About the Bayou Classic
In 2025, Celebrating its 52nd year, the Bayou Classic continues to uphold its legacy as a symbol of excellence and camaraderie within the HBCU community. Year after year, fans gather in New Orleans over Thanksgiving weekend to witness the thrilling football matchup between Southern University and Grambling State University, accompanied by the electrifying Battle of the Bands & Greek Show and the highly anticipated halftime show featuring two of the greatest marching bands in the nation. History of the Bayou Classic
Southern University first played Grambling State in football in 1930, when the latter was known as the Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute. It was not until 1958 that Grambling joined the Jaguars in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and the two teams started to play on a yearly basis. The prominence of both teams greatly increased in the 1960s and early '70s, with the rise of coach Eddie Robinson's Tiger teams, featuring such Grambling legends as Charlie Joiner, Doug Williams and Buck Buchanan, and Southern's success featuring such stars as Harold Carmichael and Mel Blount. The Bayou Classic was first held at Tulane Stadium in 1974, before moving to the brand-new Louisiana Superdome the following year. The dome has held the Bayou Classic every year since, except for 2005 when it was moved to Houston after Hurricane Katrina, and 2021, when a rescheduled Bayou Classic conflicted with renovations to the stadium.
No Bayou Classic weekend is complete without the legendary Battle of the Bands, between Grambling's World Famed Tiger Marching Band, and Southern's Human Jukebox. The Friday night spectacular features hundreds of marchers on each side performing alongside Grambling's Orchesis dance line and the Fabulous Dancing Dolls of Southern. In 2015, the Waterford crystal trophy which had been awarded to the Bayou Classic winner since the late '80s was retired and donated to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture by both universities. Due to the postponement of the 2020 NCAA Division I FCS season, the first-ever springtime Bayou Classic game was scheduled for April 17, 2021, in Shreveport.
Excellent, beautiful place to be!! The environment crisp and clean. People were friendly and loving.
This year was my 1st time going to Bayou Classic but now I'm going to make it a tradition. I really did enjoy myself. There was a large group of us but we all had fun. I recommend everyone experience it at least once.
The Classic was great! Beautiful people, positive energy, enjoyed myself the whole time.
The Bayou Classic weekend in general is an awesome event. The atmosphere, the bands, the game, the excitement is unmatched anywhere. This years game turned out to be a thriller from start to finish no matter which team is your favorite. This years Bayou Classic was filled with the renewed excitement of the GSU/SU rivalry and the flavor of one big party.
I enjoyed this event! The seats were great! I always use Ticketmaster to help me prepare for awesome events/
Everything Was Just Awesome. The City of New Orleans, the Super Dome, the Food, The People, Drinks, Weather and the Bands were All AWESOME. I do NoT Have One Single Complaint! I will be Back Next Year and Every Year, Afterwards!!
The 42nd Bayou Classic was a great experience! Can't wait until next year.
The ushers and stadium staff were friendly and helpful. All fans were mixed together..harmoniously. GSU took the win!
The game was unforgettable, I will be back whenever I can, it was one of the best experiences in my life. Everyone was friendly and helpful because I am from Texas so this was my first time visiting New Orleans. The only warning I would give is be careful where you park if you park on the street, because I got a ticket because I parked in the wrong direction on the street, even though I was able to park there. The venues around after the game are fun and great to mingle at. It is crowded but its not that bad.
I attend the game every year and wasn't happy about the new time. I realized though that there was a lot more fans then in the past so maybe there was a valid reason to change the time from 2pm to 4pm. Overall, I had a great time and will continue to attend the event in the future. Thanks to Ticketmaster for the ease in purchasing tickets.
It was my husband's 1st game ever and 1st time in the Superdome ever! It was a perfect event!
I was able to get some great seats on the 50 yd line
This was our first time experience at the bayou classic and we had a great time! And the seats were amazing, great view and the comfort was outstanding. We are already planning to return next year
Had a super great time! The Mercedes Superdome is so nice and so are all the surrounding hotels. This city has done a great comeback from the storm!
Everything was great! Peaceful event and fun for all ages. Only recommendation is for ticketmaster to advise which team will sit on the home side and away side.
I really would recommend the Bayou Classic to anyone looking for a great time in a great city. I enjoyed the entire experience in New Orleans. The night life and the warm friendly people was amazing. I had the opportunity to see local high school and young drill team marching bands for the their annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. To top it off, I had a great time at the Superdome for a great game between Grambling and Southern; in addition to the two outstanding bands at haft time. Thanks to ticketmaster for a amazing seat on the 50 yard line.
The Bayou classic was well organized, the event was well worth the trip.
