    Ye Old Bait and Switch

by bauhausfrau on 4/5/23Bowery Ballroom - New York

first off, I love this venue, but need to rethink the shows I go to now. This one was interesting, but for the first time in my life I had trouble getting AWAY from the stage and leaving. Trying to exit was horrible as I had to wade through an inpenetrable Wall of Beardos - thanks, guys. Way to be gents. This show was slated as Robyn Hitchcock. I don't recall any mention of his cutesy sidekick being present. After having to endure this ratatatat chat at a show at City Winery years ago, I was thrilled to see JUST ROBYN. But I was led astray - it was not JUST ROBYN. The billing had no mention of whatserface, and honestly, it's not my jam. I prefer gutsy belting it out ROBYN - not softened, vaseline on the lens making everything sweet like a non-dairy protein shake Robyn. no. no thank you. So, basically, Never again, cuz WHO CAN I TRUST????

    my 36th Robyn Hitchcock show

by Chris Huff on 4/4/23Bowery Ballroom - New York

Hitchcock is always a good time, even when he's super dismal (maybe especially when he's super dismal!). He and Emma Swift sang beautifully and the last minute replacement emergency rhythm section acquitted themselves well. Everyone should listen to all of Robyn Hitchcock's 30+ albums and then listen to them again - and buy direct from the artist the ones he has available.

Really enjoyable performance but room oversold

by Blackcat NYC on 4/4/23Bowery Ballroom - New York

Hey, I thought the Robyn Hitchcock show was a real treat. I am a fan of 43 years' standing and have seen him about 75 times. It's rare he plays a full band show these days. I enjoyed both the acoustic and electric sets. The sound in the room was wonderful, particularly during the electric set. The Bowery Ballroom is a neat space but was packed out; and although I got there an hour before the show started I was stuck towards the back and people there talk - talk a lot - through shows no matter who they paid good money to see. Bowery Ballroom is the worst venue in the city for this, I don't know why that is. So the acoustic show was interrupted by yelps, shouts and full conversations from "fans" where I was located. Not so much during electric set. So - glad I went overall but shame about some of the audience.

Robyn, Emma, and the whole band were great

by rsnyderpsu on 4/4/23Bowery Ballroom - New York

When a performer tells the sound board to drop in the mix they played with during sound check, and then precedes to “play the hall” with soaring sonic majesty, you know you are hearing a consummate artist. Robyn Hitchcock simply and complexly rocks. His guitar work is epic. And banter with Emma (“can you drop a little Emma in my Frampton’s”) bring the audience into a kind of intimacy one rarely sees these days. From a solo tune by “Uncle Bob” (Dylan) with harmonica and ringing acoustic guitar to the standards Madonna of the Wasps and One Long Pair of Eyes to the most recent Shufflemannia, Robyn and company simple bring it all first class. The Bowery Ballroom was perfect and packed and hopping. Cannot complement the emergency replacement rhythm section nearly enough. They were tight in the own right, and fit in like longtime members of the band. And an Aquarius Basest was reportedly a first for Mr Hitchcock—Scorpios 🙄😂!

    Thanks Robyn

by tomcat on 3/20/23Neptune Theatre - Seattle

I so appreciate that Robyn makes the effort to tour and delivers (at a bargain ticket price, as well). To start and stand solo, pick and sing to a supportive but anxious Seattle crowd takes balls and bravery. I admit I was relieved when Robyn’s partner, Emma Swift came out to support during the acoustic set—and their harmonies proved to be one of the highlights of the show for me. Keep doing that! “Authentic” has unfortunately become an overused description these days, but there is only one Robyn Hitchcock. Make the effort to see him and enjoy.

    Sadly mediocre.

    by Mz58 on 10/11/18Neptune Theatre - Seattle

Not the set of songs I would have picked, nor the VOLUME! Warmup band was amatureish, poorly composed & executed contemporary not complementary style.

    Robyn HItchcock ~ Sublime

by FilthyBird on 11/22/17Carnegie Lecture Hall of Oakland - Pittsburgh

Sublime experience as Robyn poured out painted visions through his lyrical genius. Sound was superb at the intimate venue of Carnegie Lecture Hall. Added bonus, could take a peek at the Natural History museum and sit on a whale bone to contemplate between sets. Took the time to meet with us after the show, absolute gentleman. Still vibrating...

    Classic

by powersofi on 10/2/17The Fillmore - San Francisco

Special one-off lineup of Robyn Hitchcock backed by Yo La Tengo. No opener, two sets and an encore. Tons of interesting rarities and covers. If you are a deep fan of either artist and they do a show in this format again, do not miss out.
