About the Bayou Classic
In 2025, Celebrating its 52nd year, the Bayou Classic continues to uphold its legacy as a symbol of excellence and camaraderie within the HBCU community. Year after year, fans gather in New Orleans over Thanksgiving weekend to witness the thrilling football matchup between Southern University and Grambling State University, accompanied by the electrifying Battle of the Bands & Greek Show and the highly anticipated halftime show featuring two of the greatest marching bands in the nation. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.mybayouclassic.com. And follow Bayou Classic on Facebook at @MyBayouClassic and on Instagram at @bayouclassic74.
History of the Bayou Classic
Southern University first played Grambling State in football in 1930, when the latter was known as the Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute. It was not until 1958 that Grambling joined the Jaguars in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and the two teams started to play on a yearly basis. The prominence of both teams greatly increased in the 1960s and early '70s, with the rise of coach Eddie Robinson's Tiger teams, featuring such Grambling legends as Charlie Joiner, Doug Williams and Buck Buchanan, and Southern's success featuring such stars as Harold Carmichael and Mel Blount. The Bayou Classic was first held at Tulane Stadium in 1974, before moving to the brand-new Louisiana Superdome the following year. The dome has held the Bayou Classic every year since, except for 2005 when it was moved to Houston after Hurricane Katrina, and 2021, when a rescheduled Bayou Classic conflicted with renovations to the stadium.
No Bayou Classic weekend is complete without the legendary Battle of the Bands, between Grambling's World Famed Tiger Marching Band, and Southern's Human Jukebox. The Friday night spectacular features hundreds of marchers on each side performing alongside Grambling's Orchesis dance line and the Fabulous Dancing Dolls of Southern. In 2015, the Waterford crystal trophy which had been awarded to the Bayou Classic winner since the late '80s was retired and donated to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture by both universities. Due to the postponement of the 2020 NCAA Division I FCS season, the first-ever springtime Bayou Classic game was scheduled for April 17, 2021, in Shreveport.

The Revival of the Rivalry
by Vanitydawn on 12/2/14Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5What a great event. The game was so meaningful and the intensity of the event brought back old memories. People who never attended and HBCU or who never grew up around this will never understand the historical magnitude of this game. I am grateful that I attended and I had a wonderful time. Kudos to Coach Mitchell, Director Haymer, and all of Southern University students, supporters, alumni, and fans. I'm so glad I went to Southern U. Much love to Grambling as well. This was a wonderful event.

Gamefabulous
by GeCe on 12/2/14Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New OrleansRating: 4 out of 5I've watched and been to many games. Mostly to see the halftime show....but the game was one of a few exciting games I've seen this year. When people say down to the last second it was literally. We planned to leave early to beat the crowd but this game was just that good we had to stay because Gambling came from behind almost tied the game. One of the best games ever.
Bayou Classic
by MrsLizziebeth on 12/2/14Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5The 2014 Bayou Classic was awesome. There was excitement in the air during the entire game. Both bands lived up to their reputation of providing good music. The City knows how to move traffic during a sporting event. It took less than 15 minutes after the game to get on interstate. Can't wait until 2016 game. Best Wishes to Southern University as they prepare to take on Alcorn State in the SWAC Championship game.

thrilling right down to the last second!!!
by Soundproof75 on 12/2/14Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5As a Jaguar fan I would have rather that we ended the game with a three touchdown lead but it was more exciting the way it ended, sooooo dramatic!

I had a great time at the Bayou Classic. I am a 2014 graduate of Southern University. It is a tradition to go to the game with my parents. They started off taking me when I was a little girl. I am very proud of our Mighty Jaguars. Also GSU played a great game. The Bayou Classic is a great time for our Universities to come together. GSU is our sisterhood/brotherhood school. Although it is a rival school for sports. The crowd, game and half time show was great. I am excited about next year already.
