About

Celebrating its tenth anniversary with its tenth studio release, the Bay Area’s wildly innovative performance dynamo Beats Antique emerges from the studio with a brand new album and stage show to mark the milestone. With legendary sets at some of the most iconic venues and festivals around the world and collaborations with superstars from Les Claypool to Bassnectar, the next chapter in the trio’s story takes them back to a mysterious world.

When multi-instrumentalists David Satori and Tommy Cappel and choreographer Zoe Jakes dove into development of the new Beats Antique era, the concept of Shadowbox emerged. Driven by the infinite wonders of the deceptively simple design, the narrative of shadows and light, of darkness and contrast, of reality and surreality propelled the music and vision into new territory.

Capturing the heart of the Beats Antique sound means skirting that divide between the electric and the acoustic. Balkan melodies strung over crashing cymbals and marching band horn lines run smack into contemporary electronic grooves. It might be the drums and brass or the sweeping psychedelic strings that will take you for a ride down the rails of a steampunk circus. It’s chaos and cacophony on a very tight leash.

All three members shared production duties to harness the sound they first stumbled upon a decade ago: far east meets wild west. Bringing in sarod master Alam Khan (son of Ali Akbar Khan), Jakes was able to take her study of Indian classical dance from the stage to the studio. Russian singer Tatiana Kalmykova resurrected an ancient folk language to evoke a haunting fairy tale that feels at home in the shadows. Beats Antique also recruited rising stars of brass house TOO MANY ZOOZ for the horn-fueled funk and punk central to their sound.

As always, Tommy Cappel focused his efforts on the beats and bass production, while David Satori assembled an armory of stringed, plucked, and bowed instruments from far-flung lands to adorn the low-end foundation. All samples were created live in the studio—a hallmark of the lush warmth of a Beats Antique record.

The Shadowbox stage show will be teased at Red Rocks and Electric Forest before its full unveiling this fall. Taking the theme of shadow play and expanding the concept forward and backward in time, the core members dove deep, influenced by ancient practices of Indonesian shadow puppetry, falling into the world of wayang kulit, the eons-long tradition of storytelling where epic tales unfold into the wee hours of the morning.

Enormous lanterns adorn the stage, casting light upon a maze of curtains where playful new characters dance and fight and rejoice and mourn. Beats Antique is breaking the boundaries of conventional wisdom. Why can’t an electronic music performance encompass a range of emotion?

This isn’t a nuclear-powered laser light show from the ever-intensifying optical arms race of the EDM industry. This is one of the earliest methods of storytelling brought from the past into the present. “The digital is there to enhance the analog,” notes Jakes. “We’re here to tell a story,” Satori adds.

Bringing an album from the shadows of the studio to the brightly lit stage is what Beats Antique does best. These are storytellers for a digital age — equipped with the newest technology and ancient traditions. This is where the Beats meet the Antique.

  • This is a gimmick!

The dancing ladies don't make up for the bad music.

What a great show! The opening acts, Sorne and Ill-Esha were pretty cool. Ive been listenting to Beats Antique for a few years, and this was my second time seeing them. I bought the tix for my girlfriends birthday. It was her first time, but she was thrilled. BA sounded great, and Zoe Jakes was as beautiful as ever! Such a fun show!

  • Amazing Headliner! Unwatchable opening act!

by Beatsnik on 11/20/13The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

I am a HUGE fan of Beats Antique. I've seen them live at least 5 times. And for this show, I dragged 12 friends with me, because I've raved about them for so long. And as always, Beats Antique delivered the goods. HOWEVER...The Fungineers were so unbelievably and embarrassingly bad, I wanted to crawl in a hole and die. I seriously almost lost all credibility with our friends. I've seen opening acts for Beats Antique before that were also less than stellar. Is that part of the show? To throw people completely off kilter? If that's the case, keep it short and sweet. We thought the nightmare would never end. The act that went on before them (Alam Khan) were amazing. Would have been a perfect evening without The Fungineers. And I absolutely would have given 5 stars otherwise.

  • Great Show!!!!!!!!!!!

    by cannotwait2008 on 11/20/13The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

My date and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this show. Both warm up acts were fun (and different). The Beats Antique show as wonderful. Great lighting effects and a compelling experience all the way around. As is often the case, the Fillmore was too cold during the first couple hours until the crowd arrived. More like FREEZING!!! It warmed up for the Beats show....partly due to the jumping and dancing.

  • Beats Antique are BA

    by hdg04001 on 11/20/13The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

These guys have always been made for the stage, a group that is meant to be experienced live, and they have only continued to step up their game! I saw them 2 or 3 years ago, and was blown away by the energy in the room, the overall mood created by the music, and the amazing bellydance/tribal performance of the talented Zoe Jakes. Now, having only built momentum over the past few years, Beats Antique's live production is a true pleasure to behold. Their new music shows depth of creativity, I gotta get my hands on the latest album. With additional dancers, an amazing stage set-up and visual art and videos, fun interactive bits, and more...I am so glad to not have missed this one! The "A Thousand Faces" Tour was supported vastly by their fans, from the art on the screens to donations and more. The group does not fail to deliver, and shows deep gratitude to their fan base for getting them to this point. Much love!

