Awkysmoron Tickets

Awkysmoron is the project of Athena Matsil, a queer Latinx musical polymath who is native to Brooklyn, New York. Formed in 2015, Awkysmoron has taken more than one shape over nearly five years, moving from the city to Oberlin, Ohio, and back to the city again. Presently, Matsil’s band features Jane Lai on keys, D.j. O’Loane on guitar, Theo Chapman on drums, and Griffin Jennings/Sam Zagnit on bass. Matsil handles everything else: they sing with gorgeously rich tone and unparalleled range, can whistle better than anyone in New York DIY, play violin, and write guitar parts that are as wistful as they are vibrant. This much is true about Awksy: the songs are written in earnest about the stuff of life. Matsil writes about the things she encounters in everyday life and the heartbreak that comes with being alive. They write about people being terrible on the subway, former lovers hurting them a thousand times over, and all of the beauty found in New York as observed by someone who knows the city better than the back of their hand.
