Les Grands Ballets' Beautiful Nutcracker 2022 was magical!

by SuKG on 12/7/22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Les Grands Ballets has always been my favourite of all the Nutcracker interpretations and this year's performance did not disappoint. It was the best I've seen in all my many years I have been going. The costumes, the lighting and the sets pulled me into the visual dreamlike stage setting and story. The choreography and the dancers were wonderful as was Tchaikovsky's music presented by the orchestra.. Thank you to the parents who brought young children all dressed up in their best finery who were noticeably excited and in awe. They added to the night. And thank you Les Grands Ballets and the NAC for bringing this wonderful and festive evening to us in Ottawa. We surely needed it.

A spectacular performance for the entire family!

by JaneM on 12/5/22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet that can be enjoyed by the entire family. The first Act is less of a dance and more of a play, appropriate for the younger audience. The decorations are well-made, letting the audience emerge into the story, and the dancers of all ages will keep you well entertained with their performances. The second Act is a more traditional ballet, with such fantastic pieces as Chinese Dance, Trepak, Waltz of the Snowflakes, and, of course, Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy, performed by amazing Anya Nesvitaylo. Sperate kudos must be given to the NAC Orchestra. Under the lead of Conductor Airat Ichmouratov, they played possibly the best performance of the Tchaikovsky’s music that I had the pleasure to experience. That along was worth every single dollar spent on the tickets. Overall, I would strongly recommend this classic to those already familiar with the ballet, as well as to those who get to see it for the first time. Give yourselves a treat this Holliday season, you won’t regret it!

I loved that the production was focused particularly on the children, a perfect Christmas experience.

    Give us programmes

by Anonymous on 5/17/22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The ballet was beautiful. However I really wish that you would start giving out paper programmes again. I want to be able to look at the programme before the performance and at intermission. I do not like trying to scan a bar code, often doesn't work, and I want to see photos of dancers etc. I would be willing to pay for the programme.

    Lovely Evening

by Elsie on 5/16/22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was so lovely to attend a live performance again! The costumes and the backdrop created a magical, sumptuous setting. The children in the production added to the fun and were adorable. Some of the dance was a little shaky, but overall it was an enchanting evening.
