Atlanta Hawks History

The lineage of the Hawks dates to 1946, when, as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, they played in the NBA's forerunner, the National Basketball League. They moved to Milwaukee in 1951, shortening their name, and then to St. Louis in 1955. They made the NBA finals four times in a five-year stretch, defeating the Boston Celtics to capture the franchise's only title in 1958. In 13 seasons in St. Louis, the Hawks missed the playoffs only once.

After moving to Atlanta in 1968, the Hawks' postseason runs continued for five years, fueled by the likes of Pete Maravich, Lou Hudson and Walt Bellamy. In 1976, Ted Turner bought the team and installed Hubie Brown as coach, and by his second season, the team was again a playoff contender. The Dominique Wilkins era began in 1982, with "The Human Highlight Film" leading the team to four straight 50-win seasons beginning with the 1985–86 season.

The arrival of Dikembe Mutombo helped the Hawks continue to make postseason runs in the late 1990s, but the new millennium brought a difficult eight-year dry spell. That ended with the 2007–08 season, the first of 10 consecutive years in which they earned a playoff berth.

In 2018, the team drafted Trae Young. He led the team with 29.6 points and 9.3 assists per game in his second season. During the 2021–22 regular season, Young led all of the NBA in total points (2,155) and total assists (737). During the postseason, the Atlanta Hawks went on an incredible playoff run, led by Young, that saw them advance to the Eastern Conference Finals where they lost to eventual NBA Champions Milwaukee Bucks.

    Great

by N on 3/6/23State Farm Arena - Atlanta

Enjoyed the game, was great to see Hawks against Trail Blazers. Hawks fan and happy for their win but also happy to see Matisse Thybulle, Jeremy Grant and Damian Lillard from Trail Blazers , also happy to see Marvin Sapp, did not know he was performing during half time and after the game so was an extra that I enjoyed.

    Knicks Game

by Charlie on 2/18/23State Farm Arena - Atlanta

Hawks played terribly. Upper level handicap seats are too high up. Uber pickup was unorganized & we were not allowed to return to our drop off location at the Omni hotel.

Great seats, not great all inclusive experience

by Brian on 2/12/23State Farm Arena - Atlanta

Title pretty much sums it up. The seats were good but the all inclusive harrahs thing was mediocre. Lines super long for food and they were frequently running out of what they had. Saying it is for “foodies” also a big stretch considering the only good you could get somewhat readily were hot dogs and pizza. Next time will skip the all inclusive and just get good seats- not worth it.

    Limited Accessible seating

    by B on 2/12/23

My boyfriend purchased two floor tickets for Thursdays game (02/09/23). When we got there and asked someone what was the easiest way to access our seats, everyone was confused. We ended up having to TRADE our seats for some others that were higher, but same section, because they do not have any way for someone in a wheelchair to access the court. Very disappointing to say the least. & the fact that complete strangers got to sit court side on my boyfriend’s behalf did not sit well with me at all. No one offered any type of refund or anything at all for that matter.

Was very energized in the stands and there was no other way to describe the experience without using the word immaculate.

    Go Hawks!!!

by ryguy500 on 1/25/23State Farm Arena - Atlanta

Hawks games are the best! State Farm Arena is a great place for an NBA game. The renovations a few years ago made it a fun current environment while still in the heart of Atlanta. My son and I attend a few games a year and always have a blast.

Worst seats I've ever had at a sporting event

by MM on 1/23/23State Farm Arena - Atlanta

When the board behind you is so bright and hot that you have a headache and sweat the entire game, that's a terrible fan experience.

    Fun game, cramped seats

by JD on 1/1/23State Farm Arena - Atlanta

We were in Section 224 Row N which basically crammed your knees against the rail. Absolutely no room to move. The view was decent but definitely not worth $120 a ticket. The game was a lot of fun though...very interactive.
