Los Angeles post-grunge outfit Badflower have gained a meaningful reputation for hard-hitting and melodic rock anthems covering themes around mental health and addiction. Comprising singer/guitarist Josh Katz, guitarist Joey Morrow, bassist Alex Espiritu, and drummer Anthony Sonetti, Badflower's tendency to address human vulnerability makes them a powerful example of how the hard rock genre has evolved in the 21st Century.
Formed in Northridge, California, in 2008, Badflower started out under the name the Cartunes with Katz and Morrow meeting in music school. They soon changed their name and recruited Espiritu and Sonetti to round out the lineup. After gigging around Los Angeles, Badflower found the attention of former NSYNC member Lance Bass, who plugged them on his SiriusXM radio show.
In 2013, Badflower released their debut EP, About A Girl. In 2016, Badflower released their second EP, Temper, via Hundred Handed Inc. The EP featured the single "Animal." In 2018, Badflower had a hit single with "Ghost," which unflinchingly discussed subjects like depression and self-harm.
"Ghost" found a significant audience and peaked at No. 11 on Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. "Ghost" was also certified Gold by the RIAA. "I was depressed and thinking about self-harm. So I just wrote it," Katz told Loudwire about "Ghost." "I played out the whole scenario and put it into a song because that's what writers do, I suppose. I didn't even know if it was gonna go on the album. I was sorta hesitant to even show it to the rest of my band, but everyone heard it and loved it."
In 2017, Badflower hit the road on the Rock 'N' Roll Now tour alongside Bleeker, Beware Of Darkness and Red Sun Rising. The same year, they began work on their debut studio album, 2019's OK, I'm Sick, which Loudwire named one of the 50 best rock albums of that year. In 2020, Badflower released "30" on Katz's 30th birthday.
Badflower followed up their debut with 2021's This Is How The World Ends, which featured the singles "Family," "Don't Hate Me," "Fukboi," and "Johnny Wants To Fight." Loudwire ranked This Is How The World Ends as the 38th best rock/metal album of 2021. Catch Badflower on tour when they come to a city near you.
Great show. Sounded awesome! Small venue was a bonus!
First let's talk about the venue. It was small and intimate, the best place for a rock concert. Now for the bands.. Dead Poet Society came crashing in with a bang earning then some new fans. Weathers kept the energy up with their performance. Then last, but certainly not least, Badflower came on and blew the whole night away with their memorable performance! I absolutely loved this night, and wish to experience it again!!!
This so was awesome!!. The opening bands rocked and Badflower was amazing. Can't wait to see them again!!
This venue is so small and intimate, it was INSANE seeing this lineup there. Dead Poets Society, Weathers, and Badflower all completely rocked and the sound was incredible. I was on the barricade so I was only a few feet from them at all times. Security guards were nice and having as much fun as we were.
Meet and greet with Badflower was awesome! As always they rocked the place. Very impressed with Dead Poets Society also.
Great show! Love that it was a small venue! Atmosphere was awesome! Good time all around! Love The Loop!! đ¤
Don't sleep on this band--these guys were incredible!! They put on such a phenomenal show and played such a long set, yet they never wavered on their intense level of energy. The singer (Josh's) voice sounded just like the album, maybe even better. One of the best shows I've been to in a very long time and the venue is one of my favorites.
Cant wait to see Badflower again. Weathers were awesome. It was my first time seeing them. Dead Poet were really good too. Only issue was the ppl in the audience vaping.
Badflower was absolutely fantastic! They are such a good band and even better live. Their opener Weathers, who i had not heard of, was also amazing!
Every one was great. Parking was the only issue all the bands were awesome!
Varsity Theater was a super cool venue. Dead Poet Society and Weathers really got the crowd excited, and Badflower was so so so so amazing. Only complaint is the way they handled the lines to get in, they were confusing. Overall a wonderful night for a great price.
We missed Dead Poet Society, but Weathers and Badflower were both awesome. None of us had heard of Weathers before, but we were all digging them halfway through the first song. The Varsity Theater is a great sounding room. Cool venue. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I think the stage could use more front lighting.
Love small intimate venues and when one of your favorite bands are playing, just makes it better! Badflower is always full of a ton of energy and all 4 members are very talented!! The new light show brings a whole new dimension to there show!!
I canât believe that all three of these bands were able to play together. They were all so good, they each should have had their own headlining tour. Dead Poet Society has some of the most unique sound in rock right now. They especially I cannot believe arenât huge yet. Weathers killed it with fun, upbeat rock infused with pop (even threw in an MCR cover that the crowd loved). And then Badflower brought Varsity Theater down with a mix of sad and aggressive rock songs! If youâre on the fence for this seeing any of them, know that whatever you pay after seeing them youâd pay 100x more.
Badflower was awesome like always! This band plays everyone of there songs with so much emotion! There is a very diverse group of ages at the show. Our group is in their 50s and we were not alone. Keep rocking!!
One of the best small venues Iâve ever been to! Made the choice to pay a little bit more for the balcony, and it was 100% worth it. Great view, great sound.
Dead Poets Society, Weathers, and Badflower put on an amazing show!! They played in a small venue in Minnesota, but I canât imagine theyâll be in the small venues for long!! If you get the chance to see them, take it!!
Absolutely amazing live. Just as solid live as on the album, packed house, and a wild show
Badflower put on a great show. I only knew one song going to this concert and now I'm a huge fan! I Absolutely loved the Dead Poet Society and I am obsessed with Weathers!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Night!
This band never disappoints. Amazing show. Cannot wait for the next one đ
