About

Sammy J in Concert

Don't judge a book by its cover — with his stocky frame, buzz cut, and tattoos, Sammy Johnson (aka Sammy J) might project a tough guy image, but the moment he opens his mouth his true nature becomes apparent. When you hear the sweet, soulful voice delivering tender, downright fragile tunes full of love and joy, it's impossible not to be won over.

Johnson's alternately breezy and bouncy blend of reggae, pop, R&B, and soul creates a feel-good vibe that brings people together. When he hits the stage with a voice full of sunshine, his concerts can become a communal experience in the best sense, as he wraps the audience in his summery sound and gets them singing along, bouncing and swaying with his gently percolating grooves.

Whether the Australia-born, New Zealand-bred crooner is performing reggae-tinted tunes like "Give Me All" and "Sleepwalker" or a mellow R&B-flavored track like "Since I Met You," he always has his audience in the palm of his hand from start to finish.

Sammy J Background

The child of an Australian father and a Maori mother, crooner Sammy Johnson — born an Aussie and raised a Kiwi — laughingly refers to himself as a "Mozzie." But his sun-dappled sound suggests something like a down-under answer to Jack Johnson, with a beach-ready, good-time feel and a laid-back mixture of R&B, reggae, and pop influences.

Inspired as much by the likes of Lauryn Hill and India.Arie as he is by the reggae rhythms of Jamaica, he started making inroads with such singles as "Wishing on Your Love" and "Fall in Love" in 2012. It was the following year that he had his breakthrough hit with "Give Me All," teaming up with Fiji.

"Don't Say Goodbye," featuring Tree Vaifale, from his 2013 album 'Prelude,' became a smash not only in New Zealand but in other parts of the world as well. With subsequent albums like 'Lion Roar' and 'Sleepwalker,' he expanded his audience further than ever, and he could be found in front of adoring fans in the U.S. as well as his home base.

Sammy J always never disappoint. Love his live music /concert. I had hoped that it was more than an 1 hour performance to be honest. Overall my experience was great! I’d love to see him perform more in San Francisco cause I would definitely go see him.

    Horrible

by Lisa on 5/9/23Harrah's Resort SoCal - Dive - Funner

The show was less then an hour by the time we got in it was over the artist claimed his drummer didn't get enough sleep the night before, it's no one's fault, he should have made people's money worth it. I even purchased a $35 T-shirt that was made with cheap fabric. If I could get a refund that would be great.

    Too short

by GC on 5/9/23Harrah's Resort SoCal - Dive - Funner

Good atmosphere but the concert was too short. The concert was 1 hour maybe an hour and 10 minutes. Long lines at the bar so we didn’t throughly enjoy the concert from the view where we were standing in line. Mixed drink options, deserve a zero. They didn’t even have the correct alcohol to mix with the juice they had. The mixed drink they gave me was unpalatable; and that was after the bartender tried making me another drink. I forced myself to drink it because the drink was $18. In essence, I most likely will not attend another concert at that venue.

    WILL ALWAYS RECOMMEND!!

by Ary on 5/9/23Harrah's Resort SoCal - Dive - Funner

This was my fifth time seeing Sammy J and for the fifth time it was amazing. His vocals are always top tier, and he gives you everything he's got! Its crazy how he can control his voice the way that he does! Can't forget that personality, its an added bonus. He'll keep you entertained between songs! All in all, SUPPORT SAMMY J!! He sounds even better live and thats saying a lot because the way he croons on the tracks is absolutely criminal! You will never be disappointed wether in your car jamming his songs or watching him live belting to the heavens! 10/10 would recommend!

    Loud and crowded

by CD84 on 11/7/22Ace of Spades - Sacramento

I love Sammy J. He has a great voice, and didn’t disappoint. But I couldn’t really hear his voice because everyone was screaming and packed together. I suppose that’s what I should expect from a concert, but next time, I’ll probably just save the 50$ and listen to Sammy J at home
