Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

    Disrespected by "artist"

by Music Lover on 7/26/22The Cabot - Beverly

TR did some good songs but ruined the evening with childish political rants.

    Worst concert ever

    by Unhappy camper on 7/24/22

I attended the Todd Rundgren concert Sat night at the Cabot theater in Beverly and it was the worst concert in my life! Todd used the stage as his platform to vent about his dislikes about a political party rant about politics instead of playing music. People were getting upset and yelling at him to shut up and play music. We didn’t come to a concert to hear him rant about politics. He only played one of his original songs. We walked out of the concert half way through and so did a lot of other people wanting their money back.

    Childish ranting

    by S. M. on 7/24/22

Name-calling partisan politics marred a good band. Rundgren "mocking fans who couldn't get their money back. Such a prima donna: "we don't take requests," "X party is ugly and stupid," "white people are a problem." Rundgren sounded like a petulant child. Thumbs down 👎

    Excellent show! Todd is awesome

by Gigi on 7/19/22Aura - Portland

Great show at Aura in Portland, Maine. We bought standing room seats and we were right behind the sound guys. Great place to watch a show. Todd is a showman! Lots of energy, very charismatic, lots of interaction with the audience. Great set list. Some tunes I never expected to hear. Missed a few old favorites but that is to be expected. His voice is still great and his range is amazing. I agreed with his political opinions and am grateful we still have freedom of speech! Catch his show if comes to your area! You won’t regret it.

Never a dull night with Todd

by Mort on 7/19/22Aura - Portland

Evry thing that I wanted and more. Todd has a way of making you feel good deep down inside. Being in my late 60s I have seen Todd many times and never has it been the same. If you ever have a chance to see him, do it while you still can. Aura in Portland is one of the best venues that we have been to seeing Tod there 3 times and sitting in the same comfortable seats and unobstructed view.

    Unpredictably Disapointed

by Bob on 7/19/22Aura - Portland

Great music, but we do not need to be lectured to by Todd's political opinion. He actually said at one point" if you are a Republican you should just go home, put a gun to your head and get it over with"

Fun Start for the Unpredictable Tour - Summerfest, Milwaukee

    by Ithastobe on 7/12/22

Summerfest never disappoints. Cool outdoor music festival right on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee. Todd and his band were headliners at the Uline Stage on Throwback Thursday - which meant peeps could get in for $5.00, and all drinks were 1/2 price until 6:00. Got to see The Fixx and Mindi Abair on the same stage before TR took the stage at 9:30. They opened up the SRO 'pit' area so I was able to be in the first row for next to nothing. Todd back with his band (Gil Assayas - keyboard, Kasim Sulton - Bass, Prairie Prince - Drums, and Jesse Gress. - Guitar. It was great seeing Jesse back onstage after a successful lung transplant. I find the Unpredictable shows fun because it includes is a mix of TR songs and oddball covers that he seems to enjoy playing. For the covers section he is seated, chilling with a Martini and conversive. It's always good to hear what is on his mind. For first night, the band was great and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Todd's voice was awesome. Great day seeing Todd and the band.

    Disappointed

Left the show early and we were not the only ones there was a steady stream of people leaving.

    Todd Shines

by Ruttman on 7/9/22Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

Great show, as usual. Todd mixes awesome talent with Amusing insights, and holds most of the the audience spellbound (even the older, staid, Des Moines crowd). Unfortunately the acoustics left much to be desired, and downgraded the experience from a 5 to a 4.

by A. L. on 7/9/22Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

Entertaining throughout the whole concert. Everyone was enjoying themselves and the energy in the air was radiant. I would highly suggest to check him out, a legend & his back up band at a venue near you.

    Entertaining!!!

by BJB on 7/9/22Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

I've always been a fan, but this show was a departure in a very good way. Thoroughly enjoyed the mix of "covers" and Todd's wit and wisdom flowed with the show. I have seen Todd for over 3 decades and have always been impressed with the undeniable "I'll do it MY way" attitude.

Would have liked to have heard more of his early songs

by prose on 7/9/22Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

Why do musicians think the audience wants to hear more new/unfamiliar songs than old? They came to hear the ones they know and to sing along. I realize that musicians must get awfully tired of playing the same songs over and over, but that's what the audience pays them for. Sitting through a new song that doesn't really appeal to you is boring. I love Todd Rundgren; always have, always will. However, I was disappointed that he didn't sing more of the songs from his early years. But the early ones he sang--oh, the memories that came flooding back...

Todd mailed it in. Cashed a check.

by Mailman on 7/9/22Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

Vocals were terrible. The sound guy running the microphone needs to be replaced. Todd sang silly songs and made fun of the people who wanted to hear the songs they came for. Very disrespectful to his fans. He also is one of those musicians who thinks his fans care about his politics. We came to hear the hits, Todd. You breached the contract. Never again.
