Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Live

Since its birth in the late 1930s, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has earned its place as one of the most renowned orchestras in the nation. With over 150 live shows annually, each performance delivers depth and mastery brought forth by the ASO's renowned Maestros and award-winning guest artists. The 2022-2023 season marks the 78th for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and guests can expect a historic and exciting year for classical music in Atlanta. In 2022, the Symphony welcomed its fifth-ever Music Director, Nathalie Stutzmann. Described as "a consummate rock star on the podium" by ArtsATL, Maestro Stutzmann is expected to usher in a new era of musical culture for the ASO and Atlanta as a whole. Stutzmann began her first season featuring 13 living composers, including Hilary Purrington, Tyshawn Sorey and Joel Thompson. In her first season, Stutzmann is also leading eight programs featuring the classical masters, including Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," Brahms' "Third Symphony" and a two-week Bach celebration culminating in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." For fans of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's returning and pop culture series, you won't want to miss highlights like the hit program Star Wars and More: The Music of John Williams or performances of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy soundtrack with a unique HD video multimedia experience.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Concert

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was originally founded by Anne Grace O'Callaghan in 1939 as the In-and-About High School Atlanta Symphony. As Supervisor of Music for Atlanta high schools, O'Callaghan started the passion project by recruiting the best high school players across the region. By 1943, Chicago Conductor Henry Sopkin had joined the ranks to lead the young musicians. The talented group's performances quickly drew the interest of patrons and investors, and by 1945 the Atlanta Music Club had offered Sopkin an eight-month contract to develop the Atlanta Youth Symphony. Finally, in 1947, the Youth Symphony dropped the "Youth" moniker and played their first concert as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra -- the start of decades to come as a world-renowned institution of classical music. Since then, ASO has traveled nationwide and internationally, been hosted by U.S. Presidents and won 27 Grammy Awards as of 2022 in Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance, and Best Opera Performance categories.

    ASO is great as always!

by JoshWiggins on 10/31/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra gave another great performance and the execution was flawless. My wife and I love The Nightmare before Christmas, and this was a perfect way to spend an evening seeing a great movie and hearing great music at the same time.

    Amazing with an exception

by nmichelle on 10/31/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

The performance was amazing. But beware, people brought very young children who then talked and yelled throughout the performance.

The Nightmare Before Christmas played LIVE!

by Monsterchuck on 10/31/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

What a great concept. The movie is projected on a big screen over the orchestra while they play the entire soundtrack WITH THE MOVIE. The original voices of the characters and the sound effects are from the movie. The music is played live - and incredible. Some people in attendance dressed in costume. Great for all ages.

    LaLa Land

by Jane311 on 10/30/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

The performance by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was incredible as always. This was my first experience with their performance with a film. The sound during the musical portions was great, but it was almost impossible to hear and understand the conversations in the movie. I sat in the first row balcony and not sure if the dialog sound was better in the first floor hall seating.

    Fun except...

by MeganAtl on 10/30/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

My husband and I were SO excited to come see this performance! We love The Nightmare Before Christmas, and we missed it last year! The only downside to the night was the fact that we were surrounded by teenagers. A high school band bought out almost the entire top section which is where we were sitting. They were loud and rude. They were on their phones the majority of the show. They were the nightmare element to the evening. I realize that that was very specific to the show we went to, so I still give it 4 stars! I just wish there was some way we would have know ahead of time about the high school band. We would have gone a different night, or we would have tried to upgrade our seats.

    Great performance by the ASO

by Jimbo2017 on 10/30/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

We were amazed with how well the performance came off with the ASO syncing with the movie soundtrack! It really added to the whole experience. The various soloists were amazing, particularly the pianist and the trumpeter. We're both jazz fans and they we equal to some of the best artiists of the genre. Great job ASO!

    Too loud

by Silvershot3000 on 10/30/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

The orchestra was amazing and on point. My only complaint is that the movie (vocal tracks) were way too loud. I kept wanting to turn it down a little bit. It was hurting my ears and the i could see others around me cringe everytime a vocal track would come on. Amazing time but too loud.

What a unique experience to see and hear the orchestra...live...as it relates to the movie!!! It was awesome to see various instruments played as it gave an integral, emotional, and in-depth appeal to the movie..

    Disappointed

by MCMorrow on 10/29/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

We left at intermission. Symphony sounded fantastic but couldn't understand words actors were saying. The singing was too loud for music.

    Poor "concert" gimmick

by MikeRT on 10/29/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

I looked forward to the LA LA LAND "in concert" last week by the Atlanta Symphony. I'm a big fan of the music and assumed I would be attending a true "pops"-like concert of movie music. Instead the idea was to drop out the music track from the film and have the live orchestra play in its place while we watch a washed-out, smallish projection of the film above the musicians. It was shockingly ineffective. The speakers were not up to the vocal tracks of the film, which sounded shrill and tinny most of the time. And the orchestra, while technically doing the intended job very professionally, sounded like an inferior version of the music which originally blasted through the dynamic theatre speakers and subwoofers during the original theatrical presentations. Less drums, less oomph, less everything. I guess this was a way to sell some tickets for the symphony but a true concert would have much more satisfying. I left at intermission and I bet I wasn't the only one.

    Sound levels needed work

by nicknamenottakenbyothers on 10/28/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Very neat concept. Symphony playing score. Sound volumes were way off drowning out parts of movie. Symphony stellar as always. Hope next night better. Still very enjoyable!!!

ASO & LaLa Land were amazing!

by InLaLaLand on 10/28/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

I loved the event. So incredibly amazed at the talent of the ASO and being able to play seamlessly with the movie. One thing I would change is to lower the volume of the movie. I thought it was extremely loud.

The orchestra was over powered by the movie sound

by ThomasV on 10/28/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Sitting second row loger slightly right of center the audio from the sound track was very harsh and far to loud. In spite of the volume it was difficult to understand voices, especially female voices. The Symphony was most enjoyable while the credits were running at the end of the movie. I loved the concept of musical accompaniment of movies, but you must improve the movie sound.
