BABYMETAL on Tour

They call it "kawaii" metal ("cute" metal in Japanese) and the concept is so ludicrous it could only have come from the bizarre, wonderful subculture factory that is Japan. BABYMETAL features two (formerly three) diminutive teen girls singing pop songs — in front of a band of middle-aged heavy metal musicians. It shouldn't work, but it really, really does. Singers Su-metal, Moametal and, originally, Yuimetal are so small that they sometimes stand on boxes onstage, dressed in matching dresses that are part baby-doll, part medieval fantasy. It is a surreal and amazing sight — but for all the novelty, these ladies are surprisingly commanding. Their music is a study in delightful contrasts, melding girlish pop with guitar heroics and satisfyingly heavy rock. The group took the world by storm on their first BABYMETAL World Tour in 2014, and they were impressive enough to be invited to open for Lady Gaga during her 2014 ArtRave: The Artpop Ball tour. After their BABYMETAL World Tour 2016: Legend Metal Resistance, they were invited to support none other than Metallica the next year. In 2019, they undertook their first-ever U.S. headlining tour, supported by Swedish metal act Avatar.

BABYMETAL in Concert

Before joining the pre-fab band, BABYMETAL's singers had no idea what heavy metal even was. One singer, Yuimetal, admits she's never been in a mosh pit, and thinks she'd be "smashed to bits." Instead, singers Su-metal, Yuimetal and Moametal were all part of Sakura Gakuin, a group of junior high school girls chasing fame in Japan's lucrative "idol pop" industry. That industry is all about cultivating an image of innocence, but it can be hard to stand out; producer Kobametal originally imagined BABYMETAL as a subgroup of Sakura Gakuin that would distinguish the main group. But BABYMETAL quickly took on a life of their own, and in early 2014 the group released their first self-titled album to acclaim, climbing metal charts around the world thanks in no small part to the breakout single "Gimme Chocolate!" In 2016, the band released their second album, Metal Resistance and became the first Japanese group to headline Wembley Arena. Metalheads have embraced the group, who have been welcomed at major metal festivals. They even performed "Gimme Chocolate!" on the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Yuimetal left the group in late 2018, but that hasn't slowed the band's momentum.

Interesting, extremely high energy and lots of Fun

by mullanaphy on 11/7/14Hammerstein Ballroom - NYC

What a show, Kami and the girls rocked it from beginning to the end. Crowd at times were less than I expected preshow yet that's okay since I was there for BABYMETAL not for the crowds. First part of the show was very straight forward, choreographed, and well performed. Towards the end they added in some crowd interaction during Gimme Chocolate as well as the encore which was awesome. Guessing the language barrier makes it harder to be as interactive throughout the show but alas not a major concern. Definitely worth my ticket price and will keep an eye out for them.

Babymetal the most fun I had!!!!

by Spidspik1 on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Out of all the concerts I've been to, this by far has been the most fun I had in a moshpit. The Atmosphere was different and love the added effects that they had. Wished the event was a bit longer and the merchandise a bit cheaper since it was just one band. Overall, I will definitely come to the next event when babymetal comes back.

    Historical, heavy and adorable!

by Tengufett on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

The show was high energy. I was worried the girls would be jetlagged and not put on a good performance but that wasn't the case. The band was incredible. The audience was into it. Anybody who DIDN'T go to this show missed something special.

The new story of metal... begins now.

by JessicaMetal on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Who would've ever thought that such adorable, pop-infused vocals and energetic dance routines could meld so well with the severe thrash of a heavy metal band? BABYMETAL is a must see.

    BABYMETAL ROCKED THE HOUSE!

by Nanashisaka96 on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

The concert was simply amazing. The sound quality was extremely good and BABYMETAL's band members all showed great enthusiasm while performing. The concert was somewhat short, but keep in mind that they only have 1 album (and they played it all). I would totally go again, no questions asked and would recommend it to every fan of Metal, Pop, and J-pop music.

