    Horrible

by Anonymous on 4/11/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The hipsters version of the crucible was terrible. The set was terrible, the costumes were terrible and the acting itself was overdone and terrible.

    The Crucible Cries at Midnight

by Mcmandigigs108 on 4/10/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

To tell you the truth my main reason for seeing the Crucible was because of Saoirse Ronan. She is one of my most respected actresses! I did like reading The Crucible and was shocked at how amazing it was on stage. The raw emotion shown by the cast surprised me in the best way possible!!!!

    The Crucible is recommended

by Espanol2 on 4/9/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The Crucible has a fine cast of actors and the performance did have an impact on the audience. I think dressing in authentic period dress would have given the play a notable edge in presenting a realistic view of the period being portrayed.

    THE CRUCIBLE was brilliantly acted...

by kenagent on 4/9/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

...by all concerned;* the all-purpose "schoolroom" set worked well, and the lighting effects were wonderful. The only drawbacks were music by Philip Glass at his most irritating--which brings me to director Ivo van Hove, whose A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE I also saw recently. He seems to overconceptualize the plays in such a way as to "dehumanize" the characters and their situations/conflicts. Perhaps Miller's work lends itself to this, so I was relieved to find genuine emotion coming into play this time.

    The Crucible was gripping!!!!

by loveshistory on 4/9/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Arthur Miller's play , "The Crucible" , is as relevant today as when it first opened in the early 1950's. The performances were exemplary; Ben Whishaw's portrayal of John Proctor was riveting; he captured the character's tormented soul and Saoirse Ronan's Abigail was as scathing and powerful. A must see!

    A "must-see" production!

by BackusB on 4/9/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The plot of "The Crucible" mirrors true events when mass hysteria or over-zealous ideals and opinions take over reasoning. The cast was perfect in every regard. So it's difficult to point out just one or two, except for me to say that Sophie Okonedo was amazing in her role as Elizabeth Proctor. As a side comment, I'd like to say how pleased I was to see the mezzanine and balcony filled with high school students. In the past I've bemoaned the fact that the younger generation is seldom seen at dramas. I am sure they gained a wider understanding of Arthur Miller's intent when writing this classic play.

Another great Miller stage adaptation from Ivo Van Hove. Watch the great vulnerable moments from Ben and Sophie as the Proctors. Whishaw was the greatest surprise and brings in a different approach. Great acting and great staging, though if you happen to watch Hove's previous "View from the Bridge" revival, you'll miss the minimalistic and bared down approach to Miller's plays.

Stellar cast, imaginative staging for our times

by Encke on 4/8/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The almost perfect casting of talented, giving performers, orchestrated by a clever director, designer, and production team, is easily the most spot-on telling of The Crucible for our era of opportunistic demagoguery.

Ponderous ...actors felt like they were working ..

by Naim1310 on 4/6/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Long pontificating script ...not thrilling as promised ...not believable "witchcraft "...the young pac of school girls were looking like they belonged in a junior highschool play ... Traveled from West Chester Pa with high anticipation only to be sitting there and saying when will this be over with ...the long goodbye between the two main characters was exactly that ..TOO LONG..the actors were working to ACT ... When Ben took off his shirt he took it off to the side rather than center stage ...that's an opportunity missed to include the audience in his anguish ... On the plus side ...the bloody makeup was perfect ... The pump coffee machine was ridiculous ...shows lack of respect for the play and the audience .

The Crucible is a stunning evening of theatre

by Notjustaname on 4/6/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I was ready for a good production of this well-known play, but was blown away. Ivo Van Hove has mounted a frightening, timely show that left me with a knot in my stomach throughout the unfolding of the events onstage. Stellar performances dot the production, led first and foremost by Ben Wishaw and Sophie Okonedo as John and Elizabeth Proctor, whose emotional final scenes bring the tragedy of what occurs in the town to crystalline focus. Also praiseworthy is Saiorse Ronan in her first Broadway turn - her "Mean Girl/Woman Scorned to the 10th degree" scared the wits out of me. Happily surprised by Tavi Gevinson - who was affecting as a girl caught in the middle and trying to figure out what to do.

    modern vs traditional

by CitygirlAtHeart on 4/6/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

this is a very different take on a classic and i will say that i wasn't in love with the direction. the acting was excellent, the costuming was modern along with the direction and i, personally, would have preferred a more traditional route in telling this strong story. fans of saoirse ronan certainly filled the audience after her starring in the movie "brooklyn", but i think this was a casting to draw in that crowd and i, too, was a fan of her performance in that movie but not so much in this show. sophie okonedo was superb in the role of elizabeth proctor along with tavi gevinson who plays mary warren. overall, i am glad i saw it but would not urge others to see it.

    Remarkable production of The Crucible

by timefortheater on 4/6/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I went to see The Crucible because I had recently seen View From the Bridge by the same Director and it was haunting and very effective. I wasn't disappointed by this remarkable production of The Crucible (set in indefinite modern dress with minimalist staging). The acting was superb. The harrowing story--of government induced hysteria among young girls dooms people to brutality and death with people in Salem turning against each other, naming names of others who should be accused. I do have questions about why they did this revival now and what the overall message is about these times. It was not so clear to me. And the ending in a cataclysm of violence clearly indicated the disaster of this kind of fear, but I wondered if it might have been even more powerful if the ending were less wrought.

    The Crucible -

by Benbuddy on 4/5/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I went to see The Crucible mainly to see Ben Whishaw and of course he was magnificent. I was expecting the play to be very heavy, but was pleasantly surprised by this production. The overall theme, of course is heavy, but there are lots of lighter moments and even some one-liner zingers that make you laugh out loud. The entire production, actors, setting, music & special effects - even the dog acting as a wolf made the evening very unforgettable and the three hours seemed to fly by. I liked it so much I'm going to see it again.

The Crucible is 1692 religious mass hysteria

by GustaveH on 4/5/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Actors and Actresses work well together in this cast. Miller's use of the King James English dialect and word structure was very interesting. It is completely mind boggling on innocent people losing their lives - but in this day and age 2016 - what else isn't new? Ciaran Hinds and Tavi Gevinson stand out IMHO in this production. If you can get a ticket, it will be worth your while. Recommended ...

    Crucible was powerful

by Joomsbuggy on 4/5/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Like the Vogue review that just came out, I came for Saiorse Ronan but was overcome by Sophie Okonedo and Ben Whishaw's performances as the beseiged and tormented Proctors. The main characters are trying to navigate their own marital struggles while also trying to retain their humanity and sanity in the face of mindless religious extremism. There were other theatergoers sniffling around me, so I knew I was not the only one with tears in my eyes as the performance kept building to its (what-feels-like) inevitable conclusion. Phillip Glass's score -- there are no words to describe how powerfully and perfectly it enhanced this new adaptation. Actually, it almost felt like the music was the heartbeat (literally and figuratively) that drove the performance along. Wow.
