BASTILLE IN CONCERT:

Fans lucky enough to catch Bastille on their 2013/14 world tour can count their lucky stars —as one of the fastest rising groups in British music, the band's days of performing in smaller venues are certainly numbered. Boasting good looks and a winning blend of indie rock, hip hop, and synthpop, the four chaps from London have a knack for connecting with audiences at their carousing live concerts, entering the crowd to mingle with adoring fans and pose for the occasional mid-set photo op. With a string of highly anticipated US tour dates and a Coachella appearance in 2014, Bastille are well on their way to storming the American mainstream.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Bastille formed around the solo project of singer-songwriter Dan Smith, who shares his birthday with France's historic Bastille Day. The band's 2010 debut single "Flaws" was an underground hit, leading to a 2012 deal with Virgin records that resulted in the band's 2013 debut LP Bad Blood. The album peaked at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and spawned six singles, including the international No. 1 "Pompeii." A reissue and remix version of the album in late 2013 drummed up anticipation for the band's 2014 world tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The energy was incredible and the crowd and venue great. Dan came out into the crowd during his signature Flaws performance which was truly an experience."

"Bastille is amazing live! Dan is a true talent and mastermind! Kyle killed it on keyboard, Woody was awesome on drums, and Will rocked on the bass."

"The whole band rocked the house and performed all of their best songs off of their album Bad Blood in front of a sold out crowd who was jamming and singing along."

  • AWESOME SHOW

by parachuteannie on 1/27/14Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

BASTILLE was absolutely amazing! His incredible voice on the albums definitely translates over to his live and very vivacious performances. He was humble in that he thanked the crowd so many times, but we should really have been thanking him for letting us listen to his astounding voice!!!

  • Bastille was AWESOME, yet again

After seeing Bastille at Music Hall of Williamsburg last fall, I knew I had to see them again the next time they were in the area. I was fortunate enough to get tickets when they went on sale through Ticketmaster, and did not have to sacrifice my first born to the secondary ticket market, as many other people who were waiting to get in did. A friend of mine flew in to see them, and we met up with people that I knew from the MHoW Bastille show. The Venue: I've been to Webster Hall before (Bombay Bicycle Club, Japandroids, and a few other shows), and really enjoy the venue - it's a great space with a bar in the back and on house right, as well as a bar upstairs (if I recall correctly). Also, love the coat check downstairs (best $4 you'll spend; makes dancing around much easier). Given how cold it was out, they let people into the Sports Bar while everyone waited for house open. I was not one of those people, but waiting out in the cold wasn't too bad. The Crowd: This time around, the crowd was a bit older (maybe it was the midweek show), which was nice; not as many screaming teens. Everyone seemed really excited, and there were only a few instances of the "let me push through to find my 'friend'," which, again, I think the older crowd was a factor. The Band: Ah yes, the reason why everyone was there. The opener, Grizfolk, was pretty good. I only heard one of their songs previously, but it wasn't bad. And then, BASTILLE. Now, I'm not one to fangirl, but there is something about them that brings the fangirl out of everyone. Maybe it's their good looks, or their talent, or their English charm - I think it's a combination of all of that. Dan Smith writes beautiful songs, which sound just as good acoustic as they do with a full band; and are so moving live. They play as though they are having a lot of fun, and as if it could be their last performance, as in they seem to fully realize that the attention they're receiving could be a flash in the pan. Hopefully, it won't be. The set was extremely high energy, and those who have seen them before, or watched videos of their live performances were waiting anxiously for "Flaws," where Dan comes down and sings as he walks through the crowd (and sometimes stumbles as he climbs back onstage). I think they're getting used to playing live, as they seemed much more relaxed and comfortable on stage. Additions to their set from their last time they were in NYC included "The Draw," which can be found on All This Bad Blood. It has a darker, harder, more guitar heavy sound that works so well. My only complaint is that it went by too fast. If it were possible for Bastille to play every song they have, including all the covers, I would be in heaven. They, however, would probably be beyond exhausted.

  • Rising stars!

Dan Smith's songwriting is impeccable. Thoughtful and heartfelt lyrics alongside melodic rhythms make for unforgettable music. His songwriting rivals that of Chris Martin and Ryan Tedder. BΔSTILLE awes and amazes as they perform just as well live as they do in the studio. I'd pay twice what I did to see them again and I'm not at all surprised that this show sold out in 10 minutes!

Had a good time. The opening act was decent, which was a plus, Bastille was good and the venue was nice.

  • Great concert at a pretty intimate venue!

Bastille is excellent all around and sound just as good live as on record. It was awesome to to see them at such a small venue. Given their popularity, I'm sure this will be hard to find soon!

  • Bastille in Boston- I wish I could live it again!

What a great night! Bastille has a lot of energy and they were so sweet and humble and I fell in love a little. I loved his funny dancing and his interaction with the crows during Of the Night. My favorite songs were Overjoyed and Pompeii

  • Crazy!

I have gone to a lot of concerts and for some reason, this one felt more crowded/packed than normal. Band was amazing but the crowd was over-excited or something. lol At one point the lead singer jumped into the crowd and it was like the running of the bulls. Every girl was screaming and surging forward. Good for him, bad for the rest of us. Again Bastille performed brilliantly and you could tell they felt how excited everyone was. They were very appreciative of the crowd which goes a long way for me.

  • Absolutely amazing.

Bastille played an amazing set at the Royale. The energy was incredible and the crowd and venue great. Dan came out into the crowd during his signature Flaws performance which was truly an experience. Bastille is hard at work touring at a pace unknown to man and their enthusiasm remains high. I can't wait to see them again. I fear the next time I get the chance it will be at some massive venue and Dan will be hundreds of feet away instead of the inches I got to experience.

  • INSANELY AMAZING!

I have seen Bastille twice now. Once in San Diego and once in Philly. Literally the best concert of my life. They put on an amazing show. Go see them when you can! This UK band doesn't come here often unfortunately!

  • BASTILLE ROCKS!!!!

The El Rey in LA is a small venue perfect to appreciate the greatness of Bastille. The whole band rocked the house and performed all of their best songs off of their album Bad Blood in front of a sold out crowd who was jamming and singing along.

  • Bastille was great!

by gabrilicious on 9/21/13El Rey Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Bastille had a lot of energy, although I wish all of the synth from their album was able to be translated to a live performance. I really enjoyed their openers, Little Daylight, they were superb!

  • Amazing only begins to describe......

by TrickyFriend on 9/21/13El Rey Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Small venue, awesome energy, and amazing artist! Singer clearly loves what he is doing, and it showed! We had so much fun and can't wait to see him again!

  • by AngelSlr on 9/17/13House of Blues - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

It was awesome! When Nightmare and the Cat came out I knew it was going to be a great concert and then Little Daylight were great too even though the majority of people didn't know them we all became fans of them! And BASTILLE was PERFECT, it was really hot and everyone was sweaty but no one cared about that because they made it so fun everyone was jumping and when Dan Smith was walking through the audience during Flaws everyone went crazy! It was absolutely a memorable night
