Good concept never fully realized
by Cru111sader on 7/16/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New YorkI love the play, but I have problems with the unfulfilled promise of the "new" concept of 'private school girls.' It should have been a winner, but it fell far short. Aside from the ambiance of a 'private school.' All the action seemed to take place in one classroom. Perhaps REV. PARIS AND HIS WIFE should have been a headmaster and his wife living in private quarters of the private school. Perhaps Miller's townspeople should have been faculty. At least something more than the classroom with its poorly erased blackboard would have helped. The special effects were wonderful, and the acting was superb. But there was no chemistry between PROCTOR and HIS WIFE, and little animal magnetism between PROCTOR and ABIGAIL. The real essence of the play in the new setting should have dealt with modern pedophilia and scandal in church and education settings. The effects of the "birds" on the blackboard was fine, the crash through the window and the ruble left behind were very good. The "flying girl" effect seemed like real witchery and not the true non-witch lying of the girls who wanted to get back at people they felt had oppressed them. Most productions stress that the girls wanted stature, they accused, and "the accuser is always right." The director does not really understand the play or private schools. He did understand VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE It had promise, but the promise was unfulfilled
