BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never, began his quest for unique tones and electronic samples as a teenager while experimenting on his father’s vintage synthesizer (which he still uses extensively to this day). When he moved to New York for post-graduate studies in archival science, he soon found his voice in the city’s vibrant noise music scene. After recording under a number of aliases, he settled on Oneohtrix Point Never for his self-released 2007 album Betrayed in the Octagon. He earned rave reviews for the creative sampling on his 2011 album Replica, which made year-end lists by Pitchfork, Tiny Mixtapes, and The Boston Globe. He partnered with Warp Records for his 2013 album R Plus Seven and won over new fans the following year on tour with Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden. As more and more ticket buyers discover envelope-pushing records like 2015’s Garden of Delete, the demand to see his mind-expanding live sets continues to rise.

One of the best shows I've seen.

by Sleep Dealer on 4/30/24Brooklyn Paramount - Brooklyn

Sometimes I'm afraid to see my heroes because of how much I've built them up in my head but OPN was everything I hoped he'd be—haunting, otherworldly, and beautiful. This was a performance I'll never forget. Also the Brooklyn Paramount was a perfect venue for his sonic aesthetic.

A weird, unique, and personal audiovisual experience.

by Caleb on 4/29/24Brooklyn Paramount - Brooklyn

I have been to a lot of concerts across multiple genres, and ambient electronic/noise concerts are always hit-and-miss. Because people can't sing along, they chit chat throughout the concert, sending a low, audible wave across the venue that sits underneath the music being performed onstage. At this concert, that didn't happen, and I think that's because Daniel communicated tactfully with the crowd, filled the venue with his music, and complemented all of it with really interesting and compelling visuals, including a miniature stage and Daniel replica, outfitted with lights, an LED backdrop, and smoke machines. This was a really nice end to the night, especially considering the concert seemed to start really late (it was listed as 7pm on LiveNation) but the openers were much, much later. One of the openers is an SNL comic, Sarah Squirm, and was a surprisingly nice complement to the alternative music played throughout the rest of the night.

    Strobe-Fueled Fantasia

by hsu on 4/20/24Neptune Theatre - Seattle

As a full disclaimer - don't watch this concert experience if you have any photosensitivity or epilepsy, as this show fully utilizes strobe lights and flashing video footage to accentuate sensory overload. Given all of this, OPN creatively mines his back catalogue and the music from "Again"to provide an exultation of his past history, from as far back as Replica and Returnal (and perhaps a little further) whilst mixing them earnestly with choice cuts from his latest (at the time of writing). This - plus some fantastic camerawork on hand from his co-star - elevated the experience into something truly transcendental. Big shout-out to the fantastic energy and work done by Arushi Jain, whose performance was quite memorable alone in the way she handled her blend of traditional raga and electronics, in a way where they interlocked together to form an exciting new voice.
