About

Celebrating its tenth anniversary with its tenth studio release, the Bay Area’s wildly innovative performance dynamo Beats Antique emerges from the studio with a brand new album and stage show to mark the milestone. With legendary sets at some of the most iconic venues and festivals around the world and collaborations with superstars from Les Claypool to Bassnectar, the next chapter in the trio’s story takes them back to a mysterious world.

When multi-instrumentalists David Satori and Tommy Cappel and choreographer Zoe Jakes dove into development of the new Beats Antique era, the concept of Shadowbox emerged. Driven by the infinite wonders of the deceptively simple design, the narrative of shadows and light, of darkness and contrast, of reality and surreality propelled the music and vision into new territory.

Capturing the heart of the Beats Antique sound means skirting that divide between the electric and the acoustic. Balkan melodies strung over crashing cymbals and marching band horn lines run smack into contemporary electronic grooves. It might be the drums and brass or the sweeping psychedelic strings that will take you for a ride down the rails of a steampunk circus. It’s chaos and cacophony on a very tight leash.

All three members shared production duties to harness the sound they first stumbled upon a decade ago: far east meets wild west. Bringing in sarod master Alam Khan (son of Ali Akbar Khan), Jakes was able to take her study of Indian classical dance from the stage to the studio. Russian singer Tatiana Kalmykova resurrected an ancient folk language to evoke a haunting fairy tale that feels at home in the shadows. Beats Antique also recruited rising stars of brass house TOO MANY ZOOZ for the horn-fueled funk and punk central to their sound.

As always, Tommy Cappel focused his efforts on the beats and bass production, while David Satori assembled an armory of stringed, plucked, and bowed instruments from far-flung lands to adorn the low-end foundation. All samples were created live in the studio—a hallmark of the lush warmth of a Beats Antique record.

The Shadowbox stage show will be teased at Red Rocks and Electric Forest before its full unveiling this fall. Taking the theme of shadow play and expanding the concept forward and backward in time, the core members dove deep, influenced by ancient practices of Indonesian shadow puppetry, falling into the world of wayang kulit, the eons-long tradition of storytelling where epic tales unfold into the wee hours of the morning.

Enormous lanterns adorn the stage, casting light upon a maze of curtains where playful new characters dance and fight and rejoice and mourn. Beats Antique is breaking the boundaries of conventional wisdom. Why can’t an electronic music performance encompass a range of emotion?

This isn’t a nuclear-powered laser light show from the ever-intensifying optical arms race of the EDM industry. This is one of the earliest methods of storytelling brought from the past into the present. “The digital is there to enhance the analog,” notes Jakes. “We’re here to tell a story,” Satori adds.

Bringing an album from the shadows of the studio to the brightly lit stage is what Beats Antique does best. These are storytellers for a digital age — equipped with the newest technology and ancient traditions. This is where the Beats meet the Antique.

Quite simply, one of the most amazing and entertaining shows I have ever seen. Amazing work instrumentally, and the dance routines and costumes were incredible. Keep up the great work!

beats antique rocked and yet were very finesse, and the belly dancers added much energy to the music through dance and the different acts, showing beauty, grace, playfulness, emotional logic, strength, and personal empowerment.

The Fox theater was an excellent place to see them Live! Plus I think they're from the oakland area and the crowd loved them. I couldn't stop smiling. Go and see Beats Antique Preform as soon as you get the chance!!!

  • BEATS ANTIQUE- INCREDIBLE

by JessKixem on 4/1/12Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Beats Antique once again put on an amazing, incredible, life changing event. Every time I have seen this band I find myself more inspired. The music is beautiful, playful at times, haunting at others, intricate and addicting. The dancing and interaction with the crowd is unbeatable. You are part of the performance and your breath is taken away. There is no experience like it. I would recommend this band a thousand times. Incredible.

  • Beats Antique draws the best audience.

You know the show was good when it inspires a 50 person dance party on the street next to the Theatre. Excellent show

  • great show, but...

    by caden4444 on 4/1/12Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

I sat up in the balcony and the one thing that ultimately made me extremely dissatisfied was people's penchant to stand up and dance in their seats. I'm a tall guy so my standing up would not solve the problem for people behind me, but so many people insisted on disrespecting people who were unable to stand up. One girl asked the gentleman directly behind her if she was blocking, but did not consider any of the rows past that. The security should be a little bit more perceptive to self-righteous people's wants so they can be told to not be children and sit down for the good of all in attendance. This show was great because of the energy, but if you want to dance, leave your seat. I was not the only one aggravated at these careless people.

