    Good concept never fully realized

by Cru111sader on 7/16/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I love the play, but I have problems with the unfulfilled promise of the "new" concept of 'private school girls.' It should have been a winner, but it fell far short. Aside from the ambiance of a 'private school.' All the action seemed to take place in one classroom. Perhaps REV. PARIS AND HIS WIFE should have been a headmaster and his wife living in private quarters of the private school. Perhaps Miller's townspeople should have been faculty. At least something more than the classroom with its poorly erased blackboard would have helped. The special effects were wonderful, and the acting was superb. But there was no chemistry between PROCTOR and HIS WIFE, and little animal magnetism between PROCTOR and ABIGAIL. The real essence of the play in the new setting should have dealt with modern pedophilia and scandal in church and education settings. The effects of the "birds" on the blackboard was fine, the crash through the window and the ruble left behind were very good. The "flying girl" effect seemed like real witchery and not the true non-witch lying of the girls who wanted to get back at people they felt had oppressed them. Most productions stress that the girls wanted stature, they accused, and "the accuser is always right." The director does not really understand the play or private schools. He did understand VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE It had promise, but the promise was unfulfilled

    excellent cast

the acting was magnificent. The play itself is pretty heavy duty as are most of Arthur Miller's works.

    Theater at its best

by Minding on 7/15/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This production, its conception and execution (excuse the double entendre), was out of this world. The acting by the whole ensemble and especially the three leading characters -- both Proctors and the Judge -- was outstanding. It builds and then hits you in the gut. We had to take time afterwards to recover. It is a play written in response to the red-baiting anti-communism of the 50s, and it speaks to the madness people are still capable of and the justifications given to themselves as well as others for the cruelty and suffering inflicted on others.

    Disappointing

by bellecelle on 7/15/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Except for some exciting performances by Ronan and Norton, a drab production. This story should be terrifying, emotionally charged, and should leave the audience shocked, not bored. The " original" score by Glass , with it's incessant lack of direction, and lack of emotional content does nothing to aid the plays constantly changing mood and speed.

    The Crucible was eerily relevant

by janedack on 7/10/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This was an amazing staging of the classic. Right now, in our culture, a must see especially for teens. Gorgeous set and directing and flawless acting. Nobody in the cast did not shine.

Don't waste your time or money!

by Wildrap18 on 7/10/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This version of The Crucible was done by a pretentious director (for lack of a better word), who felt that Arthur Miller's classic play had to be moved to a modern classroom in order for it to relate to a modern audience. That in itself is absurd. He then has one of the characters actually floating in the air, which undermines the entire meaning of the show. Most of the acting was below Broadway standard. Instead of wasting your money on this atrocious version of a classic play, just rent the DVD starring Daniel Day Lewis and you will see a Crucible worth remembering!

    The Crucible

by DrTootz on 7/9/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The acting was wonderful; the actors were captivating. I was also impressed with how the play was designed with contemporary costuming to juxtapose the Salem Witchcraft era with Arthur Miller's statement against the McCarthy era. Well done!

    A thankless Play

by JuliaR9 on 7/9/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I have read this play and seen the movie with winnona ryder, and I am not the biggest fan of this play- but I like Saoirse Ronan so I decided to go see the show. Though the acting is good, the play is dark and thankless without any redeeming qualities. I would recommend making sure what you are getting into before seeing the show since the content is so dark. I would not recommend the show to any young children. My sister enjoyed the show and commented that sometimes in life there is no redemption, and this play reflected that. Though the acting was impressive, it did not wow me enough to make me recommend this show. But if you want to see something bleak, this is the show for you.

    Amazing performers!

by Skw101 on 7/9/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The acting was superb. Set was unique and fit well with update to the story. The Crucible is just a very long, outdated, peice of work in my opinion. But worth a see if you like watching incredible actors.

    A don't miss event

by exhibicon on 7/9/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The Crucible was one of Arthur Miller's finest works. His descriptions of the Salem Witch trials and their resemblance to the Joe McCarthy hearings ("witch" trials as well) in the late 1950's was remarkable. Quite frightening when one considers that it was our Congress that allowed them to proceed.

    Great production of a classic

by Berengaria on 7/8/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This was a terrific production. The cast was uniformly excellent. Special mention should be made of Ciaran Hinds, whose Deputy Governor Danforth is a fairly uni-dimensional character. Hinds found a way to play him so that his positions appear reasonable, even as the audience knows that--in the context of hysteria and vengeance running amok--they are not only unreasonable but wholly unjust. Tavi Gevinson was also terrific as Mary Warren, the adolescent girl who knows better but can't stand up to the pressure of the accusers.

    The Crucible

by CarrieC1 on 7/5/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The acting in this play is unbelievable! Ben Whishaw is the new Laurence Olivier and completely inhabits his characters -- I have seen him In London theatre, also, and he is just so amazing. The rest of the cast similarly outstanding -- I am a new fan of Tavi Gevinson and you cannot say enough about Bill Camp and the experienced British and Irish stage actors. This is the third time I have seen The Crucible, don't miss it!

    Stunning Production of THE CRUCIBLE

by Aquinnahgirl on 7/5/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I was privileged to see the stunning production of THE CRUCIBLE on Broadway. A play I've seen a hundred times in high school productions was stripped bare and revealed as a fiercely sexual, bone-chilling story about the power of fear and paranoia to unravel a man, a marriage, and a community. Every cast member brilliant and equally balanced (a tribute to the director's vision): Ben Wishaw; Sophie Okonedo; Ciaran Hinds; Saiorse Ronan. Ben Wishaw was the best John Proctor I've ever seen. It was counter-intuitive casting in that Proctor is usually played as a towering, imposing figure (think Liam Neeson or Daniel Day-Lewis) By casting a vulnerable, flawed man -- the soul of sanity in an insane world -- a man desperate for redemption from his own sin, it makes his downfall even more painful to watch, and very easy to identify with. The emotional savagery pierced me to the core and I haven't been able to shake the memories...It closes July 17th; see it if you can.

    Powerful but not completely satisfying

by MAllenW on 7/5/16Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

It's another great Arthur Miller play, and relevant to the current state of our politics. However, the staging and concept were only partially successful, and with such a powerful play and good acting, I was hoping for more. Some images were not clear. Some ideas were not fully flushed out. Warning: It is long (almost 3 hours) and there are no body mics, so people sitting nearby were having trouble hearing actors who don't speak up. (Like the old days before microphones). Also, there are no hearing aids.
