian singer Tatiana Kalmykova resurrected an ancient folk language to evoke a haunting fairy tale that feels at home in the shadows. Beats Antique also recruited rising stars of brass house TOO MANY ZOOZ for the horn-fueled funk and punk central to their sound.
As always, Tommy Cappel focused his efforts on the beats and bass production, while David Satori assembled an armory of stringed, plucked, and bowed instruments from far-flung lands to adorn the low-end foundation. All samples were created live in the studio—a hallmark of the lush warmth of a Beats Antique record.
The Shadowbox stage show will be teased at Red Rocks and Electric Forest before its full unveiling this fall. Taking the theme of shadow play and expanding the concept forward and backward in time, the core members dove deep, influenced by ancient practices of Indonesian shadow puppetry, falling into the world of wayang kulit, the eons-long tradition of storytelling where epic tales unfold into the wee hours of the morning.
Enormous lanterns adorn the stage, casting light upon a maze of curtains where playful new characters dance and fight and rejoice and mourn. Beats Antique is breaking the boundaries of conventional wisdom. Why can’t an electronic music performance encompass a range of emotion?
This isn’t a nuclear-powered laser light show from the ever-intensifying optical arms race of the EDM industry. This is one of the earliest methods of storytelling brought from the past into the present. “The digital is there to enhance the analog,” notes Jakes. “We’re here to tell a story,” Satori adds.
Bringing an album from the shadows of the studio to the brightly lit stage is what Beats Antique does best. These are storytellers for a digital age — equipped with the newest technology and ancient traditions. This is where the Beats meet the Antique.

High energy. Spectacular stage performance. Loved every second of it. Can't wait for them to come back through again.
I really love this band's music in general, but their live show was absolutely incredible. They played so well and the dancers were the best I have seen. At one point, they also recorded the audience clapping and then used that as part of the percussion in their song. So awesome.
After seeing the at Decibel Festival in Seattle last year, I wasn't so stoked to hear Beats live again. I came more for ESKMO, but they blew me away! BA had such an amazing stage show, the dancers were beautiful. the music was solid. The opening act, The Tailor was amazing! I'm so glad I went to this show. ESKMO ended up being the only act I was a little disappointed with. I feel like his music is not well suited to live performance.
Beats Antique is the future AND the past of music.. simultaneously!
The first time I saw Beats Antique was in Ketchum, Idaho, a couple of winters ago. They blew the doors off of that little bar (The Roosevelt), and my friends & I were fans for life. We now travel from Boise to Portland to catch them every chance we get. The combination of huge (yet musically intelligent) electronic beats, middle-eastern instrumentation, bellydancing, and burlesque road-show entertainment makes Beats Antique hard to beat in a live setting. On CD, they sound great, but the live experience is beyond words. The entire venue seems to explode with energy and movement, from the first song to the third encore. This show was no different. There's a reason Beats Antique went from doing local shows to touring the world in just a few years. These guys & girls are incredible.
Great venue, decent warmup bands, and a really great main act by Beats Antique! Got to the show around 11 and left around 1.
Amazingly talented group of artists/performers. Awesome stage presence, enthusiasm and interaction with the crowd. Ya gotta like to shake your caboose though, cuz you can't not!
Wonderful show! Sound was great, and the band was very energetic and fun. I love you, Zoe!!
Great show. packed. title says it all. wish we had known the no reentry policy - as there was no where to put items inside.
So Much Fun! These guys put on a hell of a show and the lady is siren of dance!
Beats Antique were AMAZING! They had great energy and interacted humorously with the audience. I would HIGHLY recommend seeing them when they come your way! Zoe Jakes is one of the best tribal fusion dancers I have ever seen and the way they combine electronica computer beats with real instruments was highly enjoyable, I especially loved the violin. Also, The Showbox has always been a favorite venue of mine, it has good sound quality and a great view no matter where you stand.
I enjoyed everything about the show except for one thing. I was under 21 and found it unfair that all of the stage area was open to the 21 and up side and not to those who were under 21, seeing as the barrier was moved over so that it blocked us off from the stage. I think if I come to another show at the Wonder Ballroom, I would want the stage to be divided equally just to give us youngsters a chance to get close as well. Over all I really loved it and would definitely go again. Just don't dress up too much because with all the dancing and all that's going on, you might end up uncomfortable by the end of the night because the music is so enticing, you'll be dancing the entire time. I also really enjoyed the very first act, The Tailor, but Eskimo was not my favorite choice of music.
Saw them at Wonder Ballroom in Portland. Incredible show! Tons of energy, great music, sexy dancers. An all around good time!
Belly dancers were AWESOME!! The show took forever to set up though...went w/ my bestest, it was her seventh time seeing them and my first. She said they have a lot bigger shows sometimes...still it was a lot of fun, just wish there would've been actual seats!
Great theatrics. Glad I was 21+ though because the floor was super crowded
Beats antique show was dope! I missed most of eskmo so I can't say much about him except he makes unique original glitched out beats that don't sound like any other producer. I love the way beats antique plays live intruments and interacts with the audience throughout the showshow
I have seen these guys multiple times and loved them everytime! They have a unique sound and an amazing baseline! The music & stage show is amazing! Thanks!
Awesome show! Don't miss them if they are near you!
Hands down the best show I have seen in years! They hit the Showbox with high energy that carried from the back of the room (where they entered) to the stage. The crowd fed off every beat never holding still. David and Tommy were incredible, Zoe beautiful, powerful and in charge. If Beats comes to your city, cancel all plans and GO!
Beats Antique was GREAT. Unfortunately Zoe was ill or injured and couldn't perform with Beats. I admit I'm a belly dance addict and primarily came to watch Zoe the dance goddess!!!!!!!!!! So sad. Beats was wonderful and as an unexpected BONUS was Lynx!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm her new fan and was glad I went to the show so I could get her CD which I was told would be unavailable elsewhere. So, all in all it was a GREAT NIGHT! yip!yip! As for seating...there is no seating in the Hell section at Masquerade. It is a neat venue though. BE FORWARNED only two stalls in a very cramped ladies restroom..so typical!
