We had never seen Basia perform before this concert, we only had one Basia CD and decided to attend the concert just sort-of out of curiosity, having heard nothing about her. To say we were happily suprised would be a major understatement! This was one of the best concerts I have ever attended, and that's saying something: in my 50-some years, I've attended many, many concerts, often with top-named bands ( mostly various types of rock or blues, some jazz). Basia and her band were excellent. Her singing, and that of her (twin) backup singers, was wonderful. (Basia has an unbelievable vocal range). Her very-talented band was spot-on all night, truly professional musicians who seem to handle Basia's unusual and sometimes difficult songs with ease and enthusiasm. When they settle in to one of their trademark samba rhythms, the whole place just rocks, and it's impossible to just sit still.
But Basia herself is the best part of this concert. All during the performance she truly seems to be having a wonderful time, laughing, giggling, and honestly loving and appreciating the music, her band, and the audience. I don't know if I've ever seen a performer having such a great time playing their music. Basia is having way too much fun! And her enthusiasm for the music, and performing it, is totally infectious!! Before long, everyone in the building, musicians and audience, are "connected" together, bonded by excellent music being wonderfully played, and infected by Basia's unbridled enthusiasm (and, of course, I mean this in a good way!!). I can't remember a concert being this entertaining, just downright fun, in a long time, if ever. And, judging by the response of everyone that I saw in the audience, the feeling was mutual.
I will definitely be watching for Basia & band to return to the Portland area. I wouldn't want to miss such a wonderful evening of great music, fantastic singers and musicians, and just plain FUN!!