  • Beats Antique on the rise

by RoccoV on 11/19/13The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Beats Antique's performance lived up to and exceeded all my hopes and expectations for their show! From the amazing music by talented and passionate artists, to the playfulness with which they engaged the audience, to the intricate set... it was an amazing show full of things to behold. The visuals alone were a production worth seeing. These guys and their crew really set the bar, such a great show yet so grounded and accessible.

  • AMAZING!!!

Awesome beyond expectation! One of the best shows I've been to this year, if not the best! Really enjoyed the openers.as well! Thank you Beats!!!

  • Beats was good, leading 2 bands were terrible.

by VirtualRudy on 11/19/13The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Beats, as always, was great. I missed the mass of live instruments that appeared in previous shows, but overall the artwork was wonderful. I found myself closing my eyes to really hear all the sounds as not to let the artwork distract me. The first two songs were a bit different than I was used to, but again, overall it was a good experience. The Fillmore, also as always, is a kick ass venue. Love the bars, love the floor (well, except for the carpet that feels a bit sticky when standing for too long [possibly on purpose to keep you moving ;) ]). However... .... I found that the first two lead bands almost ruined the event for me. And because the DJ lady (second lead band) was using heavy beats, it almost used up my tolerance for mass beats when the main event was to come... Beats Antique, please be sure to pick better lead bands... To be honest, upstairs was some live music. She was AWESOME. I found myself retreating to listen to her sing... If she was an opener, it would have set a pretty awesome tone...

I love Beats Antique. They always have a great show. Two things about this show-- the stage was very small and they played only their new album for the first hour. I left around 11:30 to get home so if they did play some of their older music, I wasn't able to listen to it. Overall, a decent show.

Small venue, but nice staff and entertaining/fun show.

  • Just the pre-Halloween weirdness I needed

by TBrew on 10/29/13Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Could not have chosen a better venue for some pre-Halloween weirdness! Not only did Beats Antique go all out on their costumes and lights and 3D projection mapping, even the audience was all decked out in their best Halloween costumes. Music was fanstastic and loved the new album. If you are looking for a good surprise, just wait for the Gameshow! It looked like the whole stage inflated and fell into the audience. I had to take a video in order to explain the awesomeness later. The belly dancer as per usual, stole the show, surprising us all, again and again.

  • Excellent Show

We've been to many shows and up to this point our favorite was Gogol Bordello. The Beats Antique show was excellent, second only to GB.

  • Second Favorite Show Of The Year

    by JaySlim84 on 10/25/13Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Had a lot of fun at this show. I was not familiar with the opening acts but I really enjoyed their music and will be listening to them more often . Beats Antique's performance was amazing. The visuals were very trippy and I enjoyed the belly dancer. This was my first time seeing them live. I can't wait for them to come back to Columbus.

  • Beats Antique killed it!

by TrippyHippy on 10/25/13Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the absolute best shows I've ever seen in the EDM world. Well worth the seven hour round trip drive. Everything about the show from the light show, the costumes, the visual effect, down to the spirit of the music was over the top incredible. I've seen Beats Antique before and will definitely be seeking out the opportunity to see them again!

  • Neat show, poorly mixed sound levels

by DezQ on 10/25/13Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

I've been a fan of Beats Antique for awhile and getting to see them live was amazing. The performance and sets they've put together after their successful Kickstarter was a feast for both the ears and the eyes. That said, the bass levels were very high, and sounded muddy. I realize a concert is going to be loud, but if the mix doesn't allow you to hear/appreciate the full instrumentation during some songs, something is going wrong. Still, my friends and I had a very enjoyable time. Beats' dancer Zoe was both beautiful and talented, and I know I'm not the only one who thought so. Hope to see them in Columbus soon. Oh, and the impromptu Bohemian Rhapsody as everyone was leaving (semi-led by a Beats partier) was fun too. Good show all around. 4 stars!

  • Beats Antique is absolutely AMAZING.

by OCTracy on 10/27/12Beaumont Club - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

I saw this group at Bonnaroo a couple years ago. But the venue at the beaumont was amazing because of how close we could get. Each one is so talented and Zoe is just amazing.

  • Beats Antique at the Beaumont

by Moyscher on 10/27/12Beaumont Club - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome show. The Beaumont was the perfect setting for this intimate show. The band played for over an hour and put on a true show (Belly Dancer and all)! I would highly recommend this venue and band.

  • Beats Antique was the bomb

The show was tremendous. The venue was a perfect setting for a perfect show. The energy and vibe of the club and everyone who attended was electrifying. I cannot wait to see them again. I've since downloaded a lot of their music on ITunes and I'm a die hard fan!!
