Barenaked Ladies on Tour

The Barenaked Ladies have been honing their musical and comedic chops since playing gigs around Canada with a comedy troupe in the late 1980s. Starting out as an acoustic duo, they quickly expanded into a full-fledged band and became well-known for their fun and dynamic live shows, where they’d throw in some of their improv and rapping skills. Since those early shows, the Ladies have been performing nearly continuously on tours that have crisscrossed the globe. Since 2004, they’ve been especially focused on the environment, offering eco-friendly options at their shows and using biodiesel to get around on the road.

Barenaked Ladies in Concert

With an amusing mix of pop, rock, sincerity and humor, the Barenaked Ladies are one of Canada’s most endearing exports. Over the years, they’ve been in a constant state of evolution, scoring hit singles in the ‘90s, contributing theme songs for TV shows like The Big Bang Theory and Odd Job Jack, releasing a holiday album, dropping an award-winning children’s album and even creating a popular fan cruise (called “Ships and Dip”). The band started humbly enough in the late ‘80s, as just an acoustic duo, featuring vocalists and schoolmates Ed Robertson and Steven Page. The name Barenaked Ladies started out as a joke, but ended up sticking — and the fact that it came off slightly scandalous ended up being to their advantage. After adding brothers Jim and Andy Creeggan and drummer Tyler Stewart to the mix, the band self-released The Yellow Tape EP in 1991. It proved to be a big success, mostly via word of mouth and their live shows. That same year, they were invited to perform at the New Year’s Eve concert outside Toronto’s City Hall, but were denied by then-mayor June Rowlands who denounced the band’s name as sexist. This minor controversy only raised the Ladies’ profile, and The Yellow Tape became the first independently released album to go platinum in Canada. They subsequently signed with a major label, Sire Records, and released their debut album, Gordon, in 1992. Folky singles like “If I Had $1,000,000” and “Brian Wilson” would become some of their most popular songs, but it’d take a few more albums before the Ladies finally topped the charts with 1998’s rapping sensation “One Week.” Going into the 21st century, the band would continue on an impressive recording spree, especially once they went back to being independent and created their own record label, Desperation Records. They released a few popular themed albums, including 2004’s Barenaked for the Holidays and 2008’s Snacktime! for kids. Even after original member Page left the band in 2009, the Barenaked Ladies have continued on, with albums like 2017’s Fake Nudes, and a number of tours around North America and beyond. In 2018, they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame after 30 years as a band.

    Still Amazing!

by Anonymous on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

I saw them 10 years ago, and even though they've had some changes, they're just as amazing! And I was so happy that they played tons of songs I know, not just ones from the newest cd. I'm going to try to see another show this summer!

It was like recess on the stage!

by 22334455 on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

What a fun concert!!! I love to see BNL!!! They have such fun with each other...it's a pleasure to see the fun they have together! I hope they include the Philly/Hershey/Reading area again soon!!! I LOVE when they make up a song that fits the place they are playing. Reading, PA it was about the Good's Potato Chips they got in their welcome basket "COOKED IN LARD!!!"...Hershey's tune was about the chocolate...Atlantic City was about the boardwalk!!! FUN, FUN, FUN!!!

    Steven Page who?

by BigFaninPA on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

Awesome show! Rocked it right from the beginning. Played a lot of the new album, and the new material was incredible! Really gave the whole band a chance to showcase their talent. Still can be fun and silly. No disrespect, but were no worse off without Steven. His energy will always be missed, but the guys reallt rocked it! Wish the show went on for hours!

    BNL is incredible as ever!!

by AMarsala on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

Barenaked Ladies rocked the Tropicana in AC yesterday evening. I have seen BNL on numerous occasions including Ships and Dip cruises. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect after the departure of Steven Page, but let me tell you....they were still the same (if not better) humorous and entertaining band that they have always been!!! The new music by BNL is nothing like their past albums, but is still to love by any true Barenaked Ladies fan! I look forward to seeing them and cruising with them again in February.

    Great as usual!

by Cavefinder on 5/9/10Tropicana - Atlantic City

BNL was in top form. Was skeptical of how they would be without Steven, but I was pleasantly surprised with the show. They sounded fantastic and didn't even miss a beat on Steven's songs. If you are a true fan of the band, go to their show you will like it. the venue was intimate and great. Even got to see Ty walking through the Trop after the show! Kevin and Jim also sounded great on vocals! Keep it up boys!!!!!

    Barenaked Ladies Rock my World!

by gen12345 on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

This concert was very enjoyable. The band played several selections from each of their CD's. They were also very funny throughout the show. The lack of Steven Page's unique style was a down point, but the rest of the band seemed to really step up. I saw them in concert 4 years ago and there was only focus on the lead singers. Now all four of the members are involved in the singing, playing and joking around during the show. The only real failure of the show was ending the encore songs with a slower lesser known piece that was disappointing. I would still suggest seeing the show.

    Amazing

by Milkshakepunk on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

I wasn't sure what to expect since this would be the first time seeing them with out Steve. Last night was the 11th time that I've seen them. And, as always, they were absolutely amazing. I loved that they played songs that Ive never seen them play live.

I have been to well over 40 BNL shows and they are never a letdown. This one was the first I would see since the band "downsized" and I was really curious to see how the new changes would effect their live performance. I had been listening to the new CD and loved it so I thought the live performance would be as enjoyable as it has been in the past. The show was PHENOMENAL! I knew I would enjoy it but was stoked at the end when it greatly exceeded my expectations. I can not wait until they come to the area again. I will definitely be there! They are great musicians and the most "user-friendly" band. I am so glad they are continuing to share their musical talent with the world.

Great, great show. BNL has always put on amazing performances and their live show hasn't missed a beat in their first tour without co-singer/co-frontman Steven Page. The witty and random banter, venue-specific songs, hilarious improvisation, dance numbers, and general sense that the guys on stage are having the time of their lives up there hasn't changed one bit. Songs and segments that Steven used to sing were primarily taken over by Ed Robertson, but Kevin Hearn and Jim Creeggan fill in aptly as well at times. Of course, Steve sings them best, and we miss him, but the substitutions were more than passable. They also mixed it up with a great duet version of Take it Back by Robertson and Creeggan (Ivory & Ivory). At one point, Robertson traded his guitar for a banjo, Hearn whipped out the accordion, and Stewart pulled out a skin drum for some more interesting variety. A cover of "It's Magic" also happened. All in all, it was a really fun show.

    Excellent Show

by anMiTy on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

This was a very energetic show. I was not sure what to expect now that Steve has left the band but I must admit his vocals were not missed as much as I thought they would be. Great song selection and the sound was great at the Tropicana!

by Gixugif on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

This was an absolutely amazing show from beginning to end. They sounded great, played so many of their great songs, including all the best off of their new album, their ad libs were great and they were just hilarious all around.

    BNL - Great as Usual!

by hillside on 5/9/10Tropicana Showroom - Atlantic City

The Barenaked Ladies still have it, after all these years. It had been so long since I'd seen BNL live, and I unfortunately didn't know some of the newer songs. As usual, however, they put on a great show - entertaining in every aspect.
