Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

Song Selection May Not Be What You Expect

by Crying In The Front Row on 4/24/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

Very disappointed in the concert. I saw Todd two years ago in Ann Arbor with Daryll Hall, and he was great. He played all his hits, and the crowd was really appreciative. But Sunday, April 21 in Detroit, it was a different story. His main set was 1 hour 45 minutes long, and I did not know one song! He came back out for an encore and sang an obligatory and ABBREVIATED medley of Hello its Me/Can We Still Be Friends/I saw the Light. The crowd erupted. He then sang another song from whatever, then finished with a full version of A Dream Lives on for Ever. If this was going to be Obscure Night, I wish someone would have told me, I wouldn’t have bought front row center tickets. If you are a true fan of his less popular stuff, by all means knock yourself out and go. His voice sounded great BTW, and he’ll be 76 in June. Band was tight too. But the song selection will have me wondering if we can, in fact, still be friends.

    Wizard Wows in Beautiful Venue

by Wazz on 4/24/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

First, the Todd Rundgren concert was not for those who wanted to hear his hits. But, is that really a bad thing - with all of the great music he's created in his career? I loved the show - because he and his band brought to life songs (solo and Utopia) that either I forgot, ignored or simply took for granted. The band was exceptional. Kasim Sulton, in particular, is a joy to hear alongside Todd. Their harmonies, with the A Capella songs in particular, brought back memories of when I first heard the songs at the Cleveland Front Row theater over 30 years ago. One minor thing - my wife and I were sitting three rows away from the stage for the show. The sound was, in my opinion, OK. However, when we went to get refreshments midway into the show, the sound actually sounded BETTER the farther away we walked away from the stage. Therefore, in the future, I may actually purchase tickets not in the pit for future artists I see. Again, this is not a big deal - but just something I needed to point out. However, the theatre is great and the experience overall was exceptional. Great job!

    Disappointed

by BonBon on 4/24/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

When an artist has been around for a while, like Todd, they should know the audience wants to hear all the hits. He played for a long time - which would have been great if he played more than five minutes of hits. I felt it was incredibly selfish of him. One of the most disappointing concerts I have ever been to. Half of the time hits and half of the time the other stuff would have been fine.

    Not good.

by Korn on 4/24/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

He hardly played any of his older popular songs. If I had read the playlist prior to purchasing tickets, I would have not gone. His voice is not what it used to be.

    Great! Deep Tracks

by DBlair2230 on 4/24/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

A lot of people were saying after the show that they did not like the show, but I loved it. Todd did several songs from former albums that were not great hits but were beautiful songs. I especially liked that I got to hear him perform "Kindness"live. What a thrill. Still sounds great! I hope I get to see him perform again soon. Just remember, this is not the greatest hits tour. He is an artist.

    Always a star!

by THE BIG O on 4/22/24Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

As usual, Todd's presence is immense and the music is divine. His guitar playing soars when needed and falls softly on your ears when required. The group of musicians surrounding Todd are some of the best in the business which helped make the evening's show so enjoyable. He never fails to deliver a show that you remember forever and ever. Just a pure delight to watch and listen to as he performs stellarly. Also, a "shout out"to the Uptown Theater, which is quite a venue. Great sight lines, amazing acoustics, friendly staff, and easy access make it a place where you will experience a great show.

    Todd Rundgren did not disappoint

by KDNen on 4/20/24Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Todd Rundgren on the opening night of the 2024 Me/We Tour did not disappoint. He played with the same passion, energy, and creativity as when I saw him on the 1977 RA Tour with Utopia. The 2 hour and ten minute show kept everyone wondering what entertainment surprises were happening next the entire evening. His shows are always a transformative experience. He still has it.

    Disappointing and disconnected

by TheinBomb on 4/20/24Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

We left the show after 75 minutes of sitting on our hands. He premiered a new set that includes zero of his hits. Visually, the show was well done. Rundgren could still sing - just not the high notes. The fact that he wouldn’t even blend in even half of his hits shows that he doesn’t care about his fans any more.

    Too much new music

by CoachPAC on 4/20/24Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

2 hours of all new music— with one 3- sing medley of old music— left me feeling very much disappointed. I love Todd.. but the 2019 tour, which was primarily all songs from 1980 and earlier, is my high point. The concert with DarylHall was “okay”-/ but too much Daryl, not enough Todd. This one was too much new stuff and nowhere NEAR enough classic Todd. Venue was very nice, but the playlist was very much a disappointment

    Todd Rungren

by Deby on 4/20/24Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

The roads in uptown are terrible! All closed in front of theatre a lot if the stores are closed as well. Daisys opened at 5. Good place to go! Tickets said 7 but that was when doors opened People were just talking around the bar area in the upper deck. Very annoying during the concert! Not the best Todd concert we had been to But we did have a fun time anyway!

Nonstop energy, passion & outstanding music!

by EeeBee on 4/20/24Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Awesome, soulful vocals, and a setlist that didn’t cater to the “oldies” crowd. Great band.

Wish he would have started with the encore!

by Smo on 4/20/24Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

I'll be honest, I only knew Todd's music from a few songs like "Hello It's Me", "We gotta Get You a Woman"and "Can We Still Be Friends". He is more bluesy than I was expecting, but the music was enjoyable. I was bummed I had to wait until the encore to hear my favorite songs, which were strung together and seemed to end in a blink of an eye. The man has energy, started exactly on time and has a great voice!

    Best Ever!

by Radawn on 4/20/24Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

We totally LOVED this show. The music, the venue, the light show- totally everything was top notch. We couldn’t have been happier. Todd Rundgren is a masterful musician, still at the top of his craft. Definitely catch this tour when they come to a city near you!

    Wonderful!!!!

    by ChrisMari on 11/11/23

We saw Todd 11/9/23 at the Venetian Theater in LV. Theater was great. But the best was Todd! I've loved his songs since elementary school and could sign most of them. I kept telling my husband he sounded a lot like Bowie, and now find out he was performing some of his songs. We would go see Todd again in a heartbeat! Strong voice - great on-stage personality. Daryl UGGHHH - weak voice and did not enjoy. We left early as Daryl was that bad and now have read the two did an encore together at the end. Wish we'd have stayed to see Todd more.
