Bauhaus on Tour

Few festival sets rival the one that gothic rock legends Bauhaus unveiled at Coachella in 2005. As the gig started, vocalist Peter Murphy was lowered from the top of the stage while hanging upside down, like a vampire bat, as the musicians — guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J and drummer Kevin Haskins — launched into the group's signature song and debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead." This sort of over-the-top melodrama isn't out of the ordinary for the quartet: Bauhaus concerts are immersive experiences dominated by dark, aggressive music, an intense light show and haunting vocals.

The quartet toured steadily in the early '80s before splitting in 1983, but reunited after 15 years away for 1998's Resurrection Tour. After another break, the band followed up their Coachella appearance with more touring, including a 2006 tour with Nine Inch Nails. In 2019, Bauhaus reunited for several shows in Los Angeles, which sold out quickly, and brought crowds to capacity at Tabernacle.

Bauhaus in Concert

A trio of childhood friends — Daniel Ash and brothers David J and Kevin Haskins — formed Bauhaus in 1978 with another longtime pal, Peter Murphy. The Northampton, England–based band wasted no time hitting the studio. In fact, their first session yielded "Bela Lugosi's Dead," which received radio support and was a chart success. As a result, Bauhaus inked a record deal with 4AD, which released the band's stark 1980 debut full-length, In the Flat Field.

The quartet proceeded to release a studio album a year until their 1983 breakup, with 1982's The Sky's Gone Out even landing in the Top 5 of the UK album charts. Although known for dark post-punk music, Bauhaus paired grinding guitars and ominous basslines with influences from other genres, including funk, reggae and glam. In a nod to their eclectic influences, Bauhaus also worked up a repertoire of covers, including T. Rex's "Telegram Sam" and David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust." The latter was their biggest UK hit, peaking at No. 15 on the singles chart. Bauhaus continued this covers trend during subsequent reunions. In 2006, they worked up Joy Division's "Transmission" live, which was eventually followed by a new studio album, 2008's Go Away White.

    Mesmerizing!

by VivDarling on 12/4/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

From the moment we arrived we were given extra care by your amazing staff! I walk with a cane and need special seating at events.... the entrance staff at The Palladium called for a escort, she promptly arrived, walked us through the venue safely lighting the way with her flashlight, found us seats and made sure I was comfortable. The concert was amazing! Sound was spot on! The drinks were a bit pricy.... two drinks cost more than my concert tee 😳 Overall.... excellent experience!

    Gothically Exquisite

What’s to say? I’ve been listening to this band for over 36 years. Daniel Ash is brilliant.

    Palladium is a terrible venue

    by C. n. on 11/9/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Bauhaus played a great show, but for all I know there could have been a CD player blasting their hits on stage. The venue is a giant roller rink and unless you’re right up front, have VIP tickets, or happen to be 6’3” you’re going to have a hard time seeing the band play. The drinks are also more expensive than any other venue I’ve been to.

    Bauhaus was amazing

    by D. W. on 11/7/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Everything worked great but I downloaded and stored my tix in G-Pay (Google) as I usually do so I don't have to log back on to the LiveNation site or app and after a while they disappeared. Unfortunate but not a biggie and may not be LiveNation or Ticketmaster's doing.

    bauhaus Killed It

by BrandonM on 11/7/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Phenomenal show. I was concerned they would not be rehearsed enough - not an issue. Kevin Haskins held everything together behind the drum kit. band was very tight. The only negative was all the people holding their phones up all night to record - it really distracted from the performance.

    Not so "VIP experience"

by Martin on 11/7/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

i visited the Palladium only a few months ago and watched the show from the balcony overlooking the stage. Not a bad view. And safe from the mosh pit. For Bauhaus, i spent extra , arrived early to secure a good viewing location. Unfortunately, the Palladium needed to milk extra money out of people by putting two rows of EXTRA vip table seating in front of the regular VIP ticketholders. This seriously ruined our view and many of us literally saw nothing.

    Dark Dreams do Come True

    by S. O. on 11/7/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Bauhaus! They know how to put a show on. They are gorgeous, glittery, sequinsy, sexy men. Peter Murphy’s baritone was perfection, filling The Palladium with its power. I loved the fact that these men respect their audience enough to have multiple costume changes. One outfit had feathers, another had sequins and Peter Murphy invested in beautiful hats ranging in color from a bright azure blue to midnight black. Every song was perfection. Lilting guitar rifts filled the air and the audience was delighted. This was a once in a lifetime treat. It was like an Anne Rice fever dream come true. My only regret was those gorgeous vampires on stage did not choose me to be their own ( I Joke). I absolutely recommend that fans put down your greenbacks for these truly talented goth icons.

Everything was perfect except parking. $30.00 bucks?!?

$30.00 dollars to use your lot to park? Had I not been meeting someone and running late I would have gone somewhere else.

Great show, terrible sound and mix at the Palladium

    by c23 on 11/6/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Aging goth deities delivered a charged and memorable show that was poorly supported by the venue. It seems the Hollywood Palladium is coasting on its name. Sound was very poor and whoever was running the boards had multiple problems. Lots of low end feedback on mics and guitars, and vocal mics that were off when they were supposed to be on - couldn't hear Peter Murphy singing half of She's in Parties!

    Return of the Undead

    by RC23 on 11/6/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

I'm going to eschew the nonsense and get right to the point: Bauhaus is a pretty damn amazing live band. They were tight and on-point. Granted, they've played these songs together intermittently over the course of the last 40 years but there was still so much power behind the performance that you'd forget these gents are all pushing their 60's. There were a few technical issues that were out of their control, ie. dead mic for half of She's in Parties and a faulty wireless that Peter Murphy dispatched across the stage with a single-finger salute to see it on its way, but they did not impede on the energy of the band as a whole. My biggest gripe about the show had absolutely nothing to do with the band. I was about 12 feet away from the front of the stage, which should have provided me with a clear view of the stage. Unfortunately, a majority of the audience snapped pictures and filmed large portions of the show, making it difficult to see the action on stage. Look, I get it; you want a few pictures and videos and that's fine. The problem is that a good portion of these people are screwing people out of the experience off seeing the band live. Overall, the amateur filmmakers couldn't completely ruin the evening. If you have the opportunity to see Bauhaus, do it before they wave good night for the last time.

    Too crowded.

by DDS on 11/6/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Bauhaus sounded great. I’m told they looked like it was an effortless reunion. Only problem is that I refused to stand in queue for two hours to get in to the Gen Admission area. The price for maintaining my peace of mind was not seeing the show. Simply could not get past the concessions area without what would have amounted to shoving my way through the crowd. Bummer.

    Spectacular Spectacular

    by Bela'sNotDead on 11/6/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Delicious set. The boys were on point. Great moments with Peter, Kevin and David (too far from Danny, sorry you missed me!). They sounded great, looked awesome and had terrific energy; even with Peter's ear piece monitor issues. Sound guys were dialed in, lighting dramatic, stage was minimalistic; which framed the boys and the music perfectly. I was secretly tickled by the condensed version of Bela, it didn't seem appropriate to air out the entire opus, which is far to personal and intimate to experience with over 2000 of your close personal friends. The boys looked like they were having a lot of fun. It was truly a magical evening. Thank you Bauhaus for keeping the magic alive.