  • Amazing visuals ... terrible sound :(

  • Beats Antique: A Spectacular Sensation

    by Violet6666 on 4/1/12Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Got there a little late, but caught most of FIlastine's set. A true talent, his beats & mixes set the perfect tone for Beats Antique to come out & blow our minds. Zoe Jakes welcomed us into their set with a spinning mask dance which began the crowd's journey into a realm of fantasy. Despite a few breaks, each song called for new costumes & outlandishly awesome choreographies. There were 9 special belly dance guests to complement the 9 collaborating guest musicians from Brass Menazerie. They brought everything to the table, from traditional oriental dances to mermaids dancing on stools to a theatrical nutcracker-esque number complete with a hungry dragon. The encore blew the whole show out of the water when two female rappers came out & stole the stage with all the dancers in 80's style athletic wear & booty shorts reppin' their names. Between the crazy athleticism (doing the splits while balancing on their heads breakdance-style & continuing to pop their booty) & amazing showmanship, this was the best show I've ever been to hands down. It also had the best crowd, everyone was dancing & having the time of their lives. We were all so pumped by the end of the show, we couldn't help but take over the street in front of the theater & continue to dance till 2:30 in the morning. Beats Antique + Oakland = Bliss.

  • Crash-boom-wow!

by Troubador on 4/1/12Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

The opening act, Loyd Family Players, laid down a great gypsy marching band beat that had everyone jumping. They came out and joined the audience for their finale, awesome. Everyone should have a tuba player. Kind of a downbeat for second opening act. Beats Antique rocked the house, Zoe and the other dancers providing creative bellydancing to complement the music--some nice shadow dancing behind a sheet being held up by others, and some linked-together dancing. A few more dance numbers would have been nice. The sound was just the right amount of loud. The Fox is a great venue for shows like this. Apparently things got out of hand afterward outside--the fans need to ratchet it back if they want their bands to be welcomed back.

Amazing show, a bit crowded as it tends to be at the Fox (rightfully so). Wonderful live performance. Great way to celebrate the homie's birthday!

  • Disappointed. Lackluster staging and lacked umph.

    by WorldTraveler3 on 4/1/12Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

We were excited to see Beats Antique again since being introduced to their music at Outsidelands music fest where they put on a great show with fun staging. Sadly, we were disappointed in this next showing. Lackluster staging at this show, dancers who were more fan dancers than belly dancers and no lighting or interesting wardrobe on the musicians made for a dull show. We left early. Too bad as we were anticipating something more.

  • Beats Antique @ the Fox was AMAZING

by NewChautauqua on 4/1/12Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

The Beats Antique proved to be a great live act (despite the large amount of production involved in their recordings). They played everything, and sounded just like themselves. The dancers were amazing in their own right. (There was a distraction in the middle of the show- a single gal playing a 2 chord song with terrible, repetitive lyrics. Apparently they were trying to give her a break into show business, that failed despite the Mermaids). The costuming of the dancers was inventive, those girls are in fantastic shape. Particularly Vira, who danced despite being 8 months pregnant. She displayed a beauty few can express. The final finale, a rap number with some guest singers was totally unnecessary and tainted the experience for me. The real finale was the entire audience singing along with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody as they left the theater. I have to compliment the venue. The Fox is amazing! the staff was totally together. The building was gorgeous, clean and a large part of this show being a great experience. I will be keeping an eye on who is playing and make a point of returning.

Beats Antique has great music and a great show. I have seen them perform before and they always strive to bring their audience the best and they deliver. This show was no different. In fact this being their home town show made it all the more sweet. If they come to your town this would be a must see show. If you are a fan then you already know this.

  • by Anonymous on 4/1/12Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

it was an astonishing show! the grateful dead had a sign above their last warfield concert many years ago (i think 1982) that said, "they are not the best at what they do. they are the only ones who do what they do." this is true today of beats antique. the music is hauntingly beautiful and eerie and powerful and, of course, rockin'. and the show felt like a mix of a day of the dead festival and stoker's dracula with the three sisters. also, the bay area fans are blessed, gothed-out, inked-up, beautiful trippers. home sweet home!

  • Late late late

Bullcrap. We waited until 2 am for Big Freedia to come out and finally left. I heard he came out by 3 am or so. The crowd sucked, everyone was hanging out in the hall and casino, they couldn't get anyone to pay money and go inside I guess. Lame. I want my money back.

  • Never fail to impress, you guys are the best!

My god I never thought you could top your previous performances. All in all this is my fourth time seeing Beats antique. Twice before at the Montbleu and once at Wanderlust, each time I pray to see certain parts from previous shows, but you go ahead and top everything I had hoped for each time! To see you as the headlining act, be among the fans you have made, and just feel the Music in the air and see Zoe and her fellow dancer moving along... it's always a marvel to witness. Thanks for coming to Tahoe Beats Antique, looking forward to seeing Tommy, Dave, Zoe and your friends again soon! Keep up the good work (and keep making albums for me to buy!)