    BABYMETAL: Best Metal

by MissingReel on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

BABYMETAL's first NYC show was absolutely outstanding! Pyrotechnics! A second, raised stage! This was their biggest and best US show yet! They played all of their songs from their CD and did an outstanding job! It was absolutely surreal. I cannot wait for them to come back!

This was one of the best shows I been to, and certainly in the top three concerts (Ozzfest and Primus at the Hammerstein Ballroom in '97/'98 are the other two in my top 3). Excellent show, tons of energy, and it was a lot of fun. Such a strange mix of metal and japanese pop, but it just goes together so well and makes for such addicting songs that feel fresh and new. They are supposed to play again in 2015, and I will be ordering tickets the second they go on sale.

    Great Stage Show!

by SPIDEY999 on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

BabyMetal put on a great show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. Its so refreshing to see a band put so much effort into their presentation as well as the music. The 3 girl singers had so many dance moves choreographed to their songs and were really entertaining to watch. (How DO they remember all those moves?) The actual band is very talented and spot-on re: their musicianship. The only drawback was the less than stellar sound of the venue. (I thought the guitars were a bit low in the mix) But overall, I would definitely recommend this band to any metal OR rock fan with an open mind.

my first and best concert ever

by kitsunelee on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Babymetal was amazing as expected. Since my brother introduced me to their cd I have been a fan. This group is amazing and being able to see them live was even better than i thought. The bands high energy and the sass they had just gave the crowd energy. Although a lot of people in the crowd were fans because of their youtube videos the true metal fans were a blast to be around they took care of those around them and made the experience awesome. I cant wait till the metal resistance 2015 to see them again. I really loved seeing Babymetal and im so happy i got so many awesome pictures of the girls and BOH :).

Babymetal is like a live music video

by Dreamdeferred on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

The show with all its crazy lights and pyro and video packages is more like a theater production instead of just a concert. The band shows off their insane individual talent and the girls hold your attention like few performers can. The singing was on point all night. The routines were well rehearsed and only showed minor signs of fatigue from a very rigorous touring schedule. The variety among the attendees was very noticeable from 8-12 year old kids with their parents to men and women in their 40s+ with everything in between. The show was as eclectic a crowd as you can get. The "moshushu" was light and mostly consisted of the entire crowd acting like a human tidal wave crashing back and forth rhythmically or jumping up and down when the girls did. The more hardcore moshing was generally frowned upon by most of the crowd although there were pockets of "career moshers", people who go to shows more for the moshing than the actually love of the performers. The theater itself was big enough to accommodate the crowds, with the line stretching around the block before the show started. The security guards maintaining the line did a good job keeping everyone in check but some were extremely rude to many of us in line telling us things like "if you step out of line for this or that reason we will rip up your ticket" etc. Uncalled for 99% of the time. We are people not cattle. The Hammerstein also seems to be very lackluster for crowd chanting as we were all screaming our lungs out most of the night but very little of it seemed to reach the girls on stage which may have put them off. After the show, we were all given free energy drinks which was a welcome surprise. Overall an amazing show, with high production values, fantastic singing and musicianship, with only minor venue related qualms.

Babymetal, Japan's gift to the world.

by DamianLegion on 11/7/14Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

The show was quite simply amazing. Babymetal is such a fun band featuring Boh, Leda and Takayashi the polished musicians and Moa, Yui and Suzuka out in front leading an adorable charge. The Hammerstein Ballroom is a great venue for a show like this. It is small enough to still feel intimate, while big enough to put on arena size theatrics. Every song was performed perfectly. The bands musicianship is unparalleled and they are as heavy as anyone out there today. There were a few points where they were featured and their solos were unbelievable. The girls are adorable, and make me want to be a dad. Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno are a perfect accent to front woman, the 17 year old Suzuka Nakamoto. Their high energy dancing and routines fit the music while Suzuka's voice is so powerful for a girl of 16 years old. Love them or hate them, Babymetal are a true force to be reckoned with. If you get the chance, go see them. They will blow you away.
